Andy Marso

Andy Marso from St. Cloud MN, a senior journalism major at the University of Kansas, is at the University of Kansas Medical Center after being diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. Andy became ill in his room at Pearson Scholarship hall on Wednesday, April 28, 2004. His housemate, Clay Britton, checked on him at about 11:30 after Andy did not go to his morning classes. Clay drove him to the campus medical center where the staff diagnosed bacterial meningitis. Later he was flown to UK Medical Center in Kansas City.

Hello, Readers --

In response to the request for an update on Andy:

He has been writing for the Basehor Sentinel now for over a year and living with some college friends in a house in Fairway Kansas for nearly that long. In the past fourteen months, he's undergone three surgeries plus brief hospitalizations for infections; he's had heat exhaustion while covering a softball tourney and cellulitis in his leg. Each time, with the assistance of Dr. Leah Luckeroth, who has taken him (and Grandma and me) into her home for extended periods while he's recovered, Andy has been able to continue working and meeting deadlines despite brief crises. He recently decided that things were going well enough so that he could begin looking for a fulltime job in journalism and he's shopping his resume around.

Last December, Eli Lilly used him in a promotional video for the antibiotic drug Xigris, which he received on the helipad at KUMC and which is, in large measure, responsible for his being alive. A couple of months later, Lilly flew him and me to San Antonio for the "premiere" where Andy gave a short introduction. In July, Elizabeth Alex did a nice follow up piece on him.

We have been able to see Andy approximately every other month and we speak with him frequently by phone. It's been difficult letting him find his wings, but it's also part of being a parent. He's worked hard to achieve independence; we've worked hard at letting him. I only hope that by this Christmas, we will be able to share with you news of a fulltime job for him.
