I am so thrilled to be able to see your page again. Before when I was checking on it, it said I needed a pass word. I had been following her for years and I was sad not to be able to see how she was doing. She looks great. I think the video is a great idea. Our kids can do so much more than they get credit for. I hate that day at Dr.E. I am glad she is about to start school. I know she will love it. Love, Anne

This is such a great update. I am always wondering how you are all doing! It is great to have the powerchair and to have the freedom to go wherever you want! Awesome!! Gina drives hers on the bus and all around school. She is so happy to be in it.
Michaela looks terrific! I am so glad to hear that she is doing well and progressing. Keep up the great work and the great updates on the website!

Love the new pictures...what a cutie pie! I would love to see her move around in her new chair, I bet she thinks she is it now with being able to move all around herself, that is so great! She looks so good and I can not believe she is already 5 1/2, I tell you time just flies right by. Make sure to let me know when you all are coming to Durham, can't wait to see you, although hopefully we will see you in July at the symposium.

Oh no! That darn girl, how dare her blood sugar go that low! Sorry you had such a scare and that her meds are keeping the whole house up at night! Sounds like fun :-) Maybe that's a good sign that some meds need to go. I hope this gets corrected and thanks for keeping us updated. What a bootiful (ha ha) princess she made.

You will all continue to be in our prayers.

Micki, I love the daisy picture, you are such a cutie pie! However, the picture of you and Pie just brought tears to my eyes...it was such a powerful photo. As a Krabbe mom, I could clearly see the signs of this horrible disease, but what surpassed them was the tremendous connection that I could see between Micki and Pie. Simply beautiful! We felt so honored to get to meet Micki and Keely during their visit, and hope to see them at the next symposium in May. We continue to keep you all in our prayers. God bless,

Sending our love to you and the precious children! Thanks for updating - looking forward to hear news from Duke. I think getting hand splints is a great idea for Micki. I have also seen a sort of glove that some of the children at Laura's therapy wear. They seem to tolerate it well and can still play - it may be something for day use. I'm sure Dr. Escolar will have ideas as well.
Glad to hear Micki is as fiesty as ever!!

Hi,
I just read about Michaela's aversion to the tactile/sensory toys. I don't know if this will help, but Jeremy (2½ - transplanted at 28 days) had some sensitivity issues for a while - and still has some. Have her occupational and/or physical therapist check this out. Jeremy did NOT like grass for a while and still doesn't like to be covered with a blanket (even while sleeping).

It was great to see you at the symposium!

Hi guys!! It was so good to see you all this weekend. It's very rare that we have the privelage of having our guardian Angel Kelly in the blistery state of Maine. What a joy it was to be with everyone. I so enjoyed seeing the kids. I'm in awe of Miss Michaela and her big cheeks. I laughed tonight when I thought of Ron roaring at Michaela and how she almost jumped right out of her carseat! That was so funny. The looks she kept giving him where priceless. And also of Michael and how alert and smart he is. Those kisses he gave Michaela were precious. I'll never forget that and also how much he liked me this time around!! I just have the touch I guess:) I love the new pictures of Micki, what a ham!! Thanks again for having us and keep in touch. When the weather is warmer, Ron and I will have to make the whole trip to your house and spend the night with you guys, if you'll have us that is. Well anyway. Take care. We are sending kisses your way.

Keep working on that trunk control and don't get discouraged with the slow progress of healing. It will come!

Hi there, just a little hello, I met your family last year at duke right before they went home!
I know about the freezing weather, here in Philly it feels like a frozen artic place! I think it is going to be about 16 degrees tomorrow and windy, BRRRRR
Well, anyway, just wanted to let you know that I check on the kids often and I am so happy to hear that Micki is getting so big and strong, Austin (my son) is now almost 2 yrs out and life is back to normal, he will starting normal school in september (something 2 yrs ago I thought would never be possible!) Its hard getting used to the fact that he is a normal kid now but it is an amazing feeling!
Hope their next visit to duke brings great results and I hope that she wows them with her skills!!!
Tell everyone we said hello and hugs to Micki and Pie!
Also please tell Keely that Susie from Mississippi (Eric's aunt) says hello, we went out there for Eric's funeral in November and she kept asking how she was!
good luck with the trip and the cold weather!!!
wishes for good luck and most of all, we are always praying for a cure for all of these horrible diseases that affect our kids!

Please forgive me if you feel this is inappropriate, but the email got returned. My friend Amie & I are trying to raise awareness for more kids' sites and get more support and prayers going. I am a CaringBridge mom, if you don’t know me, my son’s site is at: http://www.caringbridge.org/page/gooch

All we ask is people “adopt” one kid and promise to visit their sites weekly to add messages and let them know people care. Your site has been either recommended by someone who knows you, or seen as a link on another child’s page. We are asking your permission to include your child. We also include the sites of beautiful children who have passed on, because we feel those families need the most support. Many of the “adopters” have lost a child. If you want to read all about this, please go to either my son's site or the Adotp a Kid site. We are NOT a part of CaringBridge at all, it just so happens the bulk of the kids sites are ON CaringBridge. Many of us are in the same situation of having our lives turned upside down.

Just let us know if you want your child REMOVED, otherwise you don’t need to do anything else but enjoy some new messages here and there. Soon you will be getting guestbook messages from someone who has "adopted" your site (if you don’t want to participate just let us know and we will understand). We know the encouragement from others is important, and even if you don’t feel you need it, someone else may be visiting your site and drawing strength from you. We will be praying for you.

I missed your first birthday, but only because I was out of town. So please accept by late birthday wishes. I remember when we were awaiting your arrival and you came on such a special day. The feast day of St. Nicholas!! How exciting. Now you are a year old and almost a year out of transplant. It is hard to believe, one year out of transplant. You will get to celebrate another birthday, your second life birthday in just a few weeks!! We love you sweet Michaela. Wish you were going to Duke when we go (first week of February). Would love to see you and mommy!!!! I hope you have a wonderful CHristmas. Kiss that brother of yours from Gina. She just loves him!!!

Hi guys, I'm so happy that Michaela is doing so well, that was really good news to hear. Is she finally getting any bigger? She's such a peanut!!! I cannot believe that they have to go back to North Carolina already, it seems like they just left there!! Probably does considering your not really at "home" yet anyway Keely. Well we love you all and think of you often, hopefully we'll be able to get together soon with the kids. Give big kisses to them from all of us. Take care and keep us posted.

Hello everyone. SO glad to hear that Micki is doing so well. She sure is a cutie. I agree, that you should be able to take her home. We continue to pray for that on a regular basis. Kids do better in their own environment, and Micki and Michael I am sure will be glad when they finally get there. We also had some difficulties in our journey home, but not quite as extreme. Sometimes your the one who knows your family best. Hope all works out, and they can come home later this week. Thanks for updating us. Lots of Hugs, Jen

Hello Calaman and Ritchie Families,

Your update was nice and certainly it is good to hear Michaela is improving day by day. In Dr. K's behalf she is going to have Michaela's best interest at hand. Michaela is not even six months out of transplant and that first year is incredibly fragile. There can be many setbacks and I know that Dr. K wants to give Michaela the best odds at doing well and not having anything happen to her. She is an expert in her field. Other doctors may know transplant medicine, but with Krabbe children, the circumstances can be very different. I know how much you want your family to be home and all together. That time will come and you will look back at these days and know they were all worth it because you will have done such great work in saving sweet baby Michaela. I know that it is a sacrifice to not have your family now, but soon and when the timing is right they will all be home. Hugs to all and I am always thinking of you and your families! I pray for Michaela all of the time. She has so much healing to do from the transplant---that can take up to two years. I pray for a speedy recovery and that all goes well.

Great news about Michaela's release from the hospital. Hopefully the more meds she gets off, the more her appetite will come back. EAT MICKI EAT!!! It has been a long, rough haul, which is what happens this first year of transplant, but the benefits are so rewarding in the long run. Just wait a few more months and see how wonderful Micki is and how she is freed from this horrible disease. It is truly a miracle and you will be rejoicing. I am so glad that she has a port a cath, no more cleaning and flushing the lines every day. Gina had hers put in at a year old and still has it. Once a month the nurse comes to the house and flushes it out. No big deal! Gina keeps it just for back up, it is wonderul! We will keep saying our chant, for Micki to eat and Gain. She will soon. Gina didn't want to eat much either, she still doesn't eat well. Kiss the girls and telll Keely we are thinking of her and her family every single day! Thanks Julie for keeping us informed, you are doing a great job!

Hello Everyone!

We have been truly blessed by each and everyone of your journal entries. Families need to know the frustration that goes along with transplant. If you can't vent to your family (krabbe family) then who can you vent to. So many people are under the impression that this is easy, and its not. We know that you have those babies best interest at heart, and noone loves them as much as you do. We are glad you are going home, or almost home, and look forward to seeing updates again soon.

Both Michael and Michaela are truly blessed to have family to love and support them the way you do.

We will be praying extra hard during your trip. Please be careful, and enjoy your family being back together again.

Love, Jenn

My dearest Julie,
I am so sorry that you are going through a difficult time. It is understandable that you cannot continue the journal right now. I really appreciate that you have kept one because you have really given insight to those of us who have no clue to what transplant life is like. I have the greatest admiration for the families who are going through this and my heart is heavy just thinking about the sacrifices that have been made. I know that your situation is different because there are two precious and wonderful children, each with their own special needs. I am here for you if you need anything.I pray that God will give you the strength you need during this trying time. Please take care.
With all our love Grace, Anthony and Angel Anthony.

Dear Family,

I want to write and tell you that I feel your frustration. However, after being out of transplant for two years and seeing other kids, you have to understand that you are not out of the woods yet. These doctors are remaining cautiosly guarded with Michaela. Yes, you have been to hell and back, but it could get worse during the rest of her first year out of transplant. I can honestly say, that it is worse on the family than the babies right now and being at Duke is the best place for Michaela. I know that Michael hasn't recieved everything that he was supposed to get, and I don't understand why. Please be patient, you will continue to be tired and mentally exhausted for many months to come. This is not easy, but you are saving a life here and God said that doing His work was not going to be easy. I know how bad you want to go home, I felt the same way. I cried often and thought that it would never happen. We were told GIna could go home at 100 days, but other issues cropped up and we stayed another six weeks. It happens, transplant life is not predictable. Be patient, get rest, try not to be too frustrated. There aren't many doctors in this world who could do what they have done for Michaela, it is nothing short of a medical miracle.

I can imagine how frustrated you must be!!! Duke is such a BIG place - so much research, etc. But I think you are doing the right think by not backing down. Be honest with those doctors or go over their heads to the department heads. I found that if I persevered, I got the answers I wanted and if I complained enough, we got different doctors and nurses for our Laura. It is GREAT that you have a good relationship with the doctors back home. You will be relying on them much in the months to come.
I can't say how happy I am that all is going so well for Micheala. Please give her a kiss (and Pie too) for me.
my prayers are with you for a quick release home!!

HEy li'l micki chickie

Boy you sure are a little cutie pie! I hear you are having trouble gaining weight, well I know you'll keep working on it and it will come. One thing's for sure with all this transplant stuff, everything seems to go slowly and take time. You look so-o beautiful in all your pictures. I hope you will be getting busy putting on some lbs soon. Your body will keep getting stronger and that will help with the growing, you keep up the good work and it will all come together. I can only imagine how difficult everything can be when you are working so hard to recover from all the processes you have been through, but I know with all the love and hugs from all your family and friends that it will come. You keep up your good work and tell that sweetie "PIE" brother of yours that I say hi and blow him some kisses for me okay? Thanks!

Love ya li'l hunny bunny,

Before they know it they will be on their way home and forget most of the times down there. I know we are sometimes so busy that it doesn't seem like much now, and it was definately worth it all... BUT there's no place like home. Our thoughts are with all of you. Hope the visit goes well while you are down there Julie.

I am really glad to hear things are "settling down" for Michaela. I am praying things will go smoothly as the doctors work out all the little hitches that come with the transplant. Laura had many and it seemed as if one would get resolved and another one would show up!!! It really will end though and they will all get resolved and the meds will be gone and you will actually be able to almost forget the whole thing (of course, I can only say this because Laura is over 2 1/2 years out!!!!)!!! It is really hard in the beginning but you all are doing such a great job - Michaela looks so cute!!! Thank you for sharing her journey with us - I pray for her often. Please don't ever hesitate to call or email if anyone ever needs to talk or vent. Take each day at a time - tomorrow has enough worries of its own. Treasure each precious moment with your two babies. And take time for yourselves - I know how hard that can be - but you will be able to better care for the little ones if you do. Well, I've certainly rambled on long enough! I just wanted you to know I am thinking of your family and praying for Micheal and Michaela.

Hello to my old neighbors,
Glad to hear things are going normal?!? What is normal to them is not normal to most but we know it's ok. I have been checking in on you all through Mom but now you know I have my own access. Thank Goodness!
I remember Leandra and I sitting up many nights in the glider rocking at times I would fall asleep and the nurses would come in and wake me to put her in bed when she finally fell asleep. I think it is "normal" for them to get their days and nights confused in the hospital.
You are so lucky to have your Mom down there. I know that must help alot. Well I sit and look at these pictures of Pie and I really do miss him also.
I enjoyed getting to know all of you and I really miss that Rotisserre chicken, how about that Keely. Ha,ha.
Life at home is going well for us. Leandra surprises us all the time. She is getting much stronger and it is so hard to believe she is almost a year old.
I am always thinking about all of you and if I can help in any way Please.... let me know. Otherwise we will just keep praying and thinking of you all often.
Love and God Bless,

Hello again!

Just saw the great pictures of the family! Everyone looks so terrific!!!!!!! Pie's eyes are so wide open and he is very alert. He looks really good! Where did Micki get all that hair???????????? WOW, there is a lot of it! Gina slept through her transplant, too. Kind of anitclimatic after all the chemo. I am really praying that she does okay over the next several weeks. IT IS time to start chanting GROW CELLS GROW!!!!!!!!!! Keely and Kris-you guys are doing a great job. I am counting the days until we are there with you, only 23 to go!!! I'm counting those days for your mom and grandma, too. It will be a great reunion. Well keep up the smiles! They are good to see. The little Micki and Pie are adorable brother and sister.

Hi Keely, Chris, Michaela and Michael,

This is so rough starting all the transplant stuff. Hang in there kiddos. The doctors and nurses will do all they can to help you out and keep Michaela comfortable. At least if she is done with the one drug she can move to another one and we will pray that that one doesn't make her so sick. Poor thing. We are keeping you close in our prayers and I'm emailing your mom and keeping her spirits up. I hope that you know how much you are thought about and prayed for each day of my life. This is the rough time. Just take lots of deep breaths and know that many people are sending you lots and lots of hugs.

Hi Julie,

I just got home from out of town and read that Micki is still waiting. I hope that she reached her desired number of 2 for bilirubin today! I can only imagine how hard everythingmust be, being so far away from the gang and then having Micki's start date postponed a couple of times, my heart is with you sweetie, just keep hanging in there. What do they say about the bilirubin #, what is it that keeps them from going forward? I wish I knew more...... WE are continuing to say prayers for all of you, most especially Micki and Pie. HOpefully all has turned around by now and is going more smoothly. We will look forward to your next update, and by the way, thanks for always doing such a great job with your two journals.

Much Love and BIG HUGS,
Micki

OH MY GOODNESS! Micki just called me and said, I have to read Michaela's update to you right now. We both cried! I love the cute nickname for her and how attached Micki feels to this truly special baby. Great news that two central lines were placed! I heard Dr. K is on the unit for three weeks! So just in time for baby "Micki" to make her grand entrance. I'm glad that you are getting this special time with the kids, grandkids, etc. We will keep checking up on you guys. I am updating Gina's site tomorrow with pictures, (the ones you already have) and then we will be out of touch until the 26th. Much Christmas happiness to all of you and enjoy this very very blessed time together! We love you guys so much!!!!

WOW! This is for my new friend Michaela, or Micki for short! How I cried such little tears today when I read this entry, such sweet thoughts you shared for Micheala's new nickname and then to say that you were also thinking of me. Thank you for this wonderful Christmas Present! So just before I came to this site, I was at Michael's site and read that Michael worked really hard and smiled a BIG BOY smile on the outside for all to see and now I read that my girlfriend's new nickname is the same as mine. Whoosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope your days continue to be blessed, especially during this season of miracles, hope and joy!!!!!! So, Michaela, little more than a month to go til we meet, needless to say I can hardly wait!!!!!! You are already in my heart to stay, but now that you have such a wonderful new nickname, you're so totally stuck with me, watch out cutie-pie!!!!!!! Love to you all, keep sharing and staying so strong together and you will all get through this transplant journey, AND ALL WILL BE WELL.

As Micki was, so am I, crying, the pictures are so beautiful. And Julie, you are right, Michaela looks wonderful! I love the picture of Michael held in Santa's arms! Too cool! The family picture is great! Take lots of them. I haven't even had Gina to see Santa yet. I'm thinking when big brother is home next week from college, maybe I can get some help with him holding Gina by Santa. I think she might be frightened by him! BUT enough, the kids look great and I love Keely's big smile! She's one proud mama! I love you guys and can't wait until your whole family is reunited on Tuesday. Only three more days to go!!!!
