Sunday, February 27, 2005 3:35 PM CST Hello everyone. Sorry it’s been such a long time between updates but Ellie keeps us VERY busy. She is in preschool now two days a week and goes to daycare one day a week so her Dad can get his rest. Dad still works nights at UPS and Mom still works for Northwest Airlines during the day. For those who hadn’t heard Ellie was diagnosed back in Sept of 2003 as having a “mild” case of cerebral palsy. What this means is that the signals from the brain to the muscles in her arm and leg on the left side have difficulty matching the speed and smoothness of a “typical” child. She has a plastic brace that she wears to help stabilize her left ankle. This also keeps the muscle stretched as she exercises and grows. A shorter cup type brace on her right foot serves to level her stance and allows for even fitting of her shoes. One of the programs available to Ellie at school is physical therapy. In addition to some balance issues, Ellie has difficulty jumping or climbing up stairs without a handrail but every week she grow stronger and more confidant. Though she stumbles occasionally Ellie loves to be on the move. There is no such thing as “lets just walk”; if she had her way everything would move at a running pace. She has shown over the last 16 months nothing can contain her spirit. Ellie is a beautiful happy child who loves animals especially horses, enjoys being read to, sometimes reading to us from the books she knows by heart, and sees a playmate in all those she meets. She talks constantly and more clearly than you would expect from a three year old. Not a day will go by as we are out on a at the mall or the grocery store when she will look right into a stranger’s face, smile and ask “What’s your name?” Most are surprised at her candor but will answer her question and reply “And what is your name?” to which Ellie will firmly say, “My name is Ellie and that’s my Mommy/Daddy.” We know that it is by the generous prayers and good thoughts of all of you, our extended family that Ellie continues to bring such joy and happiness to our hearts. And our joy and happiness will grow when Ellie becomes a Big Sister this coming summer. Ellie can't decide if she wants a baby brother or a baby sister. She changes her mind from week to week. Lori and I simply continue to pray for a healthy baby and an uneventful pregnancy. Knowing that we are a “high risk “ pregnancy based on our history means that this time an OB specialist will monitor Lori much more closely. We would welcome all your prayers and good thoughts as we continue on this journey to become parents again.
