Elliott the Brave

This is a story of a normal 2 yr old that was suddenly diagnosed with a Wilm's Tumor on his left kidney.
On January 22,2001 just one day after we received our health insurance, Elliott was at the babysitter's and I had just arrived to pick him up when the sitter noticed his urine was adark amber and there were 2 small blood clots on the surface of his diaper. Immediatly I called the doctor. He wanted him to come in to the office since he was not in any pain and was not running a fever. a urine culture was taken and we went home. His regular doctor(Dr. Lisa)was off that day,so I called her at home that night(she is a friend and her husband is our minister)She suggested that an ultrasound be ran. She had a feeling what we were dealing with because her brother had a Wilm's as child, but of course she was not saying so until a few things were confirmed.
JANUARY 26,2001
Ultrasound confirmed a mass in his left kidney.Eventhough the tech could not tell me anything, her questions were repetative and the left side had colors showing up, when the right side did not.The Dr. of radiology came in I knew something was wrong. We went home packed our bags, made a few calls and off to Cincinnati Children's Hospital we went.
Elliott was pure ham for the next 2 days. The nurses couldn't resist letting him sit at the desk with them.
JANUARY 29,2001
Elliott was on an add on list for his surgery,so we waited all day.I was able to go into the sterile prep room where the anesethia was given. I held him in my arms,he cried as the medication entered,he became limp and said "I go night night mommy", then he was totally lifeless. It was the most horrible thing I have ever experienced. The room began to spin and I had to go outside.
Surgery only took a little over 2 hours. They removed his left kidney and surrounding lymphnodes.
ICU-- He was pitiful looking, tubes everywhere. So helpless and sickly. We had opted for an epidural for pain.It was wonderful. He was out of pain but not doped up.The next day we were transfered to the oncolgy unit for 2hrs to wait for a bed elsewhere. That was when it really hit me, CANCER!My child has cancer.I never questioned why. I went head strong with my faith in the Lord.I put it in his hands.
The next few days were a little rough, beepers and the nurses always coming in and checking him. He didn't want anybody to touch him.
FEBRUARY 2,2001
First dose of Actino-D was given. It went well, no sickness. That night around 11pm he went in for a central line placement. All went well.
FEBRUARY 3,2001
Epidural and catheter removed I.V. hooked up to C-line.He was a little happier.
FEBRUARY 5,2001
WE ARE FINALLY HOME!!!!!!
He immediatly started to act my normal, active Elliott.
