Good Evening Sarah, I Pray that Luke's pain will reduce. I also pray for the GVH will diminish and fade away. That is the only barrier left and I wish he wasn't in so much pain. I know it is hard to watch him in this state but please be strong. I'm glad to hear the physicians are very concerned. The pain specialist will assist you tremendously. I think they heard your cries. So did God. Our prayers are with you Luke. I'm glad you have a lot of friends that are with you along this journey. I'm glad you are able to assist others through their journey. This will be battle for all but we will fight with you all the way until Luke is home safe and sound. We love you I hope you both have a better nights sleep. I will say extra prayers for Luke's severe pain. Good night and sweet dreams, Love Sue Andy Nicholas and Matthew

Dr. Do, My husband is a neonatologist and has been in practice for 23yrs. Our son was dx with ALL '97. He suffered extreme complications related to chemo, as a result he has no pancreas, spleen, or gallbladder. We have been to four states and five hospitals and have experienced the same frustrating problems with doctors/residents/med students. I wish Luke an uncomplicated, smooth, speedy recovery as he begins his cancer-free life.

Sarah and Lam, As physicians, I know you'd agree that there are hospital employees who are capable, conscientious and caring. I've met some of them there myself. But when some members of the transplant staff--from nurses up to the highest levels--fail to communicate with you and with one another and make serious mistakes, it becomes impossible to trust them with your child's life. I've heard the stories which you haven't posted on this site. I don't blame you guys for being frustrated and angry. I hope that the administration there wakes up and makes some reforms. As you said, Lam, there's a lot to be thankful for. Luke found a donor--1 person in 4.5 million. That was like winning the lottery! His respiratory infection is gone. His counts are up. We hope the fungal infection and GVHD will soon be under control. Hang in there!

Hi Sarah Lam and precious Luke, Thanks Lam for letting me see Sarah today we had a wonderful talk. i don't blame you for being frustrated with the staff. Remembering it is just a job to them. Yes, you do need to remind them that it is not just a job. His name is Luke Do, not just a kid, he is your son. You know what he is going through because you observe all day and all night. you have experience and knowledge. HELLO!!!! HELP LUKE!!!! NOW!!!! You don't care about what happened on their weekend. Don't worry the frustration is finally showing and they will get the hint. Be vocal if needed. That is their job. On another note thank God that you found the problem hopefully you can treat this and move forward. Luke needs another up day, and so does Mom and Dad. Be strong you guys and don't worry he will be fine. God Bless LUKE!! Love Sue Andy nicholas and Matthew

But you are right, they should be giving you the respect. I really really hope Luke starts feeling like his old self soon!!! There are a LOT of people praying for you all!!!

"A blessing from our forefathers, and a blessing from our foremothers: may the source of strength who blessed the ones before us, help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing and let us say Amen. Bless those in need of healing with refuah shlemah, the renweal of body, the renewal of spirit and let us say Amen."

Hello There, I saw your website on another caringbridge page. My granddaughter had a marrow transplant on October 26th. We know how you are feeling and our thoughts are with you. I check Luke's page daily to see his progress. Our Meg also had a matched unrelated donor. As far as the RSV goes, we were told not to expect to go through the transplant process without at least one big thing happening so I guess that this must be yours. Keep the faith, all will work out.

Hi everyone, Thanks for the pictures his smile is wonderful. Don't worry these things are minor now and they are just the final hurdles that you all have to leap over. I know you are tired. Please just feel for the Lord he is still with you. Even these days too. You will have the up days and down days. Just tell the lord your aches and pains and he will listen. If you feel discouraged take a walk to the little yard there it is very tranquil and come back to see the wonderful creation god has given to you Luke. He is worth every moment that you are spending. You are the greatest parents anyone can ask for. Your strength and love for Luke is incredible and I admire you greatly. Don't worry you will bring your ray of sunshine home in just a few more weeks. To Luke and his parents,
I am Kayli's Aunt Sani and Jennie's sister. I too spent 6 months living in the Hospital with my 6 year old daughter. From severe complications from having Meningitis. I know exactly what it's like to have a child with a serious illness.
I just wanted to wish Luke (who by the way is sooo Darn Cute!!) and your family strenght and happiness.
Luke has been in my daily prayers for him to overcome this disease. We often do not understand WHY? Innocent children have to endure such pain? Only God knows why. God ultimately has his plans for all of us. So hang in there!!
The power of prayer I believe helped my daughter (Lexi) get better and to finally be able to come home. There are lots of people out there praying for all the little Lukes and Kaylis of the world.
To your family from ours we wish you all the best!!

Luke and parents,
I'm pleased to see your doing better than some of your days in the past. We lost our nephew Michael Adrian Albizu to Leukemia 1 1/2 years ago. He was cared for at Stanford Hospital as well. It was his 6th day into his transplant when a persistent fever led to convulsion, then ultimate lack of oxygen only to result in brain damage and death.
I will pray for you Luke! Your ever so cute and remind me so much of Michael. I want to you see beat this and will pray that you make it just fine to your 100th day with the transplant!
Parents: I know what a roller coaster ride the care has been for you. Stay strong!! I will pray for you too!

Hello, Tomorrow is a new day and the days that go by mean the growing of his new marrow. You had mentioned this week being the most critical and this week is half way through. My prayers are with Luke and the family throughout this heart felt week. With the weeks to follow. Luke looks good as ever. We miss you all. God bless you with strength and courage to continue to fight with the stress and anxiety of this whole ordeal. Love you all Andy Sue Nicholas and Matthew

Hi Sarah, Wish I could come and see you both but Matthew has had a cold so I don't want any germs around Luke. As soon as Matthew kicks this bug I will come and see you. We have a few more pics for his room from Nick's classmates. My prayers are with you for this crutial week and don't worry the nose bleeds are just so graphic and I understand but he is still spunky and strong which is so great to hear. I love to hear he resists that just shows how strong his will is. Keep your head up and know prayers are always with you and your family. Love you all Sue Andy Matthew and Nicholas

This past weekend we had a practice training at Lake San Antonio (the site of the Wildflower Triathlon). We wanted to fold 1000 cranes in honor of Luke's birthday, but our plans were foiled by rainy weather. Needless to say, Luke was on all of our minds. He personally helped me get through the weekend. I know that regardless of how uncomfortable I was camping & training in the rain, Luke was fighting worst conditions. I sucked it up to honor him & prayed for his well being a lot! I hope the family is holding up well despite the eventful days & nights since the transfusion.

Hi Guys, Glad to hear how well Luke is doing, what a trooper. Have you guys talked to the doctors about donating the platelets yourself. He may have less chance of reacting. Some docs dont use related blood...not sure why, but we were told it was fine after BMT. Love, Dana

Hi all, Sarah it was wonderful to see you today. It is so good to hear Luke is well. Those doctors do have to do their job a little better but Luke's advantage is he has you and Lam to look so closely at their every move. With your experience and knowledge it is helping Luke all the way. It's great to see Luke's spunk and vitality. He knows what he wants and he is a definite fighter. That comes from the both of you. He is a part of you both and seeing him I see the strength that you both have. God will not give us more than we can bare. Concentrate but please don't be discouraged you and the Lord are watching after Luke. Do as you have been and you will catch those awful mistakes. They can make excuses to others but they can't with you. May God bless you and be with you this week especially. Love always Andy Sue Nicholas and Matthew

Hi Guys I was just reading your journal and I want you to know there are lots of people out there praying for your family and especially Luke. I've been in your shoes my son was diagonosed with JCML June 2000. He had his BMT Sept 2000 and things are going great. His transplant was very difficult and he had many of the side effects as well but he is proof that things will get better. Keep positive and keep fighting Luke!!

I check into the website often to see how things are going. I don't always have time to write, but I want you to know that I am thinking of you all and hoping that you will get through this difficult time. You are right about being the best advocates for your son...........it's a shame with all you have to do every day, that you have to do the nurses job too sometimes, but, it's neccessary. Afterall, Luke is your only patient.....they have many....not excusing them, but it's the nature of the beast. Unfortunately!! We had a few slip ups too, and it's disheartening. Get some rest when you can and take care of yourselves.
All the best,

Sarah and Lam, Pearl has kept me abreast about your son's illness and the ordeals you have had to face. She has been very pro-active in getting the message out, and I have provided her some suggestions regarding key individuals in the press and public policy who might highlight the special difficulties you have faced. I am hopeful we can garner some interest among Asian American journalists here in the Bay Area. Most importantly, I send you best wishes on the full recovery of your son. Being a father of three school aged children, I can only imagine the strength you must demonstrate to provide encouragement and support for your son. Good luck.

Dear Sarah and Lam, I am so glad that you found me through Dana and I hope that I have been able to help in some way in your own struggles with JMML. It is a rare and deadly leukemia, and each case may be treated a little differently from the rest, but Brian is proof that our kids can get through it. The road is long and hard and bumpy.........much like a roller coaster ride, except you really can't get off! So hang on tight.....to each other, to your family and friends, to your new "family" in the medical community and especially to your children, and just love them!! It is so easy to say just take it one day at a time, but it is truly the ONLY way to get through this. I won't go on here because I have already written to you privately, but I wanted to send my support on your website for others to see too, that Luke has a wonderful chance at getting through this. It may have taken 5 yrs and two transplants to get where he is today, but Brian is currently free from JMML and we will celebrate 3 yrs without leukemia in June! There IS hope! Hang on to that and the knowledge that these kids are so very special.....they have a strength and spirit like nobody else!
Let me know whatever I can do. I will think of Luke and Kayli and Zachary and Cindy and all the others out there that are fighting this beast and pray that they all come through with flying colors!! Let them all join the "miracle club" with Brian!(www.caringbridge.com/co/brianspage)
All the best!

Sarah, your spirit is amazing. You and Lam are really handling this with grace. For this being a rare disease it amazes me that Luke and Kayli will be at the same hospital for BMT at the same time. A little boy Colby is now at Children's in Pittsburg and will have his marrow on Friday. Cindy and Libbie will be following suit. There is also another child, Jessy, that should be in the BMT part of treatment. I am glad we all found each other. Hang in there. What a beautiful family. I am so sorry to have to meet you here, and under these circumstances. My son was diagnosed at 3 1/2 with ALL, and my world fell apart that day. I cant even imagine a rarer form, and so much younger and more helpess. I wont ask you how you cope, because I know its day by day, sometimes hour by hour. Luke is a tough little guy though and he will be fine, you'll see. Leukemia just plain stinks. Its a shame that in this day & age the only thing that truly does not discriminate is cancer.... there's way too many kids out there with it.

LAM AND SARAH,
IN READING THROUGH SEVERAL OF THE COMMENTS IN THE ADDRESS BOOK, IT LOOKS LIKE LUKE HAS LOTS OF PRAYERS BEING LIFTED UP FOR HIS SUCCESSFUL RECOVERY, AND I WILL CERTAINLY ADD MY OWN TO IT AS WELL. SOMETIMES TIMES LIKE THIS COME INTO OUR LIVES SO WE WILL LOOK TO GOD FOR OUR HELP, AND I WOULD REFER YOU TO THE 23RD PSALM FOR ENCOURAGEMENT AND STRENGTH THROUGH THIS "VALLEY". MY PRAYERS GO WITH YOU AND SARAH AND ESPECIALLY LUKE DURING THIS TIME THAT YOU WILL ONE DAY BE ABLE TO ENJOY ALL THE WONDERFUL TIMES WITH LUKE THAT ARE MEANT TO BE.

Dear Luke, Lam, Sarah, and Christina, Our heartfelt prayers are with Luke and your family. I spent last evening reading your journal entries which are remarkable. Luke is so fortunate to have such love and strength from his parents. I think your wonderful openness with Luke's family and community are inspiring. As to entertaining a two year old, I think the advice to living and being in the moment is powerful. Art projects also work well- dot paints, play dough, wiki stix, crayons, stickers (there are lots of train stickers out there), coloring books. I would be happy to bring these things by. Luke is in our prayers. Love Elizabeth Greyber

Hi Sarah--I was so touched by the fact that you remembered my birthday during this extremely difficult time. Thank you so much for the beautiful card. Please let me know where you will be staying in Palo Alto and how I can reach you there. I'd like to come down and maybe get out for a good walk and lunch. Sunshine and exercise always helps! I pray for God to give you and Lam strength to get through this difficult time and for Luke to respond well to the treatment and come through this strong and smiling. Kimmie and I absolutely fell in love with him when we were there in November. You've been my best friend since 6th grade--you know I'd do anything in the world to help. Again, please let me know where/how to reach you in Palo Alto. See you soon. Love, Deb

We think about you guys all the time, especially little Luke. We wish we were closer so we could help more--you guys need breaks! I don't know how you keep going. Went to the Vietnamese New Years festival here in Chicago today. Had Vietnamese food and saw some awesome dragon dancers (maybe they were lions). Luke would have enjoyed that! Took flyers about Luke and info about the Vietnamese-American girl in Colorado. We hope to work with the local Vietnamese association to organize a bone marrow drive in the Asian American communities here and raise awareness of the problem of too few donors for Asian-Americans. People were very concerned and sorry to hear about Luke's illness. Please take care of yourselves. Try to take some breaks. I know you want to be there for Luke constantly, but you really need to get away and give yourselves breaks every couple of days. That will help with the stress a lot. So Lam, get out your basketball, and Sarah, put on your jogging shoes. Please try. Love you guys.

To the Do Family: My thoughts and prayers are with your family. I feel as if I know you because I am a friend of Lam's sister, Cuc and we talk often about your darling children. ("my babies" as Cuc calls them) Luke's site is great and the links are very informative. My heritage is Hungarian, Dutch and French American so I would be of no help to Luke, but I plan to become registered. Maybe I could help someone else. The next time I give blood, the Blood Institute will just take an extra vial or two of blood. It's as simple as that, I was told. I appreciate all the information that you have put out there for people to be aware of the importance of registering and what to expect if you are chosen to be a donor. It seems like a fairly easy thing to do which should not involve much pain. Especially not compared to the pain that the recipient has been through. Again, my prayers are with you each and every day.
