Journal

Greetings! I hope all of you who keep Laura in your prayers are enjoying spring and experiencing the hope it always brings. It was a long, long, cold winter. It was a long, long, difficult time for Laura as well.

In the beginning of December, Laura had surgery to allow lengthening of her aductors and heel cords. She was in leg casts (to the top of her legs) and had a bar that kept her legs very far apart. Serial casting was done 3 different times. Laura was in soo much pain. She lost a lot of weight and required 24hr care. It was so very hard to see her like this. Many times I wondered if we had made the right choice. We stayed home during Christmas break and read a LOT of books, colored a LOT of pictures, played a LOT of hangman, and did a LOT of crafts. The hoidays slowed down a lot too which I am always very glad about.

Towards the end of January, the casts were completely removed. Laura was soo weak and we were concerned that she would never be back to her strength that she had before the surgery.

But Laura is Laura and she has pushed through this weakness and is soo much stronger! She can walk (though still with her walker) sooooo much better! She is now doing about 20 minutes on the treadmill, can bike by herself, and is altogether so much more comfortable with her legs. She is so happy about the change and is more determined than ever to walk unassisted. She inspires me so much - her determination, her hope, her belief in herself........

Thank you for all your prayers - they are being answered! The surgery seems to be very successful so far!

Laura continues to do well homeschooling. A new book I am using for phonics is helping her show significant progress. It is a slow process, but the delight on her face when she finishes reading a short story is worth all the pain and struggle that came before. She can't get enough of simple addition (it might be due to the fact that I have been using mini M&Ms to do the problems and when she gets a problem correct - she eats her answer!!). She is very interested in ancient history - we just finished a study on medival life. We have also been studying metamorphosis - we raised painted lady butterflies, ladybugs, and frogs (from tadpoles). We also caught a female praying mantis and kept her until she died last month. She laid 3 egg sacs (though none hatched). It was fascinating to watch her habits. Laura spent many hours watching all of this and never grew tired of talking about it all.

I hope to get some new pictures up soon - it is hard to find the time to get here and update though!

I do want you to know that we are always so very thankful for your prayers and concern for Laura!

Blessings to you all during this most holy of all seasons,

Until next time,
Carol
