CREATE A PEPPER AT CHILI'S TO FIGHT CHILDHOOD CANCER!!!!

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Chili’s Grill & Bar® announced the kick-off of their fifth annual Create-A-Pepper to Fight Childhood Cancer campaign. Now through September 30, Chili’s restaurants around the country and, for the first time, in Puerto Rico, are marking National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by inviting people to get creative and raise funds to help St. Jude find cures and save children with cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases.
Guests at participating Chili’s restaurants can contribute to St. Jude in multiple ways:

- Make a donation to St. Jude and receive a Create-A-Pepper chili pepper coloring sheet designed for display at restaurants during the month.

- Purchase Create-A-Pepper T-shirts that can be customized with permanent marker.

- Buy a customized Create-A-Pepper key that can be cut for use at home or the office.

- Eat at Chili’s on Monday, Sept. 29, when Chili’s will donate 100 percent of profits from participating restaurant sales to St. Jude.

I am communicating from North Carolina, USA, and I am formerly from New York. Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma is a diagnosis I understand. That 1983 diagnosis when I was a teenager in high school was one which did not have any clear-cut statistics. The numbers just weren't there and readily available to draw from like they are today. The diagnosis then was compared and paralleled to the Ewing Sarcoma, the cousin tumor which affected the bones. I understand what you are each experiencing on all different levels of anxieties. Timing is everything knowing when to laugh, be serious, vent, take a "time out" or just chill and sort through everything and take it all in.

My diagnosis was just a few months shy of my high school 1983 graduation. Yup...41 years old now. :) I was diagnosed on the 14th floor of Sloan-Kettering [bone floor], but after the diagnosis I was admitted when necessary on the 5th floor [Pediatrics] since Rhabdomyosarcoma was considered a pediatric diagnosis. All of my chemotherapy treatments were on the 5th floor Pediatric Day Hospital. My treatments began in April 1983 and were completed January 1984 with the "big" treatment taking place every 3 weeks with smaller intravenous chemotherapy injections in between. My chemotherapy consisted of Cytoxan, Adriamyacin, Vincristine and low dose Methotrexate. I believe some of those chemotherapy drugs have been updated and renamed. My tumor was below my left knee on the outside of the leg. I had surgery just shy of halfway through chemotherapy. It was scheduled for just over an hour and it turned into over 4 hours. The tumor had engulfed more than the xrays and scans revealed. The tumor was removed with the fibula [small bone from knee to ankle] and the muscle "cartridge" the tumor had wrapped around. Unexpectedly, the tumor had also wrapped around 2 of the 3 leg arteries so they were removed along with some of the muscle cartridges above and below the primary site. The primary muscular site the tumor had grown on was the muscle cartridge which enables a person to move the foot. After surgery all that remained was the larger lower leg bone, one artery [the smallest] and my foot which could no longer be moved. That unexpected extra 3 hours of surgery resulted in my hospital stay being a month long. The small remaining artery made the healing process slow and the 50+ plus leg staples from surgery didn't help the matter much either.

The big obstacle was getting back on my feet after the healing process and chemotherapy completed. Accepted to college for Fall of 1983, college agreed to defer my acceptance to the following Fall of 1984 due to my circumstances. Chemotherapy ended January 1984 and managed to get rid of the crutches one month later, but due to not walking for so long physcial therapy endured for most of the summer to get my foot/ankle to 90 degrees. Due to gravity it had "dropped" and I was walking on the ball of the foot, but was making compensation for it. The physical therapy did its job, but gravity can't be fought no matter what when there aren't any muscles left in a human leg to keep the foor mobile. Over time the foot dropped again, but that didnt stop [finally] going off to college with no restrictions. Making compensations for my walking I returned to swimming, volleyball and tennis and was doing anything I wanted until....

...Spring Break sophomore year when I came home to Sloan-Kettering for a check up. To my surprise [visible to the naked eye] there were stress fractures from the ankle fractured all the way up to my knee. The decisions were all surgery which meant pulling out of college with at least a year to recover. The main goal was to get my ankle fused at 90 degrees, but amputation loomed during surgery, or during recovery, or after discharge, or at some point because no one could guarantee if that smallest remaining artery could withstand and recover from surgery. Its collapse was unknown and definite issues would arise with circulation as I would reach my senior years. To avoid an impending second surgery [and chronic problems] I elected to amputate below the knee, walked out of the hospital 5 days later with my new temporary leg, and haven't looked back since. I had had enough and it was time to move on. I graduated college in 1988 and left New York in 1993 for the relaxed life style of the South. Having an attraction to NASCAR certainly helped. :)

That is my story in a nutshell with lots of other highs and lows left out. Your story is very uplifting!!! You've got a friend here for life and one who knows because I have walked down a similar path. Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars. God Bless you All and I hope to hear from each of you soon.

Hey Andrew! I just read your story and what a miracle! I also have a son, Paul who is a cancer survivor, embroynal rhabdomyosarcoma. His tumor was located in his nasal pharynx and base of his brain. Diagnosed in Dec. of 2000. Paul was 3 and had his first chemo treatment on his 4th birthday. He underwent chemo for a year and 26 radiation treatments. He had a scan in April of 2001 and it showed that the cancer was gone after only 4 months of treatment! Still had to continue with the protocol because they said it could come back. Scans since then have been negitive. Except for a scan in March of this year and it showed a tumor which looked to be benign. Paul ended up having to have brain surgery to remove this benign tumor deep in the right frontal lobe. It has been a month now and he is doing wonderfully!
Grateful for your story and all the cool things you have encountered through this. God gets the credit and we give Him all the glory for yours and Paul's healing!
Take a look at his website if you have the chance. caringbridge.org\visit\paulrader

Go for it Andrew! I have a good friend who lost an eye at the age of 14. He excelled at scoring from long distance in basketball, is an excellent golfer and is now Athletic Director at an Ohio high school having taken numerous teams to district, regional and state championships as a coach. His friends still call him "Rabbit" because of his keen eyesight and jumping abilities in his competetive youth.
I hope your dreams come true, as my friends' have!

Hip hop, hippety hop
My “Easter Bunny” went off to the shop,
He bought me an egg and lots of chocs
And packed them into a cardboard box.
Then he wrapped it with paper and shiny string
It really was such a pretty thing.
Disaster struck when I opened the door-
He slid across the parquet floor,
He went round the corner and past the stairs
And finished up in a pile of chairs.
Of the Easter goodies not a trace,
he’d thrown them into my fireplace!
So a warning before you go opening doors
Make sure your “Bunny” has non-slip paws!

Happy Easter

With lots of love,

A PRAYER FOR CHRISTMAS

God Give Us eyes this Christmas
To see the Christmas Star.
And give us ears to hear the song
of angels from afar

And, with our eyes and ears attuned
for a message from above,
Let "Christmas Angels" speak to us
of hope and faith and love

Hope to light our pathway
When the way ahead is dark,
Hope to sing through stormy days,
with the sweetness of the lark

Faith to trust in things unseen
and know beyond all seeing
That it is in our Fathers love
We live and have our being

And love to break down barriers
of color, race and creed,
Love to see and understand
and help all those in need.

Lord, bless those we love this Christmas Day,be they near or far away Bless those good friends who mean so much and those with whom we're out of touch. We bring them all to You in prayer, and ask You to keep them in Your care.

Please know that you are thought of, in a very special way, not just this beautiful season but every day.

I came across this website by accident. I just wanted to add my prayers for your son. We went through this with our oldest son in 1975. I hope it will encourage you that he is approaching his 33rd birthday in October. He has been married for 12 years and has two beautiful children. He lost is right eye at age 3 but went on to play varsity baseball and basketball in high school. He has a special and positive outlook on life that we know comes from what he experienced as a child. God is good all the time....take care.

Hi Andrew. Congratulations on your great news. You deserve to hear such good news because you're a real fighter. Carry on playing basketball and maybe one day I'll be able to say "I remember making a banner for Andrew Mizzoni before he was famous!"

Tell all of your friends who are fighters too that they can get a free banner too at THE BANNER SITE

You are one brave guy in at least two ways: first, to beat cancer, and second, to play goalie!! It takes a lot of courage and strength to do both.

I was checking out web pages on rhabdo for my middle daughter (age-10) for a school project. She chose rhabdo because her older sister had this type of cancer at age 41/2 (she is now 13). Her site was on her right parotid gland and went through surgery, chemo and radiation and is now fine (touch wood). All stories of children with cancer are inspirational and yours is no exception. I think it is great that you are playing hockey and wish you all the best in the future. Always stay positive!!

Go for Gold Andrew! As a mother of two goalies (Michael and Andrew) I know that being a goalie can seem like a solitary position even though you are part of a team. But always remember to count on the people around you, on and off of the ice, for support when you need it. Here's wishing you many, many shut-outs Andrew!

I have visited your web page numberous times over the past year Andrew and I am always amazed. First by the way nothing ever seems to slow you down and second by how many people and organizations you have been able to touch with your story.

I know from being around you that you tend to down play your own achievements. When someone comments on a great save or a big win you shrug it off. Some times it's OK to stick out your chest and be proud of yourself Andrew,,,,everyone else is.

I'll see you around the rink Andrew.

Your friend always,

I have also been fotunate to be given the opportunity to know Len Mizzoni (Andrew's father) not only on a professional but also a personal level and the strength and faith I find within him has been inspiring. Thank you for sharing this site with me and with other folks that are looking for a little serenity in their difficult lives.

Dear Andrew, I hope one day we will meet. My prays and best wishes are with you and your family this Holy Christmas season. My son to, at nine years old had rhabdo in the orbit of his eye. 18 months of chemo he had to endure. Postive thoughts and a will to be an engineer one day made him a stong willed survivor. My son is 25years old now. He just got married in july and they bought a new house. My son, by the way is a architectual engineer, and he made top of his class, putting him on the dean's list. So Andrew, follow your dreams. There is nothing that can not be accomplished when you have faith in God, your family and in yourself. May God bless you and your family this Christmas and I hope that the year new will bring you much joy and happines. Warmest wishes, N.

Hello Andrew:
My name is Terry Doran and I am a registered/certified Level III OMHA official. My family and I live in Stouffville and this is my official OMHA center that I take my ref assignments from. I have been involved in the game of hockey all my life. I have 4 other brothers, one older and 3 younger. Our family has felt the pain and have experienced first hand the results of cancer. You my young friend must never ever give up fighting. The game of hockey is similiar to our "game" of life. In hockey all teams come up against a better team. They may loose a game or 2 along the way against a better team. However this just makes you want to win even more the next time you play those guys. So what do you do differently? You practise and practise and practise until you get it right. You never ever give up. This is the really hard part Andrew....it hurts to practise BUT you will win and win BIG!
We pray for you and hope all is well at the end of every day. Keep the faith, keep your head up and keep the puck out of the net!! Good luck to you my friend. See you on the ice!
Best regards,
Terry Doran

Andrew,

I have spent the last 6 years coaching hockey and soccer with some elite athletes and a teacher for the last 10 years and I believe I have worked with a wide range and so many kids. Although, I have never met you, yet have heard so much about you and your champion attitude and spirit, I know I have not seen it all. Andrew, you have the soul and spirit of a champion that we may never experience. You are about life, desire, determination and hope. I am proud and honoured to know that we can walk with you(such greatness)and for that, we are humbled. You have been my daily mantra that helps my family and I keep life in perspective. You must know, that your life and your fight have reached so many, we can only hope and pray for you to continue and you will, we know! We are happy to hear that you're between the pipes again, playing the game you love so much. Good Luck! You are a Winner.
I guess I can only say "Thank you", hopefully on behalf of all of us who are on your side of the stands cheering you on. Stop that puck, Andrew. Stop that puck!

God bless you and your family.

Our family prayers are with you always.

Dear Andrew, as a hockey dad and former Coach and Manager in the Vaughan Hockey Program, I was always impressed and inspired by those individuals like yourself that always wanted to be part of the game because they just loved the sport.
I am fortunate to have my 2 boys playing today with teams that support and care for each other because that is the best part of team sports. Everybody dreams of their child being in the NHL, but ultimately it is those kids that give it their best game in and game out that succeed. You are giving it your best, you have succeeded more than you know.
You have the prayers and good wishes from this family, and you have the support of your team and from the minor hockey world to cheer you on.

Wishing you a successful recovery, from the Tersigni`s

I am a goalie mom of a 14-year old boy. I truly think goalies are a special breed and that they are mature beyond their years or experiences. Your son in particular is an example of that. I pray for your son's health and for those around him to support him.

Dear Andrew

From the Westmall Lightning Atom "A" team, we are very sorry to hear of your latest set back, but from reading your web page we are sure that you will continue to fight with everything you have as you have in the past. To quote some old cliché's "more can be accomplished when everyone pulls together as a team", and as a goalie you probably heard this before "stay focused and be positive". Although we can't be there with you we hope that maybe just you knowing that we are all pulling for you will help you in some way. Keep fighting and don't give up. We all hope to see you back on the ice, get well soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Hi Andrew, my name is Lynne and I am the mother of a CANCER SURVIVOR and also of his brother, a goalie just like you. My son, Jesse, is now 11 years old. He was born in April of 1991 and in September of that year he too was diagnosed with cancer. They found a tumour in his brain that was the size of a small grapefruit which was very large for a 5 month old baby. The first diagnosis was that his cancer was rhabdomyosarcoma, they considered this to be good news as they believed this cancer to be curable. Turned out he had PNET which stands for Primative Neuroectodermal Tumour. The prognosis was no longer so good. Jesse had two surgeries and 8 months of chemotherapy. The proper protocol was radiation therapy but because of his tender age, that was not an option. They only tried chemotherapy in hopes that it would at least prolong his life and hopefully something new would be discovered in the meantime. We were very hesitant as we wanted whatever time he had left to be pleasant, but as our favourite neurosurgeon, Dr. Rutka, so kindly reminded us, they see miracles all the time at Sick Kids so anything was worth a try. He was so right and we are truly grateful to him. Jesse valiantly battled against all odds, obsticles and set backs, as there were many. He had his last chemo on his 1st birthday and thankfully has never had to endure that again. In April this year, on his 11th birthday, we celebrated 10 years of remission. Although he had many complications over the years they were all related to his surgery and treatment, he never, ever had a relapse of cancer despite the doctors "expecting" he definitely would. Our visits to neurosurgery and oncology at Sick Kids are now yearly and they speak of Jesse's miracle story often and copies of his CT scans are used all over the world for medical training. The doctors now feel comfortable telling us there was no way they ever expected Jesse to survive. Jesse is a very, very active boy who loves more than anything to play and have fun and that gives us great joy as these are things we never thought he would experience. Jesse has fluid on his brain, poor hearing in his right ear and he cannot see well out of his right eye so he will probably never play hockey like you, certainly not contact. Those things are minor and certainly don't keep him down. He's gotten tremendous enjoyment out of being a "Rink Rat" running from game to game, and tournament after tournament, always exploring new arenas, new hotels and making lots of new friends. His brother, a goalie, is 14 and plays Bantam AA in Barrie and although they pretend to hate each other sometimes, I know his older brother knows how truly lucky he is to be healthy and that his brother is a survivor. He knows his younger brother's stubborness and determination are what have kept him here and are personality traits he will just have to put up with. With all the prayers, love and support you clearly have, Andrew, your miracle too, is in the making. May God bless you and your family as we know first hand the strength that you need to endure this disease. I didn't only write this letter in hopes of giving you and your family some support and inspiration, I wrote it for myself as well, because 10 years in remission and sometimes we almost need to be reminded how truly lucky and blessed we are. I try to remember that when we're at the rink as there's nothing that gives me more pleasure than watching my oldest son play in net, and my youngest son run around the arena laughing and playing without a care in the world. I pray that very soon you and your family will be comfortable enough to sit back and enjoy things knowing that your cancer is behind you. God Bless you Andrew and keep fighting!

Hi Andrew. I'm one of those "geezer" adults who referee's minor hockey. A year ago I too was diagnosed with cancer although mine was not as serious as yours (pituitary tumor). It was removed but I was off the ice for 12 weeks and it drove me nuts!! I expect you feel the same way.

Hockey gave me a way to relax and enjoy again. I wish the same joy for you on the ice for a very very long time.

Hi Andrew, hoping that the puck looks as large as ever when you take to the ice again. Such great news, keep the faith. I used to play hockey in the old THL for Cedar Hill Colts and Wexford. Since then I have been a Coach, Trainer, Linesman, Referee and yes spectator. My sincere wish would be to someday watch one of your games and shake your hand at the conclusion of the game. Your courage and strength have been transferred to many people you don't know. You have just given me strength, and I will pray for you always.

Awesome news! Elliott says Hi! We hope to visit again in the Summer and we won't bring extreme hot weather with us this time. Nate's football team lost in the first round of play offs, but we needed a miracle to win, our star ball carrier broke his arm 5 days before the game. Oh well there is always next year. You have bounced back from so much, I know you'll get well soon and be back on the ice.

Hey Andrew last sunday i was on the duufield team that you faced and i got a pently for slashing the goalie. I dont know if you were the goalie that day but i have a story to tell you and its about about my dad. My dad has cancer called leukemia and as of right now my dad is almost cured. My dad went through a really rough time to get to this point but now he feels great. I can only wish that you do as well as my dad so i can face you for another 100000000 years. I play you again November 1st. I will be wearing nuber 12 for duffield with the A on my sweater and as i pass by you I will be thinking about you and my dad and how a great future you will have. Thinking of you always.

Hi Andrew,

I coach the Caledon Hawks Peewee 'A' hockey team. I always knew that goalie's were a special breed. Their courage and dedication are second to none and you exemplify this to the max. Your situation has caused me to look at my players a little differently. I see them more as 12 year-old beautiful little boys rather than 12 year-old hockey players. Through your strength and courage I have become a better coach and better father. For this, I am extremely grateful. May your courage touch the lives of many others as it has mine. GO LEAFS! Hi Andrew and Family,
I am sitting here with tears in my eyes at the courage, strength and determination that your Dad has described. I know what you are all going through as my daughter, who will be 23 in November was diagnosed this past January, 2002 with a brain tumour. She is doing fine as the tumour is contained and does not seem to be growing. She has to have another MRI in October and we are praying that the tumour has shrunk or gone away. Prayer is very powerful and my faith in God has really strengthened over his past year. I will pray for you Andrew and for your family. You sound like a real trooper and with your family at your side everything will be okay.

I was sorry to hear that you felt so bad after the treatments earlier this month - I hope you are feeling better now. Cancer changes your life, but it doesn't have to change you or become all there is in life. I had cancer (Wilms tumor) 48 years ago, and have lived a wonderful life. Hey Andrew, I am 13 years old and I play for the Orangeville Flyers. I read your story in the Hometown hockey magazine that you get in the mail and I thought your story was the best in the hole magazine. Alot of people must have read the story, because you can tell by looking at home many people have come to your website. It must have been amazing to meet Vince Carter and alot of famous people. But you had ups and downs that might have not been good. I'm also a Maple Leaf Fan. Well if u wanna talk to me just e-mail me at airhawk_2002@hotmail.com or add me to your list on msn messenger if u have it. Well I don't wanna keep typing so hopefully the rest of your life is healty and fun.

Hi Andrew,
What great news it is to read of your battle and victory over cancer. I'm familiar with the year you had and happy for you and your family. You're a tough guy to persevere the treatment, all the trips to the hospitals, clinics and early morning/late nights. I believe those that survive this disease are blessed by God and destined to do something special. I'll remember you and your family in my prayers as we give thanks for the remission my son is experiencing. Your dad is right, what a difference a year makes. Keep up the good fight.

Hi Andrew! Already talked to your Dad and you guys sound like big time Leafs fans. Hope you are feeling well and can enjoy the NHL playoffs -- but with Michael Peca playing for the Islanders it's got to be confusing for you Toronto people! Keep up the good work and get back in the net!

Hi Andrew, we just want to say how lucky we were to have known you this past hockey season (2001-2002). Your courage has been an inspiration to all of us. You're a great goalie, but especially a great kid. God bless you.

Hi Andrew, its Michael (#13). I think you are an excellent goalie, and we always had extra confidence when you were in net. Hope we play together again. I'm glad you're going to be O.K.

Hi Andrew and Family,
My son Caedan has a Caringbridge Webpage, too. We are at Sick Kids waiting for his BMT on Thursday. I loved reading your webpage as the news got better and better with great CT Scan results. Caedan has his last two Total Body Irradiation tomorrow at Princess Margaret Hosp. It's also where his Dad will donate his Bone Marrow on Thursday!
Caedan is a big basketball fan and is very impressed with your picture with Vince Carter. Very cool.
Hope all is going well.

I think it is great that your son made it and is in remission. My son was diagnosed last July with the same cancer, fortunately he didn't make it because of a side effect from the chemotherapy. God Bless your family.

Andrew, your story is one of great hope and courage. The road you've travelled - always filled with hope, is an inspiration to everyone who has the good fortune of meeting you. Daniel admires your game and loves playing on the team - don't let his flying out of the change room fool you! May God protect you and your loving family always.

I'm glad you are doing so well, Andrew. You are just a few months younger than our Katie, and your cancer was in the same place as hers (except hers was by the right eye.) She didn't get radiation the first time and her cancer came back in the same place. But this time she did get chemo and radiation so we are much more hopeful that it will stay gone this time. We will be praying that you both stay in remission!

Hi Andrew, I read about you on my grandsons' website. His name was Dylan and he also had rhabdo, but he had the very bad kind. He is living in heaven now and we really miss him. He was quite a lively little boy! Tomorrow would have been his 5th birthday, we are going to celebrate by sending ballons off. Am so glad that you are remission and pray that you will continue to do so. Sounds like you are very busy, that's great. Our family will keep you and your family in our prayers. May God continue to bless you and your family. Dylan's grandmother - Linda

She is now 40 years old and has a beautiful 16 year old daughter. She is cancer free. You are inspiration to all. You are a true fighter, always ready to play and never complaining. Great pictures! I think you should keep your head bald. It really looks good. Only cute guys like you can pull it off.
I had my head almost to bald when Elliott was going through Chemo. He never lost his hair, it just matted up like nappy dog fur. I ended up shaving his head after chemo in hopes that it would grow in healthy looking and it did and now it grows so fast it's hard to keep up with the cuts.
Let me know when your exact dates for Disney are and have fun!

"Our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but by how we react to what happens; Not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes. It is a catalyst a spark that creates extroardinary results."

Hi Andrew:

I am very happy to hear that you are now in remission. You may not be aware of whom I am, but I had the pleasure of working with your dad for several years. I know that he cherished you and your brothers and still does today. I certainly cherish my three children, Victoria, Charlotte and Andrew of 15 months after having learned of your challenges with life. You are certainly a person of great character. I wish you good health and many years of happiness.

Say hello to your dad for me.

Sincerely,
