Easton Updates

Easton, July 4th, 2009




Easton is a 6-year-old little boy undergoing treatment for choroid plexus carcinoma, a rare, malignant brain tumor, at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. He was diagnosed on January 9, 2004, and had his first surgery January 12. After a four-week recovery, he began treatment at St. Jude in February: 10 weeks of chemo, a second surgery, 10 more weeks of chemo, and six weeks of conformal radiation. He completed a second 20 weeks of "maintenance" chemo in February 2005.

Just a quick update...

* Easton is going to be in the third grade this fall! I can't believe how quickly time passes. He continues to receive tons of support at school, but he is still in a mainstream classroom.

* Our biggest concern is reading comprehension, as his short-term memory has been affected by all of the treatment he received. We are going to have him evaluated by a neuro-psychologist in the fall, who will be able to help us determine what the best educational setting for Easton is, and how we can help him compensate for the memory issues. Amazingly, he is a spelling ace, and is not struggling in math despite everything.

* Easton has started out the summer in golf camp, which he is thoroughly enjoying. We will chill for the rest of June, and then have a few fun trips planned before school begins in August...

* And, most importantly, CLEAN SCANS in February. It was the first follow-up trip to Memphis that Easton & I have made without Gary, but we made it and got the good news! Barring any other issues, we do not have to return to Memphis until next February.
