May God give strength when you are tired and weak and may God give those of us who are not directly affected by Cancer an undeniable desire to stand along side those who are and make a difference. - Because you so openly share your sons illness, you allow us to become educated and empathetic to Cancer and those it affects. Thank you and God Bless

Hi Terri and Alex and family,
I keep checking in to your website for updates, as you are often on my mind and in my prayers. Best wishes this fall getting back into the school routine. PS. we watched old family movies with my brothers and sisters this August - got a lot of laughs out of them. You were in alot of the movies with me - feeding the goats and horses, down at the pond, etc. Love,

Dear Alex's mother,
Good luck with your child's condition. We wanted to know if you would like if some children would get together and start a group that is called Kid Cancer Kare. This program would provide your child with companions to talk, play, and just hang out with. The companions would be of his own age, or maybe in the teen years. Thank you for your cooperation. Please contact us with your answer at either : emuskin@pacbell.net, qtlizgal314@aol.com, ydiesel2@aol.com

Alex is, as always, Big man on Campus at school. He is doing so well!! Our only problem is that Alex only has so many sides and can only accomodate so many friends to sit next to him at Mat Time. Austin came to the Easter event. he came in during the songs and just \slid right in there with Alex. He is one of the hi points of all the children's day. Thanks for sharing your boys. I love them both --you know that.

Hi Terri,
Wish you could have heard the sermon at our church today, from Psalm 127, about control in our lives and how it has to be in God's hands. Really meant alot to me and would definately have struck a chord with you, too. We have to remember that it is all out of our control, let's let Him do the worrying for us,etc. My prayers are with your family. Love, Diana

What a doozy of a camping trip!! Sounds like you handled things very well though! I would have been a basket case. LOL Next time, do take it easier and stay in the shade more. :-)

That was just so adorably SWEET of Austin to tuck Alex in for a nap while in daycare. He deserves a Gold Medal too when all this is over! Cheers for Austin!!!

Take care and I will check back again.

Your "today I am thankful for" is always such an inspiration to me. I have so much to be thankful for and I take it for granted over and over. Thank you for reminding me to always be thankful for what the Lord has blessed me with.
Today I am thankful for my family and our health, good friends and most importantly God's son Jesus dying on the cross to give us eternal life with Him in heaven.
I am so glad to hear that Alex is doing well, I will continue to keep him and the rest of your family in my prayers.
God Bless You,
Laurie

Hi everyone!
Gee,"cold front," eh? I am very jealous. Hope the camping is fun, and fairly bug free. We'll be keeping you in our prayers, for the next round of meds. Alan gets vincristine too. I think when it is combined with other chemos, the side effects seem to be worse, than when it is given alone.
Best wishes from Alan and I. We'll be thinking of you!

Thanks for signing Matthew's guestbook Terri. Yes, that would be very fun to meet at Disneyland! Is Alex going to make a wish? These side effects do break our hearts don't they--but the meds are needed unfortunately. Have a great time camping!! Thinking of you often.

Hi Terri.
I always enjoy your page.
One of the kids at clinic made a picture
that hangs on the wall by the treatment area. It says,
"These nurses don't bite, they just need blood." (grin)
Rocks were a great gift. How wonderful of Alex's nurses to receive the love behind the gift.

"Today I am grateful for teachers who choose their career because they truly enjoy teaching children, for the warm embrace of a child in the early morning hours, and for God, who reminds daily, how fortunate I really am."
I want to echo your sentiments, because it fit so perfectly with how I was feeling today! God is right there with us, even if we only see one set of footprints in the sand.
Alan has a great set of teachers this year too, and I keep pinching myself to see if we really are back-to-school!
They have done so much to make sure that he is comfortable and safe, (knock on wood) that it will continue, and that Alex's counts will stay so high!

In the quiteness of this evening, I am amazed, awed, and encouraged by what you have written over these last months. I am glad in a way that I haven't checked in since the first entry, because it was awesome to walk through the steps of the last months with you, all at one time. To read your chronicle of the daily battle against cancer and the joys of small moments and God's blessings. I am so proud of you and Mark, and Austin, and of course most of all - Alex. God is surely using you you and these journal entries to minister to all of us. Isn't it amazing how God shows us through special needs children how to be thankful for the smallest things? And you know - thats not a bad place to be! We are and will continue to pray for Alex until the day we read in your thankful list, "Alex is cancer free!". 'May God bless you all, and keep you. May He cause His face to shine upon you, and give you peace.' . . . . and health! With much love, Shelly

Hi Terri and Happy Birthday Alex,

I know what you mean about school. I too have struggled with sending Chloe this year but have decided against it. There are just too many germs floating around. Instead I'm going to home school her his year (Pre-K) and I will let her go next year when she is finished with treatment. I just don't want to take any chances. I never went to Pre-K, instead just went to Kidnegarden. And maybe deep down I just want to keep her home with me a little longer.

Hi Terri,
It sounds like Alex is on the same protocol as my daughter Chloe (POG#9605). It does get easier after the hospital stays. We have just finished week 100. When the drs. told me 130 weeks, it seemed like a lifetime, but we are coming up on two years with 6 months to go. Boy will we have a party after this is all said and done. I have finally had a chance to check your website and I am overwhelmed. Your honesty in journaling these experiences and thankfulness expressed at the end of each enty are so moving. I know God works for good in all things, and I am certain that God gave you Alex and gave Alex to you for solid reasons.

I have been asked to give the children's parable in church this Sunday for Mother's Day. I am still at a loss for what to say, but I am so inspired by reading your story that I am much closer to knowing true mother's love.

Hi Terri,
I have been checking often for your new update and it is finally here. You have probably been too busy with the "Prednisone" baby that you haven't had a chance to even turn on your computer! I remember when I put Matthew's blankie into the washing machine and he did the same thing!!! He cried and screamed uncontrollably the ENTIRE time it was washing and drying. Nothing at all consoled him over this. (read his updates on April 10 and 26 for more on this)

I decided that he still had to go by the rules and stand in the corner if he broke them, just like before he was diagnosed. (No you are not allowed to hit your brother or scream at me.) I love him with all of my heart and soul, but I don't want a "spoiled brat" when all this is over.

Glad to hear that Alex is doing good and I think about you and your family often. Take care and try to have patience and a feeling a calmness within the "wrath of the storm."

Terri,
The following is a poem my friend wrote and sent me about her son. I thought you might like to read it.

When James was Sick on Easter & What he taught me

Sick eyes, sad eyes, tired eyes staring up at me
My eyes seeking, sorrowing, sending love to thee
With all the sincerity of my soul,
How I wish I could make you whole.

Looking down at you from above,
My eyes will strengthen you with love.
It’s the only medicine I know
And though I hate to see you so,
There is a peace I feel in giving;
In these moments I feel I’m really living.

On Easter morn you are ill
Is it Heavenly Father’s will?
He who loved His only Begotten Son?
But why do you have to miss the fun?
My heart aches for your sake
Though you’re too young to know what’s at stake.
You do not grumble, cry or whine,
Your smiles are smaller but still mine.

Oh, if I could only learn to more like you be
To open my eyes, look up and see,
When I am sick, tired or sad
Do I focus only at all that is bad
Or do I look beyond…
To see my Father’s eyes looking down on me?

I gave you Easter Eggs and candy galore.
James, in being sick you give me more.
You teach me to see heaven’s light
To have faith in all that is right:
To know He is always there above,
And that our Father’s eyes send us the strength of His love.

I will never forget the first day I met you and how bright your eyes were. It was your first time teaching and you were faced with a daunting task. Being the big mouth in class was my job. You were always so sweet and understanding and PATIENT!!!

May the Lord bless you all and may there be peace in heart each day. All your friends have told you how the Lord is blessing you. But you and Mark know how blessed you are and the Lord is always a whisper away!!

Ask and it will be given for the father knows your need before you do. Grace and mercy and Love to your family this day and everyday.

With love and prayers,

Hi Terri! I finally am signing the guest book. I think this is my 3rd or 4th visit. I can't say I enjoy coming here, because of course I would rather be checking on his soccer page or something similar, but it is nice being able to check on things with out asking. We all want to help, but there is not much we can do, unless you ask. Take care of Alex but also take care of yourself & each other. And don't forget to ask for what you need.

Dear Terri and Mark (and the rest of the family!)

If friendship and prayers will cure Alex, he will be fine in no time!

If we didn't have weeds, we wouldn't appreciate flowers.
If we didn't have hunger, we wouldn't appreciate food.
If we didn't have sickness, we wouldn't appreciate health.
And if we didn't have love, we wouldn't appreciate each other.

(I just made that little ditty up!)

Just in case you didn't know
If god had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it.
If god had a wallett, your photo would be in it
He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning.
When you want to talk, He'll listen.
He could live anywhere in the universe and He chose your heart.
And that Christmas gift He sent you in Bethlehem?
Face it my friend, He is crazy about you!

Dear Terri and family,
My prayer for your family has been one for peace in these troubled waters. When you or your family come to mind, I offer up a prayer for strength and comfort for all of you. It was wonderful to hear about the website. Thanks for the information so we can keep up to date on Alex's progress. Dear Mark and Terri,

My name is Johnny Funderburg. I am the Pastor of First Baptist Church in Whitesboro, Texas. I am Carl Poff's pastor. Carl has shared with us about Alex and please know that we have taken it as a personal responsibility to be praying for him, you two, and Austin.

We sent you a care package a few days ago. Some of out "little ones" put some of their creative works in there. We hope it brings a little light to Alex's and Austin's day.

You sure have an advocate in your grandfather Carl. We love him to death, too. May God bless you more than you could ask or think--that is our prayer.

Folks who care,

Dr. Johnny Funderburg and Congregation at

Dear hurting parents of Alex,
My parents hurt too, March 1, 1974. I have learned many things since then and one of them is to pray for others, during the (storm) that you are going thru. Cathy told me about you and your son because it was heavy on her heart and she knew that we had been praying for our granddaughter, who was having the same problem walking and running. After several doctors, lab tests, different dosages of medicine, some making her sick; we still don't have answers! Yesterday I celebrated another birthday and now 26 years free of (cancer) what an ugly word! I do praise our "LORD" There is hope and there is power in prayer. I just want you to know that you don't have to do all the praying yourself. Try to rest when you can and give the energy level to your son and keep your faith!
Alex, your family, knowledge of your doctors and nurses will be included in my prayers.
In Christ's love,
Betty Lou, Cathy's aunt

I'm Cathy H's mother and when she told me "her little friend" had an interesting story about her son I read it. Glad things are going well and hope that it will continue to do so. My niece has the same symptoms so anxious for them to find out. Good luck and you're doing a good job.

Dear Terri-

Thanks so much for letting me know about Alex's web page. We met recently at a graduate school class and then during discussions about Alex's care and coverage with the HF HMO- I think of Alex often and want to assure you that Sue Anderson, Alex's Case Manager, will make sure that Alex gets the care he needs -- and assist you with your needs as well!

All of the nurses at the Health Plan send their prayers and best wishes to you and your family--I look forward to following news on the web page- God Bless!

Dear Terri,

As I read your wonderful journal, my thoughts went back to a comment you made in an e-mail to me a few weeks ago. Something like "I feel so honored that God chose me to be Alex's mom". My eyes fill with tears and my heart swells as I think of how blessed and honored Alex is to have you and Mark for parents, and Austin as his brother. Our family is committed to pray for Alex - and your whole family - for the duration. We are continually lifting all of you up in prayer, asking God to heal Alex completely while at the same time using this time to draw you and Mark closer to Him, helping you to learn what He wants you to through this experience. And after reading the first, of what I hope are many installments, I see that is happening in a beautiful, awe inspiring way. Thank you for sharing with the rest of us, all that God is doing in your lives. With much love, Shelly

Dear Terri,

What a loving act to help keep your "beloveds" informed of your lives. I pray for the combined strength of your whole family to walk each day in the Light of Peace and a gentle spirit. Keep watching those boys...watch 'em good and long and hard, cause they say if you blink...you'll miss it!

Dear Alex and Terri,
I'm glad you made a page! Now I can check up on you, Alex, Austin, and Mark. And it's so inspirational when other parents of children with cancer sign his book. I love it. I love all entries!!!

Your story of how Alex was dx brought tears to my eyes. It is so true what we see...through the eyes of our children. Hang in there. We will all make it and be better people because of where we have been and what we have learned. I am so glad you have such wonderful support!! We also have to learn how to let others help us. They need to help, and we need to let them. I applaud them and you.

Love and Blessings,

Wow, your story is similar to ours. Daniel last March began with sore knee, we had 14 Dr's visits
before we finally got a dx. of ALL. Thank God, I just kept returning to Dr's. We saw family Dr
Orthapedic Surgeon, 2 emerg. Dr's, 2 visits to eye Dr.(eyes were hurting), Pediatrician, blood work
and finally were told he had Juvenile Rhemotoid Arthritus, oh, yes we also saw a physiotherapist
, when we saw Rhemotologist, he said he didn't have JRA and sent us home, I called him
back and said if he doesn't have jra what does he have. He said you sound real worried and did
more blood work and finally a bone marrow test and Daniel was diagnosed July 28, 1999. I wonder
if leg pain means we got it earlier or later? He has standard risk. Anyways, he is doing really well.
Thank God. Great site.

Dear Mom of Alex, It does get easier. 130
weeks seems like a lifetime but it goes fast.
My daughter Chloe was dx with Leukemia in July
98. We have been in treatment 1-1/2 years
with 9 months left. She has done remarkably
well. Keep the faith, and we will remember
Alex in our prayers.

The Giver

My simple gift to you my friend,
Is to think of you and pray,
For now you need God’s daily help,
And strength along the way.

I ask you, Lord, to take from me,
My strength in all I do,
And lend it to my friend in need,
To help to see her through.

When my friend is strong again,
In both her heart and soul,
Have her pass along the strength,
And play the Giver’s role.

~M

Glad to see Alex is strong again. Children teach us so much more than we ever can know.
