Dear Don and Jeannie,

We have been praying daily for you since we heard of the accident via Honey and Gene via Larry and Susie. We were about to leave for Florida and on the way talked to Ron and learned about CaringBridge. We are finally settled in Florida and hope to get to Sanford this time. We are glad to hear of your progress, Don, and will continue to pray for you both as well as your doctors and surgeons. We thank God that He is answering prayer on your behalf. Remember, Don, that we want to continue to celebrate those close birthdays, no matter which one of us is older! Hope to see you sometime this winter. Much love, with fond memories. I really like that story. I found you guys through a candle named after Nick. And wanted to check on him, because like Nick my son was diagnosed with ALL in May but 2 years after and is now off treatment and doing wonderful also. But is always nice to hear of success stories, stories of hope. And that story of Italy and Holland is exactly how I feel. We just embraced our journey and learned, lived and grown. Have a wonderful Easter Holiday.

Hi!
I was just searching the internet for stories of kids that have battled cancer and came across your son Nick's page. Wow, how inspiring and I am so happy that he is in remission and doing so well!~!!! He is truly a special and brave boy!!! One of my best friends
has a daughter, Haley, age 5, who was diagnosed last June with Rhabdomyosarcoma stage III and is now on hospice care at home. She has been a very strong, courageous girl this past year, but unfortunately, is not doing well. I would love to direct my girlfriend Jean (Haley's mom) to your son's site to read your wonderful story of "Holland". I hope that's ok as it seems so true and it brought tears to my eyes. What a wonderful story to share with those who have a loved one Dx with cancer or any other disability/disease. I hope it brings my friend and her family some comfort. By the way, Haley's website is www.caringbridge.org/de/haley/. Best of luck to Nick and your family! :)

Thank you for sharing your progress, and giving great inspiration. We live in Auckland, New Zealand. Sheila, I wanted you to know that I have been so touched and encouraged to read your story about Nick. My grandson Christian was diagnosed in April 03, high risk due to high WBC, turned 3 in June. I so wish I could fly our little guy through all of these treatments and be blessed with his healing. But I know that day will come in His timing. It helps to see that our weekly and often more than weekly trips, temps, tests, problems were just as much part of your life too...and WOW...here you are today! Thank you for your story about God selecting the Moms. I am tearful but so encouraged. Thank you. Diane, Christian's Mimi in Maryland.

Nick,
I guess you taught those nasty chicken pox a thing or two about messin' around with you! Way to go, big guy. I'll be praying for good counts. I guess it could take a little while to recover, but you can do it! The end of your treatment will be here before you know it. Matthew finishes treatment in two weeks! (He was also diagnosed May 2000, but his treatment is only 2 1/2 years). He's gotten so used to the shots and blood tests, I beginning to wonder if he'll miss them...naaaahhh! God bless and take care.

Hello to all!
I just read your site and saw that Nick had Chicken Pox. This is one of the things we fear the most with Deanna in Kindergarten this year. It sounds like Nick had a pretty rough time but is doing better. We will pray for him. It just doesn't seem fair what these kids have to go through. I know I shouldn't feel this way but sometimes I just have to say it. It was GREAT to see you at the fund raiser and being able to meet Nick and his brothers. We looked for you at Camp Snoopy on Sunday and now I know why you weren't there. Did they have Nick in isolation? When we have asked what would happen if Deanna should get the pox they said she would be hospitalized in isolation but that they now have a drug they could treat her with so we shouldn't be overly concerned. Ya Right!!!! We had an appoinment on Friday and Deanna's counts were great but she has to have a bone density test done on the 26th because the x-rays she had done in July showed she has thinning bones and they want a baseline to go by. Once again we shouldn't be overly concerned. Ya Right!!! Well I hope Mr. Nick gets back to his bouncy self soon. Give me a call sometime (when the pox are long gone) and maybe we could get the kids together at McDonalds or something. Take care and know we are thinking and praying for you and the whole family.

Nick,
I am glad you are home now. I will pray for no more fevers too. Matthew was just inpatient as well in the beginning of the month with viral meningitis. He was a pretty sick kid too, but now he's doing much better. (still tires easily though)...but he was the same as you...doing so well for 2.5 years and then BAM! --you both got really, really sick. But you both are fighters and will get your strength back soon. Take it easy ok buddy! Get all better!!!
Love,
Katrina

Hi Sheila, I don't know if you remember us, we touched base a long time ago on All-Kids I believe. Anyway, I just wanted to check in and see how things are going. I loved the pictures following Nicks treatment. The changes are astounding. I just finished putting together a scrapbook of Austins Wish Trip and pictures following him during his treatment so far. It's hard to believe how bad he looked then and how good he looks now! Just like Nick. Like I need to tell you but... Nick has less than one year to go! That's amazing! Have you started a countdown? God, I cannot wait until the end of Austin's treatment!! We are headed (sorta) down to your neck of the woods this weekend. My husband's grandmother lives in Lake Crystal and we have a family reunion there. Take care & know there's more people in Minnesota thinking of you all.

Hi Nick!
My 5 year old son was dx'd with ALL in Sept 2000. We go to Children's in St. Paul for treatment. My sister-in-law works at Mpls Children's-on the SSU. She is awesome at what she does- she has been our "rock" throughout this whole ordeal. You are such a lucky boy to have her taking care of you when you are inpatient.
When I was reading your journal I was surprised that I have not met you sooner. You see, we have done a lot of the same fundraisers for Leukemia and Lymphoma society (crappie contest, the walk at the mall, etc..) I read that you have had some "bumps" in your journey like my son has. But I think that just makes us all the more thankful for the easier times. I hope you continue to feel good and keep those counts up! If you have a minute you can check out our website.

Nick,
Hey buddy! I hope you are feeling better now...so sorry to read that you and your family have been feeling yucky. I will tell the weather man to listen to your mom and make it snow there ok? Hello, I am Deanna's aunt from Colorado. After reading and viewing your site I can see that there is so much ahead of Deanna. Also there is alot I don't understand but reading your entrys has helped. I will add Nick and the rest of the family to my prayer list. Thank you for being a friend to Dean, Sue and Deanna. Greetings from the Shellens' in Wells. I have been truly touched by your warmth and concern Sheila. I have been meaning to call you as I know you can be a wealth of knowledge for me with this awful disease that we have just embarked on. The past six weeks have seemed like an eternity to me as I have had to watch my beautiful little girl endure so much. It seems like we are either in the hospital or at the clinic, when will life seem normal again. I don't mean to complain, we will do whatever it takes to make Deanna well and her outlook is good. I have just spent some time reading through your site (I hope you don't mind) and I realize how far we have to go. Nick seems like such a strong young man, and he is absolutely beautiful, you must be so proud of him. As Mom's we don't want our children to hurt, and when they do we want to make it all better, a kiss used to do that, but a kiss doesn't make this better. I very dear friend of mine wrote once that if love could heal she would be better already, oh how I wish love could heal. We have put our faith in God and the Doctors and do feel Deanna will have a full recovery. I would love to get together sometime and get to know each other, we could laugh, cry and share together so I hope you don't mind if I give you a call sometime. I hope Nick is doing well. Take care and God Bless.

Ty,
This message is just for you kiddo! I am sorry I didn't know about your tonsilectomy big guy! If I had, I would have sent you a get well card for sure. (I guess I have been busy too and haven't checked one of my favorite websites in a while.) But anyway, I hope you recovered well from it and that you got to eat lots of icecream, pudding, and jello. (Although, THAT probably hurt some just to do that! My older son, Lane, had his tonsils removed when he was 4 and he was in a LOT of pain afterwards and wouldn't eat ANYTHING for days. I hope you did better than he did!!) Well take care and know that I hope that YOU have a blast at Disney too!!! I know that YOU deserve this wish just as much as Nick and am glad that he chose something that YOU get to benefit from too.

Oh Nick! I hope tomorrow brings a better day for you. I keep praying for you all the time. I have a sore throat so I can't help with you so mommy can go to work a little bit.
I will take my medicine so that I can come down and help. Your mommy is doing a good job...do you know she calls your doctor at children's everyday to make sure everything is getting done just right for you...the nurses and doctors here are checking with them too. Everyone is taking care of you and loves you. Mitsey was naughty again today. She dumped ALL her dog food out of her bowl and strung it all over the kitchen floor. She then pushed her bowl into the bathroom downstairs. I told her she had to clean up her mess before she could get anymore food. When I come down we will play cards with Ty again...okay? Well my little sweet pea, I haven't written for awhile but that doesn't mean I have forgotten to say my prayers for you and for your family. Mommy sent me your pictures over the e-mail and I just love them. Everytime Eric and Erica come out I have to pull up pictures of you. I bet that even though they have never seen you in person they would know you. You have a lot more snow than we do but it is snowing now so we might get some more. Have fun playing outside. I am so happy that you are feeling so good! I love you little ones more than all the m&m's in the whole world.. Give your brothers a kiss from kackaneene.

I heard of Nick's condition from my Mom, Joyce Ehrich. My son also was diagnosed with ALL at the age of 3. I am happy to say that he is now 13 and blessed with great health! As a matter of fact, it sometimes seems as though the young child with cancer could NOT possibly be this same teenage boy! Our hearts and prayers go out to you as you overcome this stressful period in your lives. The best advice I have is to keep your faith and keep a smile!...Jon Wertjes and family

all most lost him twice. We will keep Nick in our prayers.

YO LITTLE BUTT! When are you going to come and stay overnight again? That was fun! You were so good last night when we watched you boys..in fact all of you were good..you guys didn't even fight...and you weren't sick either! Just looking at the beautiful, happy smiles of you boys make my heart so warm. Smart..you are so smart and so polite when you answer the phone...thank you for that. One of these days you can come over when I work and spend the day. If you sit on the couch in the shop when I cut their hair until I get done. We could find a day when I only have a few people...okay? Best make supper for grandpa. Grilling steaks now. Love and hugs...grandma karen

Hi Boys and Sheila!
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!
Congrats on the wonderful job with the fundraiser and good luck speaking with the reps! I am proud of your hard work Sheila. I hope Nick is doing well still and escaping the dreaded fever! We thought we were soooo lucky and then wham! Matthew ended up with a fever of 103.8 Monday morning. But luckily we didn't have to make the 3 hour trip to Salt Lake City. His pediatrician treated him here with antibiotics by IV and sent us home, then we returned Tues. for the same. His ANC was 900...so fortunately he did not have to be admitted.
Well take care and congrats again!!!!

Hey Nick,
Try not to eat too much while your taking that meanie munchie pill or your tummy will hurt. I love those roller skates and I bet you can go real fast with those. Remember to wear your crash helmet just in case you decide its cool to crash. I am glad you are feeling good!

I read about Nick and hope all goes well over the next couple of years. I will pray for him and keep all of your family in my thoughts and prayers. I checked out the pictures of him, he's a cutie! Could you please update me on how things are going with him once in a while. Give him a hug and kiss for me, OK?
Could you send me an address where I can send him cards and letters and also his two brothers? Also; send me their birthdays so I can send them cards for that, too.
I'll be praying for him.
Love in Christ.

Hi Sheila,
I'm so glad that you told me about this web page. I had heard something about this on T.V. a little while ago. I thought it was the greatest thing. I wish they would have had this back when Sydney was diagnosed in July of 1998. I hope Nick is feeling well. You sure have so CUTE kids. Another website you can check out is www.leukemia survivor.com. A guy by the name of Robert Brown had run the Twin Cities Marathon in Sydney's honor and started up a website. He also had leukemia ten years ago and has a very interesting story to tell. Sydney's picture is also on that website. Thanks again for telling me about this site. It was fun to read what others had written. Take care and we'll be thinking of you.

We were just checking in to see how our buddy was doing. Those pictures of your boys are precious! Has the new year made you feel any closer to your one year anniversay? It has for us. Sarah Anne was diagnosed the week before you were. I'm thankful for the new friends, I just wish we could have made them another way. You know what I mean? Anyway, I hope the rest of our first year fly by with no unexpected bumps. We'll continue to keep you in our prayers!

Nick & Family,
Just dropped in to say that Bonnie and I are still thinking about you. Your friends in Ohio think about you all the time. I made some more buckeye necklaces and mailed them to a real neat friend in California. His name is Mike Hunter. Just like you we met him on caringbridge. He had a transplant and things are going great from all the news that we get from his webpage. I hope that this is a wonderful New Year for you. The weather here is just like yours coooooold. I would like to be in your part of the country because I like to fish and now I could probably find one of those ice fishing shacks and sit inside and catch some fish. When you get a little older you should try fishing. It is a lot of fun and I can give you some good advice on how to catch them.

Nicko! Hey buddy! I'm still recovering from all your energy from your first days back at daycare. I can hardly believe they call you "sick". You're awesome buddy! I'm so glad your new hairstyle is there to remind me that you are sick. We're so happy to have you back here. Now it seems like our whole family is back home. Except for those kids that think they need to go to school all day, right Tyler! See you next week sweetie. Hugs & Kisses, Sue

Way to go Nick!!! I'm glad to hear you're on maintenance now. I've been trying to find a few free minutes to send you a message, and it's finally here. I've been so busy at work trying to help all the sick cats & dogs that come to the University for emergencies. I hardly have time to check my own e-mail.
Are you getting ready for Thanksgiving? It will be here before you know it. I will be working, or should I say sleeping on Thanksgiving. I'll be busy working nights. Is your mom going to fix a big turkey? Or, is grandma Bleess going to fix one?
I will try to stop to see you all when we come to BE the 26th & 27th of November. If things go well, maybe you can meet my new Grand daughtger, Amiyah Kay. She is 3 1/2 weeks old now. She was born on Oct 24th, 2000. She was 15 days early. She weighed 5 pounds 9 ounces, and was 19 inches long. She was sooo tiny. She had to spend 4 1/2 days in neonatal ICU. She had a little trouble breathing a few hours after she was born. But she's been doing really well. Her big brother David is amazed at his little sister. It's nice to see that she almost can fit into her "premie" clothes well now.
I bet you are waiting for the snow to come, so you can go play outside. Will you be able to bulid snowmen and go sledding this winter?
Say hello to everyone in your family, and to grandma Karen & grandpa Dale.
I'll keep saying prayers for you.

Nick, Mom, Dad, Ty and Zac...We are so proud of you...Yes, this is Nick's illness but it is a family's problem to deal with. You have all done so well in adapting to such a serious situation...some days I know have been difficult...in fact most of them had their challenges...now you continue for another 2 1/2 years with continuous chemo, hoping and praying that you won't relapes. You have made it this far and I truly feel that it took all of you and the prayers to God, by so many all over the world, to pull you through. The doctor's in the Cities, Cahill's clinic, the hospital, support here has been unbelievable. I am so grateful and I feel extremely proud of the way your mom and dad and brother's handled this. Keep up the good work Nick..stay well so your body can keep healing and in 2 1/2 years we can PARTY. Love, Kisses, and many, many prayers are with you all alwyas...Grandma and grandpa Bleess

Hi to Nick and his family!! I'm Rachel Kienitz, a friend of Nick's Mom and Dad, we went to high school together. I have a son, Chandler who turns 3 in December. We started going to Sue Jahnke's Daycare. Today was our first day. Chandler was a little nervous and very unsure about going to a new daycare. We found out Nick was going to Sue's also, and we thought we'd drop a note to say Hi! Chandler is looking foward to having a boy his age at daycare. Sue told Chandler that Nick didn't have any hair, 'cause he had to take special medicine and it made his hair go away and that Nick looked like Daddy Warbuck's and Stone Cold Steve Austin! :-) Chandler replied "I have a lot of hair, we can share" Hope to see you at Sue's soon! Have a great day! - Rachel

Sheila & Chad,
I feel so bad, I just finished reading the last month's worth of journal entries(because I haven't had time lately) and even though I see you guys 3 days a week I really don't realize what you are going through. I wish I could help you out more! Please let me know if there is anything, ever I can do. You guys know so much about this already, I'm so proud of you for joining the American Cancer Society and actually joining committees. I cannot thank you enough. We need more people like you.

Nick,
Again we are missing you terribly. I'm so glad we have Zac around. He does so many things that remind me of you so much. And of course, he's wearing some of the clothes I remember you so well in. He even makes funny noises like you and is trying to skip his naps like you. Are you teaching him to do all those things for me so I can remember what it's like to have you around? If you are, thank you, but don't worry, I won't ever forget having you around and we are anxiously awaiting the end of your treatments so you can come back to daycare. And Mommy can try to get her life back to normal too. Hugs and kisses! We all love you lots!

Hello Sheila, thank you for letting me know my card made it all the way across the ocean, from my house in Scotland, to yours in America! I'm glad your lovely little boy received lots of nice cards, after being featured on MACS. I have spent ages at your website today, reading through all the journal entries, starting way back in June! I am pleased things are progressing well. I am so proud of you...today you were so good and you even helped push the heparin and saline in..you cleaned off your own line. you also let your mother take the tubing out of your port. The worst part was that lousy tape, wasn't it? I want everyone who reads this to know what a big boy you are and how you are so brave. We had fun today going to Walmart after your chemo? You didn't even get sick. You are so good and alot of fun to play with. I do wish you would eat better...french fries and chips just don't cut it honey. You probably just want mom's cooking...right? Thank you for spending the afternoon with me..it was so nice. Tyler comes everyday and that is special too..today was extra special when both of you came over. I am sure it wasn't a lot of fun for any of you, but you know that all those icky cancer cells just got blasted again and that just gets you one step closer to being all better. Nick,
This is Jamie Bowman's grandfather, Rick. There is a suprise coming in the mail. I went to the post office and mailed it today. We are all praying for you in Ohio. I told a friend of mine in Texas about the buckeye necklace that I made for you. The buckeye is a usless nut. She said I took nothing and turned it into somthing very unique.
How wonderful! Turning nothing into somthing is like giving hope to someone when they thought there wasn't any.
She is calling me the Buckeye Angel. I don''t know about that. Just wanted you to know that we are keeping up with your progress and when you look at your necklace remember what my friend said about hope.

Sheila,
You made me laugh when you mentioned that you and Chad can't spell anymore....that will be the case with us next year. We spell EVERYTHING it seems right now. What will we do??LOL

Nick--Is your Dad going to shave his head too?? Matthew's dad didn't either, but it would be so cool to have you and your dad match wouldn't it? I know you are still a cutie-patootie even with no hair.

Hoping for good counts next week--keeping my fingers crossed.
Love,

p.s. Tell your Great Aunt Kay that she is great for signing Matthew's guestbook! I love to hear from her. :)

I hope you will have just as much fun opening it. Guess what... I think bald men are cute. I always have like them. Your great grandpa didn't have hair on the top of his head. He said it was just that he was too smart and the brains kept pushing the hair out of the way. Hang in there all of you. Love ya bunches!!!!!

Hello Nick, Sheila, and family,

Just wanted to check in on you and say hello! I am thinking of you all and hope all is well today. Yes...those 7 days of "peace" are quite nice! The meanies and munchies sure take their toll on you after...mmm...ONE day. LOL Take advantage of the break! I will be hoping that the counts don't drop too low now, so you aren't delayed for the next round of chemo for this phase. At least not delayed toooo long.
Thinking of you often,

Hey bud, do you know how much I miss you and Ty and Zac? A WHOLE BUNCH! That's how much. I know this might be a rough month for you and everyone else too. If I could take all the shots and pills and pokes away and do them for you I would and not even think twice about it. But I can't so I guess I will just keep praying for you and let God take care of you and make you all better. I love you little guy!

Hello Nick,
I read your story on the Make a Child Smile website and sent you and your brothers some things. That is neat that you have received so many wonderful things from all over the world. Your mom sent a thank you note, which I really enjoyed. It had pictures of you and your brothers. You all are such handsome little men!!! She wrote down that you had a website, so here I am.
My son Matthew is your age and also has ALL. He is a little ahead in treatment as he was dx 12 days before Christmas last year. He is in the 2nd Delayed Intensification phase. What you are just beginning, but the second time. You be sure and take Zantac whenever you can. It will really help your tummy! Matthew's tummy hurt lots because of Decadron--A.K.A. The "Meany Pill". That's what I call it. Sheila, I am thinking of you too. Matthew put me in tears quite a few times because of the meany pill. I am praying for patience for you...take it one day at a time.

Hey Tyler, I wanted to say "HI" to you too big guy!! I am sorry you got Fifth's disease. Bummer. But you will feel better soon. Hang in there. That is awesome that you started 1st Grade. Way to go. Matthew has an older brother too. He is 5 1/2 and is in Kindergarten. He has a hard time understanding Matthew's treatment too. That would be neat to send postcards or letters to each other. Kind of help brighten each other's day. What do you think?

Well take care everyone. Sorry this was so long.
Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers,

Katrina (Matt's Mom...age 2.5, dx ALL 12/99, CCG 1952-B2, www.caringbridge.com/ut/matthew )

WOW!! Swallowing pills at age 2 1/2! You are AWESOME, Nick!! :-)
Finally got around to checking out the website after the last leg of our vacation. Had a difficult time remembering to do this when I had time and access to the computer :-{ Good to hear about the interim respite of treatment, but sorry to hear about the latest bump in the road. Hope and pray that the week off of the offending medications will do the trick.
I like the quotes you have been sharing, Sheila. Thanks! And for the family, keep on keeping the faith! You are all AWESOME!! It's good that some of the trips to Children's can be combined with fun events, too.

Hi Nick & Family: I just came from Grandma Karen's Beauty Shop and she made me "beautiful"....well she gave me a hair cut and perm anyway. We talked about you and what a brave boy you are and some of the things she does with you and your brothers. She is looking forward to a visit from Kay and Chris next week. I'm sure they will stop and visit you and your family too. It was fun to be able to see you and your family the day of your benefit. It was fun today wasn't it? Mom will never know about our tossing shoes, papers, straws, over our shoulders in the kitchen...we made a mess, didn't we? Did you show your brothers how I taught you to make spit balls and shoot them through straws? That was a mess!! How about the squirt gun? It is a cool squirt gun isn't it? You better save it for when I am there on Mondays instead of mom. I sure hope the tables and windows and walls dried up before your mom noticed!! If she gets mad, just wiggle your eyebrows and smile pretty and she will be just fine. We need to have fun don't we? Trent and Tahnisha don't have anyone to argue with about Who's Mommy they are talking about. My Mommy! No, My Mommy! No, My Mommy! etc. We had so much fun at the Benefit but you seemed so shy. We know we can get you to giggle once you get to Sue's again. We hope you miss us too! From All of us at Sue's house.

Wow what a cool web site to keep all us long lost relatives close. My family will be keeping little Nick and his family in our prayers. Be thankful that if there is a cancer to have this one is one of the more cureable ones. Hard to understand how it can happen to such little ones. Sorry we can not be with your family on Sunday but I know many of my other Brandsoy siblings will be there to offer you all of our support. Just keep the faith Sheila and Chad and things will work out!

You are such a good boy and your big brother Ty has been alot of help...ZAC...Well...is another subject. He runs and runs and runs...then he climbs and climbs and climbs doesn't he? We went to Dinasours and Ty and Devon had a blast...Nick was up on my lap from the very beginning and over my shoulder "hiding " his face...he was scared. So Nick fell asleep through the show and even Grandma did. Once in awhile I would wake up when the other boys would scream something like...'Oh my gosh" or "YUK". That show was just a bit much for Nick although there were others his age there. We had naps..we had fun. I asked Nick if he liked the show and he said YAH! I scarded". We stopped by for our "Grandkid Fix" tonite and it was a zoo! It is good to see that again. Nick calls Zachary William, "Hackary Bill" for some strange reason...He's easier to scold as Hackary bill than Zachary William. Gotta Go...Love you...

Hi Sweetie! You are such a brave boy...what a trooper you are. Everyday, many times a day, we pray and ask God to help you and your mommy and daddy and all of us. YOU KNOW WHAT??? HE IS HELPING US...YEH! You are getting BETTER! Pretty soon you can stay overnight and we will PLAY all sorts of fun games. I might even wear one of my funny hats to bed. We will tell stories and talk funny. Love you..
