Glad I found your site! My oldest son's name is Nick. He's a little bigger than you, 23 and 6'4". But I remember him at your age so well. Hope you're liking school and making new friends. Sounds like you like sports...that's great.
I'll be dropping back by to see how you're doing. Let us know what you're doing for fun since you started school!

Hi Nick! Glad to hear you are doing good. I went to Florida to spend some time with my son. I had never been in a plane before but just loved it. Went out to the ocean and some of the beaches. I did not have time to go to Disney World but will next time. Sorry it had been so long since I have checked in with you. I talked to Aunt Cindy a few day's ago. Glad to see things are going well there! My friend Amie & I are trying to raise awareness for more kids' sites and get more support and prayers going. Many of us are in the same situation of having our lives turned upside down. If you havent already, soon you will be getting guestbook messages from someone who has "adopted" you (if you dont want to participate just let us know and we will understand). We know the encouragement from others is important, and even if you dont feel you need it, someone else may be visiting your site and drawing strength from you and how well you are doing! We will be praying for you .

By the way Mike, Didn't you say you were going to do a marathon for TNT? Which one did you pick? I hope you still plan on doing this. I know some of us alum from Disney are planning on doing the Rock-n-Roll Marathon in June. We would love to have Nick as our honor patient again. Hi Serums!

I am so glad that you're back home now Nick. I just wanted you to know that there are so many people thinking and praying for you. I haven't been the most visible person on on your guestbook pages, but I certainly do check in on your progress. I was so glad to hear that you were on maintenance!!!

I bet you are excited for Disney World! And who wouldn't be? It's absolutely wonderful and you will really enjoy it.

A lot of the TNT runners who ran the Disney marathon on your behalf are still keeping in touch one another. We often talk about you and the updates we've read on your website. I was lucky to have met you at our DaVinci's pasta fundraiser way back when, but I think there are a few others who didn't get the chance. We were talking the other day that it would be great to get together with you and your family sometime-- perhaps that pizza place that was mentioned as an idea for our group's gathering a long time ago??? We can tell you about Disney World, the marathon, show you pictures--- and get you even more excited about going!

Take care and I'll check in on you again soon.

Hi, Nick! I just got this web site address from my Leukemia & Lymphoma Society mentor who helped me get to go to Disney World two months ago (Jan '02). I was a marathon runner (my very first one!) & my honor patient was a young girl also treated for her ALL at Children's Mercy. She & other children like YOU were about the only thing to keep me going!!! I have now decided to become a Heme/Onc specialist and will be training for this at Mercy, so I wanted to say "Howdy" & I hope to meet you some day in clinic! Have a fabulous time at Disney!-P.S. Magic Kingdom is AWESOME!!!

The feeling of Support and Grace was Beyond words is all I can say.

It's great to hear from all the runner's, when I say that i mean the disney runner's and the new CFS runner's .. To all CFS runner's it now only take's 20 step's per day to get to put a story on Nick's web page and get a buck donated in honor of Nick Serum, the nice thing about this fund raiser is I can change the rule's at any time, so if you don't like the rule's let me know, and I will change them,we must keep raising money for the cause, it would be great if someone jumped in and doubled all the money that we have raised just from the storie's that have been written in from all the great runners, keep fighting everyone, whatever your battle, Karen and I are extending our offer to donate for every story $1.00 in honor of Nick untill the end of Feb. please write often God Bless

Hi Nick, I have CFS, and what I know is when I get really sick some how I get through it, and then when I feel better it is hard to remember how bad it was....I hope it is like this for you......................I'll keep you in my prayers............

Hello there, Nick. I am a friend of your Aunt Arleen. I have had CFS a long time. On some days, I feel so dizzy and sick to my stomach and head achy, that I have to haul myself out of bed. It's like having the flu all the time. YUCK. Then on other days, it's better :))))

I was thinking about the word marathon. Most often people think of running and racing. Years ago they had dance marathons to see who could dance the most hours.

I think marathons are about endurance...being able to hold out...put up with...or manage something. I figure that anyone who is really sick must do a marathon. IT takes a really strong person like your Aunt Arleen or maybe like you to be in that marathon. WHat helps is that lots of people are clapping, lots of people are loving and lots of people are thinking about you.

Sometimes I feel like a little turtle climbing up a big hill. It sure is a long way to the top, but I keep going up, up and away. You do that too. Cheers, PAT

Hi, Nick! My prayers are with you. I'm a friend of your Aunt Arleen's. I, like her, have CFS. I am also an ovarian cancer survivor (1 year). I've had CFS since 1988, and there were months when I couldn't get out of bed. But since chemo, I've been doing really well. I will walk as much as I can for you every day...with CFS, every step we take is a blessings!

Your website is wonderful! You have so many people pulling for you and that love you.

You'll be fine, dear.

Lots of love and prayers,

This one is for Jeff. I can't run a marathon because I have CFS, but I have been trying to walk everyday. I started out at 10 minutes per day and have worked up to 20 minutes and sometimes if I split it up I can go 25. Does that count for a donation to the fund? For me (and all CFS patients)accomplishing this is like doing a marathon. Take care all of you. God's Blessings. Arleen

Dear Nick, Ali, Mike and Laura........I am thinking about all of you a lot today, it being Nick's last treatment. We have a lot to celebrate..his (and all of you) getting through the treatments and his remission from cancer. Sorry to hear it has taken a toll on his well being, but I'm sure that is to be expected. He has been such a fighter, I'm sure with the end of the radiation and some rest, he will pop right back again. So, Nick, you shaved your head. I'll bet you really look cool. We need a picture, Mike. NIck, well I did it! I finished my first marathon at the age of 47! I only trained for 4 1/2 months and at times asked myself "Are you crazy!!?" However, when I thought about people like you and Krissey (my honored patient) I quickly realized that if you could be strong and do so well with your therapy, surely I could "suck it in" and jog a few miles! When I hear how brave you are being, it really makes me feel humble. You are truly a light shining for the rest of us when we hit a problem in our everyday lives. In other words, you help us to not sweat the small stuff and in most of our lives it is almost always the small stuff that tries to bring us down. Please know that you will be added to my prayer list. Maybe someday I will fortunate enough to meet you in person. Take care and God bless, Teena

He was really hoping that he wouldn't loose it, but on the very day that it started falling out (and in big globs) he ordered his head shaved......so that's what I did. Although, thanks to a suggestion from one of his nurses, I could only shaved part of it, so that he could have a long dreamed for 'Mohawk' for awhile. He thought it was awesome. It didn't last long though because he got tired of falling hair getting into everything. He thought that his bald head felt really weird, but liked not having to wash and comb his hair. No Bed-Head either! I loved just rubbing his too cute, smoooooth little bald head and gave it kisses regularly. Enjoy the freedom. I'll just bet that you look way cool.

Hope that the rest of the radiation treatments go smoothly. You must be a real pro by now.

Hi Nick, my name is Julie and I finished the Disney Marathon. I ran in honor of Sarah Noble, who was at the race. I saw Sarah when I crossed the finish line, and she led the Conga line at the TNT Victory Party!

I am really lucky because, not only did I finish, but I made lots of new friends training for the marathon. The first half of the marathon went great. Then came the rain... Most of the way I ran with my friends, but around the 18th mile I took off on my own. My knee hurt and I wanted to be done.

After two miles alone I felt sick, my knee pain was worse and I missed my friends. Thankfully I was reuntied with my pal, Susan Eason, who ran in honor of you! Although Susan previously ran an entire marathon, she walked the 22nd mile with me because of my knee. Eventually, Susan and I jogged the rest of the way, had fun and met Minnie and Micky Mouse! When I finished, I called my two "big" boys (ages 5 and 2) and told them, "Mommy finished a marathon!" It was a blast, Nick!

Hi Nick & family,
Disney was my first attempt at a marathon and TNT was a great help & encouragement. During our training, I discovered that my 51 year old arthritic knees couldn't handle going from a couch potato to walking 26.2 miles in just a few months so I had to cut back and try for the 1/2 marathon with a brace on both knees.

As a native Californian, transplanted to Missouri 16 years ago, I was expecting to finally find out what Florida oranges tasted like. To my great surprise, at the carb-party the night before the race, with huge bowls of oranges and bananas on each table, ALL of the oranges were from California.......

The morning of the race, we arrived at Disney about 3:45 a.m. and had to WAIT until 6 a.m. for the race to start. We had to walk almost a mile before we even got to the starting line. I had never been in any kind of a race where there were over 18,000 participants..... It was very over-whelming, and exciting.... so exciting that when we finally started, even though I am a walker, I started jogging with all of the runners..... bad choice... shin pains were an almost immediate consequence, but, just when I realized that maybe I should slow down a little to get rid of the shin pain, my coach appeared at my side and starting walking with me for a little ways.... no way I could slow down my pace with my coach walking with me.... therefore, it took almost 2 miles before the shins stopped aching.

During training, I had walked 14 and 16 miles more than once so I KNEW that I could go the distance.... but, my best speed had been around 18 minutes per mile so I was VERY worried about the sweeper bus. At about 3 1/2 miles, I helped another walker pull off her sweat pants over her walking shoes (NOT an easy task), I almost knocked her over several times... but we started walking together after that. Then we picked up another walker about a mile later. We thought we were doing pretty well, about 17 minutes per mile. All of our coaches had told us to do the second half of the race faster than the first half. The first gal said that she planned on running after we reached the 10 mile spot.

However, just before we reached 8 1/2 miles, we started seeing walkers going off the track and getting on a bus..... Moments later, we were told that even though we still had an hour left, we had to leave the course.... we were told that Disney had determined that there was no way that we could finish our 1/2 marathon within the time limit so we had to stop.... It took 5 "volunteers" to "persuade" the 2 gals I'd been walking with, that we were NOT going to be allowed to finish.... MAJOR disappointment... even though within a few minutes afterwards, it began to downpour, in buckets, and we were all immediately drenched to the bone...

After checking back in at the TNT tents to let them know that I was not lost on the track somewhere (so the coach wouldn't have to go looking for me later), I went back to the resort, took a hot shower, bundled in warm pjs and took a nap.... A couple of hours later, the weather was fine again, so I swam a few laps in the pool.

I received so many calls of support from my team-mates that afternoon, I was over-whelmed. They all told me that even though Disney made me "quit", I was still a winner.... I'd walked more than 13.1 many times... 2 years ago, I spent 3 months in a wheelchair with both ankles broken and broken bones in both feet, now I was competing in marathon races. All of my team-mates assured me that I was indeed a winner, even if Disney didn't say so.....

When I went to the victory celebration that evening, my mentor and a couple other team-mates, presented me with a gold Donald Duck medal. I found out later, that when the sweeping started, some walkers were given medals, driven to the 12 mile marker and allowed to finish the last mile, cross the finish, and receive another medal.... so, I was able to also receive a medal for all my hard work and efforts. I can't tell you how much all the support and encouragement from my TNT team-mates has meant to my life. I'm actually looking forward to continue training (at a slower pace) until some day I can compete and COMPLETE a whole marathon.

Hi Nick, What an awesome experience it was to finish the Disney Marathon with the team in training program. I ran/walked the marathon in 6 hours 13 minutes and 40 seconds. We wore stickers of you on our shirts, so you were running with us the whole way. It was great running with all of my friends (and you in spirit) and knowing that we were doing it for you and others like you! There were times that I was very tired and then I thought about you and my friend Martha that also has Luekemia and I thought, "this is just one day, really a few hours that I have to feel tired. You guys feel this way a lot." That always gave me some energy. Here is the really exciting news!!! I got to meet Mickey and Minnie Mouse!!! I even was able to get a hug and a picture with them. It was really cool. They told me to tell you "hi" and they hope you get better really soon. Thanks for being my inspiration. I had a great time doing all of it. You are my hero!

Well, I don't think I can beat my husband Dave's great pizza story from the Walt Disney marathon :), but I wanted to add my story nevertheless.

I want to share two very meaningful moments from the trip and marathon. The first was the pasta party the night before the marathon--it was inspiring to hear the words of different speakers (a great runner, the marathon director, and a father with a sad story). The words of those speakers pulled together 4 months of training and fundraising and gave it meaning. The second moment is the marathon itself, seeing over 2,000 "purple people" running together for a cause, and the hundreds of spectators cheering us on! Nick, I hope that you feel the support of your "spectators" (family, friends, acquaintances) everyday. I will keep you in my prayers--stay strong!

Hey Nick,
What an awesome kid you are!!! I ran in my first marathon in Disney for TNT. It was a blast!! I never knew 26.2 miles could be so much fun. We did get rained on and the wind picked up, but that was ok. God gives us lots of challenges doesn't he? The best part of my marathon experience was that I ran in honor of 6 people, and that made it easier for me. When I looked down at my wrist I knew why I was running my marathon.
God Bless you are your family Nick. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Nick, my name is Curt. I did the Disney marathon too, It was a great experience that I will never forget. I did the marathon with the Mid America Iowa TNT, Made lots of friends, and met more in Florida. The people that actually made this possible for me to experience a marathon, is people like you Nick, I like to help people and this gave me the opportunity to raise money to hopefully someday have the cure out there. I also ran this for my wife who is currently 20 months into remission, and is my whole life. Nick, Disney was a magical place and people like you made it that way. Probably the best part of it was the friendships that I made while we were in training and in Florida. Good luck and stay strong!!

Hi Nick my name is Bobbi and I did the Disney marathon too as part of team in training( Mid- America Iowa.) Disney was a fun marathon to do and I did get my picture taken with Tigger( he is my favorite.)Doing a event like this gives you a great sense of pride in what you have accomplished. I met some nice people while doing this. I walked the half marathon and they are right they do like to take you off the course -- but you see I had my own fight to win too I had to finish as I am a survivor I am 20 months in remission from Hodgkin's Disease. There was no way the I was going to let them take me off the course! I also had great support from my other team members, they were great. My husband also did this and he had faith in me. I did finish and I finished it for my honor patient Marissa for you Nick, for me and everyone out there who has the misfortune to have this disease. We are all fighters Nick I have faith in you and I know that you are strong! I hope all is going o.k. for you and remember there are always someone out there praying for you and keep fighting because life is worth it!
Stay strong

Hi Nick, My name is Ericka Pulllen and I just got back from Disney World and ran in the marathon. It was a wonderful and powerful experience. The coolest part was running through Magic Kingdom and seeing the Disney characters (I received a kiss from Daisy Duck). Who is your favorite Disney character? I love them all, but I must say that Minnie Mouse is my favorite. My thoughts are with you and take care.

Hi Nick,

I am the coach of the Waterloo Iowa TNT group. People like you, with your fighting spirit and inspirational stories have kept me going to coach for seven marathons so far. I ran the Disney marathon with seven Team members, including my wife Tamara. I have a funny story I think will make you laugh.

As you know already, the weather got kinda bad on us. To start I have trouble in humid weather because I sweat more than any human alive, and humid weather means I cannot finish a marathon without very, very bad cramps in my legs. I have had to go to a medical tent after crossing the finish line in three of my marathons due to dehydration. Anyway, I knew I was in trouble around mile 15 even though I was on pace to run my all time best (3:50) as I started to cramp. I slowed down a bit and just wanted to run under four hours; well serious rain and wind took care of that idea. Since I was in Disney World I figured I would take it easy the last 5 miles and look around as I ran through the parks instead of taking the race so seriously. Well, about mile 21 I was really hungry. So hungry that I decided at mile 23, in the MGM park, to leave the course and get a pizza. That's right, I got in line and ordered a whole small pizza (pepperoni), jumped back in the race and walked while eating my pizza.

Needless to say everyone, runners and spectators alike thought that was aweful funny. I had more fun with people cheering for me while eating the pizza than I did while running. Another guy who was having leg problems like me decided to walk and talk with me from mile 24 all the way to mile 26, where I stopped in the rain and wished my companion the best, and began to cheer ever single runner that passed me until over one hour later when my wife and a great friend of mine who was also a TNT member came along. I then stiffly got going again and finished the race with those two, holding hands as we crossed for the cameras.

Many people wonder why I chose to "give up" on my goal instead of trying to do my best after four months of training. I tell them I did not give up, I found a new (and more fun) way to overcome pain and still accomplish my mission without giving up when I really wanted to for a mile or two. I bet you know all about that...

I wish you my very best and God's belssings during your treatment. Stay strong and find ways to have fun and be thankful for what you do have, your an inspiration to us all!

Hi Nick. I was a member of TNT Mid-America-Iowa group that went to Disney World for the Marathon. Even though it was billed as the 100 Magic Moments of Disney, the real magic moments came from hearing of people like you, being with others who raised money for the "cause", and sharing with others at the airports, on the flights, and at Disney World what we had accomplised and why. The real "heroes" in all of this are the honored patients.

Hello! I just wanted to report how well TNT did at the Disney Marathon. We took 49 people from the Kansas City area. They raised over $200,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! Nation wide TNT raised 8.8 million dollars! Go TNT! They were able to do it because of sweet little boys like you keeping them going. Hey Serum family!
Disney was a blast and very exhausting! We are planning a reunion party on January 27th and maybe you could come. We are all going to share our photos. Now for my story,

We arrived in Orlando in the late afternoon. When we arrived at the resort there were a ton of TNT people from all over the nation. We pretty much checked in and then went to get something to eat because we were all very hungry. After we ate it was off to bed because we had an early morning meeting that we all had to be at.

Day2 (one more day until the race)

We got up early and went to the meeting. At this meeting we got final instructions on when we needed to be up to catch the bus, and more detailed information about the race. Many of us were worried about the time limit! ecspecially us first time marathoners. They said we had to keep a pace of 16 minute miles or we would be sweeped off the course by a "sweeper Bus" Not the thing to tell us first timers. All day we worried about the sweeper bus getting us. We even tried to think of ways on how we could get away if the bus got near us.

After the meeting we took a bus to the Disny Sports complex to pick up our race packets and to walk the expo. We took pictures of us in front of the time clock that was ticking away the hours and minutes until the race. We also bought all our race souvenirs. This took most the day so after we finished we went back to the resort to rest because we had to catch buses at 3:30 p.m. to got to the pasta party.

The pasta party was incredible! Lot's of people and lots of food. Many people spoke and gave pep talks. One father got up and told his story about his daughter Kim and her fight with Luekemia. He showed pictures of her from a baby to age 21. There were pictures of her and her brother and other friends and family. By the time he finished there was not a dry eye in the place.

The best news is that TNT raised more than 8.8 MILLION dollars for the society. There were approximately 2,500 TNT runners/walkers participating in the marathon.

After the dinner we went home and went straight to bed. After all, the big day was just hours away. We didn't sleep well I think many of us had dreams about things going wrong at the race.

Day 3 THE BIG RACE!!!!!

Yes, it is true, we got up a 2 a.m. that is 1:00a.m. Kansas City time. Buses took us to the Epcot parking lot near the starting line. It was amazing seeing over 18,000 people standing around waiting to do this race. It was cold and dark. They finally took us to the starting line where they had us split up into different "corrals" Marathoners went first then 1/2 marathoners lined up. Just before 6:00am the start of the race, fireworks went off and Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck came done the road and gave all of us a pep talk and started the race.

THE RACE!!

Things started off very well for me. It was dark for quite awhile but soon it started to get light out and it definitley warmed up. We ran through Epcot when it was dark and they had it all lit up and music going. It was very cool!

About the 5 mile mark I was pretty confident I was going to beat the sweeper bus and began really enjoying myself. The spectators were great! People I didn't even know where cheering me on. They called all of us TNT people the "Purple People" because we all had purple shirts on. It was exciting to hear people shout "Way to go purple people we love you!" I swear I cried every time someone cheered for me! It was so emotional!

Around the 7 mile mark I had to go to the bathroom so bad and all the porta-potties had huge lines. I didn't want to stop because I was still worried that it would make me fall far behind! So yes, I did what many other people did and found a bush! After that I felt so much better! My running picked up!

As I headed towards Disney world the characters starting comming out! I took a picture with snow white and grummpy. As I headed into Walt-disney world the real excitment began! There were people cheering every where! As we turned the corner and headed down disney main street you could see magic kingdom! This was so cool. I took pictures again As we ran through disney world, there was very up beat music and characters everywhere! I took pictures with Pluto, twiddle dee and twiddle dum, Buz Light year and chip and dale and many more. The only ones I missed were Mickey and Minnie. The line was to long and time was important! I took pictures at every mile marker starting at the 9 mile marker!

After Disney world things got rough but all the other runners were great, Many would run beside me and give me encouragement and just talk to me.

Every runner had a story on why they were doing this race. Many were doing it honor or memory of friends or family members who were batteling leukemia or had battled this disease, some runners were survivors themselves. I met many new friends along the way! I told everyone my story and all about you Nick! They all wish you the best durring your chemo treatments. Many of the runners understood what you were about to go through. People from Florida, Washington, Colorado and many other places all wish the best for you!

The Home Strech

As I approached the finish line I can't begin to tell you the emotions I felt! People cheering and screaming "You DID IT!" It was so unreal. I stopped right before the finish line and took a picture of the spectators and the finish line and then I crossed it.

As soon as I crossed they gave me my medal and I just cried. This was definitley the best thing I have ever done in my life. I never saw the sweeper bus!!!

After the race I went back to find my friends to cheer them on to the end! Every time someone I knew crossed the line I cried! When I new all my friends had made it I went back to the resort showered and took a big nap!

In the evening we all went to a "Victory" party. We celebrated evryones accomplishments. Many honor patients and their families came to the victory party. Maybe we will see you there next year! After the party we went home and slept! We left early in the morning to make it back to KC.

Well this is my story Im sorry to take up so much room!
Nick, I couldn't have done this if it wasn't for you and your family. You have all given us the strength we needed to do this!

In fact , watch out Portland Marathon because the purple people from KC are thinking about comming your way!! And we are going to do it for you Nick!!!

My challenge for everyone who reads this from age 15 to 100 is to get involved in TNT! If you think you can't do this you are wrong! You can do this!! I am living proof! Now, go out and have fun and help fight and find a cure for Luekemia!!!

We have something special just for you Nick. We hope to get to you real soon! So, be looking for it.

Hey Jeff, Isn't my story worth at least $100? Maybe we could work out a deal, You give my story $100 and I will see about getting you extra beer at Freddy T's!!

Take care Serum Family and Thank You!!

Well, Nick, I did it!! I ran my very fist marathon at Disney World and it was all for you! So, I thought that I should let you and your family know all about it!

On Sunday morning, we were up at 2 am. No that is NOT a typo! We got ready, went and had some breakfast, and then it was off to the staging area. It was rather cold that morning, so we were all layered up before the race started. Finally at about 5:15 am, we were led to the starting line. The KC TNT team stood around, stretched a little, took a few pictures and then all of a sudden it was time to start, so off we went! It was great. There were tons of people standing on the sides of the road to cheer us on and keep us going the whole way. The marathon route took us through all 4 Disney parks, starting and ending at Epcot Center. There was music along the way in several places and several of the disney characters were out that morning to cheer us on. At mile 10 we were feeling really good and stopped to take a picture in front of Cinderella's castle, and then we were off again. We reached the half marathon point and saw the crowds cheering for the finishers, but we kept on going. Things were going great until mile 15, when the rain started. And I mean it poured! We ran through the monsoon for four miles when it finally let up. And still, looking like wet rats, we pressed on. We finally reached mile 22, and the final countdown to the finish begun. With each mile marker that we ran past, we felt better and better. When we reached 24 miles, we knew we were going to make it!!! So, we kept on trucking, and before we knew it, there was mile 25. We slowed to a walk for a little bit, stopped to stretch our legs, and we were off again. Wanted to make sure that we were looking good for the finish line. The next thing we knew there was mile 26 and we only had .2 miles to go! We rounded the corner and saw the finish line up ahead. Suddenly the adrenaline kicked in and we were able to pick up the pace and finish strong. And as soon as we crossed that finish line and got our medal, that's when the tears started! I had finally done it!

So that's my story. Thank you so much, Nick. You can't even understand how much of an inspiration you were to me, and still are. Any time things were getting tough and I thought that I couldn't make it, I just thought of you or looked at your picture that I had pinned to my shirt. Everything that you are going through is so much more difficult than a marathon! Because of you, I knew that I could finish that marathon.

Keep your head up! You too, are going to be successful in your own "marathon"!!!

month of January. We'll go to Mass everyday and offer
it up for Nick. How do you find all of those nice

I hope that Nick's counts are up on New Years Eve.....might as well have the year go out on a positive note. All of the preparations for radiation can be a little tedious, so I hope that Nick can hang in there.....maybe they will make him an extra mask to take home. They are so cool!

Our experiences with the radiation therapy were very good. Hopefully Nick will feel great throughout. Then, you just have to wait till the end to see if it worked. Our thoughts and prayers are with you for a successful outcome.

May the New Year Year bring you all much happiness, and most of all....health.

Hello Serums! Thanks so much for coming to DaVinci's on the 14th. I am so glad that were were finally able to meet one another.

I hope all is well with you. Congratulations on this latest milestone, Nick!

Fundraising is going well. I have about $300 left to raise. I'm confident that I'll make it.

The running was going real well, but I had an emergency appendectomy on Thanksgiving. It was my first stay in a hospital and I now understand just how awful it is to be poked and prodded at all hours. I was only in the hospital for about 36 hours, but I was ready to get out. I also realized, Nick, that you have a lot of guts, patience and strength to go through all of your treatments and put up with all of that other "hospital stuff" on an ongoing basis.

As for my running in the Disney marathon, the surgeon doesn't think I'll probably recover in time, but I am determined to prove him wrong. I've slowly started working out again (mostly walking) and think I'll be up and running in time for Disney. After all, I've been inspired by a boy who has gone through much more than I ever have and is thriving!

Thanks, Nick, for providing inspiration to us all.

So glad to hear about the "victory" of this milestone you have reached, what a thing to celebrate! Things have been crazy! Gretchen and I have been training and we are getting anxious about the marathon.

We both reached our goal along time ago but have been busy trying to help our other teammates reach their goal. We helped 2 team members with a fundraiser they had at "All Fired Up" it was a blast and they raised quite a bit of money.

Heather and Scott had to drop out because Scott got a new job and is traveling a ton and Heather is pregnant and is having a lot of morning sickness. They will both try again next year to do this.

Ali, I laughed when I read about your slumber party, I love slumber parties it brought back memories for me! If you ever need any tips(or should I say tricks to play on others) let me know. I would be glad to share! I also have tips for you Nick just in case Ali ever has a slumber party at your house. I have 2 older brothers who played a lot of tricks on me and my friends at my slumber parties.

Take care Serum family and have a great Holiday Season! We will be thinking of all of you when we are at Walt Disney World for the Marathon! Thanks for being our inspiration, all of you!!

Hi Serum family!
Sorry I haven't responded sooner but right after the auction I had to go out of town. I am so glad Nick made his counts and I hope he is doing well. He is one tuff little guy. Mike and Laura Thank You so much for coming to the auction. Having you there meant a lot to our team!

Im sure Debbie (who is absolutley wonderful!) has told you about our Oktober feast this Sunday the 7th. It will be at Freddy T's in Stanley and is located at 151st and 69 highway. We will have lots and lots of food and we have a ton of door prizes to give away. I plan on playing some fun games such as 1 hit wonder. I will sing a 1 hit wonder and the first person to guess the title and artist will win a door prize. If they guess wrong, they will be encouraged to make a small donation or they can just pay me to shut up since I can't sing! We will also have some other fun games for door prizes.

I hope that Nick is feeling well enough to come. We will keep praying for him in hopes of a speedy recovery! Stay strong Serum family and we hope to see you Sunday! Deanna, Gretchen, Scott and Heather TNT team members (:

You can count on us for a special prayer for Nick and for you and Laura and Ali too. I pray that Nick gets through his treatment without any problems.

Doing a bit of recuperating myself today. Brad and Greg were home for the weekend, as well as Paula and her family and Marie. We celebrated a four sibling birthday party and had a great time. It so wonderful to have most of the family together. We were missing Aliya and Jainal and wish there could have been here too. The boys had no flight problems and we are greatful for that too.

Our thoughts and prayers for Nick and all of you. Take care. Arleen and Harry

We know Nick has another hospital stay this Thurs and hope it goes well. Nick seems to adjust for these stays and I know it is hard on Laura but she is a real special person and wants to do everything possible for Nick. I know these hospital stays are hard on the whole family and Nick has a special family who is helping him get better which we are all praying it will. I know there is another fundraiser this weekend for all the runners and we want to thank them for all they are doing. They are all special people to put this time and efforts into this and making Nick special to them. We want to also thank all the people who donated all the great things for the event. Nicks aunt Debbie has also done quite abit for the runners getting donations and I know she is doing this as she loves Nick and wants to help make him better by helping to raise money for more research in this alful cancer. Hi! Sorry I did not get back sooner but had some medical problems too. The Bluegrass festival was great but got home and had some problems. Had my cancer flair up. I have been fitting it for 28 years. I know I will make it for I am not ready to leave here yet, but sometimes it gets really hard. But with faith I have made it this long and will for many years. Nick if I can do it I know you can too. You are very strong and have a lot to live for and you will do it the same as I have. When they found my cancer they gave me 6 months to live and here I am still working 28 years later and fighting it, but I am here and so will you. Prayer and believe will help and the love of your family and I know you have that. I had to add an extra prayer for myself for the past few days but yours came first for you still have most of your life to live and mine has been here a long time but I am not ready to give up yet. Glad Every thing is going good. I know you will make the rest in flying colors. I wish I know what your color is Nick, I would send you a little gift in that color, but I think your color is Prayer right now,and I do that each night and sometimes more when I feel some extra prayers are needed. Hang in there, You have a lot of people behind you and we are all praying for you and your family.Good luck! Judy

Hope that you all will have a nice Labor Day weekend. It's nice that Nick will be able to spend it at home with his family. Holidays in the hospital aren't much fun. That said, we're sending lots of positive vibes Nick's way so that his counts come up quickly and he can get back to his job of killing off cancer cells.

Enjoy your weekend.

Hello to Nick and the rest of the Serum family! Add one more to the TNT group running in Nick's honor at the Disney marathon. I hope that we'll be able to meet you soon, Nick. I've read all of your journal entries; you are one tough kid! If everything has gone according to plan, you entered the hospital today. I hope that this round of methotrexate treatment goes better for you than it has in the past.

I've enjoyed both the pictures and the artwork you've posted on the website-- Ali, I can only dream of having artistic talent like yours!

Take care, Serum family, and know that you are in the thoughts of many.

I am very excited to say that a friend and I have joined "team in training" and Nick is our honored patient. We have never done anything like this before and we were both not real sure if we wanted to do this. We have both done 5ks before but let's just say it took awhile. As soon as we learned more about Nick we both knew that we had to do this. For not knowing Nick very well, he has really inspired and motivated us to do this. Thank You! Nick! Both Gretchen and I live in Olathe and look forward to possibly meeting Nick. We have even began our fundraising efforts and look forward to trying all kinds of different strategies to raise the money. Though we have only started this yesterday, we both agree this has been a great experience! Sincerly, Deanna Peterson

Dear Laura, Mike, Nick and Ali,

It's great to hear that Nick's counts are back up and he is ready for another go around. How about you Laura...are you up to it? Hope you are able to get some rest while at the hospital.

I just went back through all your postings and the guestbook. I knew I had missed some of them and wanted to keep up on what is going on with all of you. As I read through them, it took me back to those stressful days during the nine months that Shawn was hospitalized. Some times I wonder if God gives us these tragedies to deal with in order to strenghten us.... because it certainly does. We always think it can't happen to us and then we find ourselves in the middle of it with our lives totally changed and turned up side down. But God gives us the strength and perseverance to deal with it. And, you guys seem to be doing a great job of it. It's so good that you have been able to continue with Ali's activities, so her life can go on in a normal fashion. Keep up the good work. Our prayers for all of you. Arleen and Harry

From our experience, the super low ANC counts following chemo (especially ARA-C) are normal. Just be patient and wait for Nick's system to recover in a clean environment. Keep in mind that the cancer cells are being knocked out as well.....and that's the goal. From our experience, transfusions were very common when counts were low, and are nothing to be alarmed about. Your challenge will be keeping Nick's spirits up while he waits to be strong enough to go home. He's going to be just fine.....it may just take a little longer than you would like.

Just stopping by to say Hi and so glad to hear that Nick's counts were back up and he was able to complete the treatment. Sounds like a real trooper. Laura, we are thinking to you too, spending those long days and nights at the hospital. It has got to be very exhausing. Keep up the good work, all of you. The song is so beautiful. It really tells the story. Our thoughts and prayers for all of you. Arleen and Harry

Our Grandson's name is Nicolas and we all call him Nick.
He was dx on Friday, Oct. 13th 2000 and was in protocol CCG1991 after maintenance, he has started a 2nd DI but is not doing as well as he did in his 1st DI. He was 2 1/2 years old at dx and turned 3 on 4/09/01. We are told he has a little more than 2 1/2 years of treatment to look forward to with about 80-85% success rate.

My name is Amy Lake, I know Jeff & Karen. The company I work for manages the rental in their condos here at the Lake. My younger sister was diagnosed with AML about 10 years ago when she was 8. She was at Children's Mercy (my mother knows Dr.Woods). The doctors had only given my sister 5 days to live when she was diagnosed. I would like to take this time to give you more hope. I was a perfect match for a bone marrow transplant. The transplant was completed on June 27, 1991. My sister just turned 19 in April. My mother and sister still live in KC. Please call me at 800-704-6962, I would be happy to give you my mom's phone numbers. We will keep you in our prayers. You are in good hands and Children's Mercy Hospital! NEVER GIVE UP HOPE!

hat a wonderful web site --even tho we check on Nick progress i think this is great--It will be neat for Nick to have these journal and words from everyone who are thinking of him when he is like our age. We have seen you all in good days and bad days and we will be there for you always.
We are only going to think of good-days in future. We pray every day for all of you and i think God is just testing everyone but feel he is listening and will help you all.
The song really fits both of you as Laura has many times just stood and looked at Nick and right from day one you have said "WHY CAN'T IT BE ME". Hopefully Nicks count will be up Thurs so he can stop the awful shots he hates. We love you all.

we just got home from the lake, home for 7 days then back down for a week, hope you can return during that week. WE were thrilled to have everyone make it to the lake, and at many times were overwhelmed with excitement at the joy and happiness that we saw in the eye's of nick thru-out the whole weekend, playing with his older cousin's }as he called them} and younger cousin. Having nick behind the steering wheel of the boat was the greatest, and plan on having him behind the wheel every year, and will be the only time that I allow the boat to be airborne, as I will need nick's help to control the boat and have someone to help yell {get AIRBORNE} great site look forward to photo's and update's. Hope you all can come to the lake in 2 week's. Everyone in the Serum family of Riverside is doing great and the kid's are growing like crazy. Take care
