Thursday, May 18, 2000 at 04:01 PM (CDT) Thank you, thank you, thank you to the many people who have shared our pain over the past week. Leslie's funeral on Monday was attended by many hundreds of folks; you made the day special for us. Listening to the Portland Symphonic Girlchoir sing "I'm Goin Up A Yonder" was so special. Leslie sang that with the choir; we have it on CD and to hear the truly angelic sound of the choir was wonderful. We played several of Leslie's favorite songs prior to the Mass of the Resurrection. It was very emotional for us as both Kathleen and I felt as if we could hear Leslie singing along; we had heard her sing them so frequently. The last, Breath of Heaven from Amy Grant's Christmas CD, seemed perfect for our girl. Not only did it reflect her, but we've listened, through Leslie, to that CD year-round for many years. I remember well listening many times while she was in ICU. True to form, the community continues to rally in support of Leslie's causes. Alki is raising money for Sara Lawson in Uzbekistan. There was a dear article in today's paper about their efforts. They clearly understand how important Sara and her work are to Leslie. Kathleen continues raising money for the Leukemia Society. Today Skyview High School presented her with a check for $577.00 (and another 100 from the Rockies- our Little League Baseball team). Kathleen will again be running a marathon with Leslie as her honored patient. Support goes to The Leukemia Society, TNT, attn Leslie Zolbe 6501 SW Macadam Portland, OR 97201. So many people have been supportive in these difficult days. We have received beautiful flower arrangements, many plants for our yard, meals daily, some of the most touching cards imagineable, time with family and friends- this has been an overwhelming experience. Throughout the past several days, I keep thinking about how Leslie would have enjoyed this. Having family visit was so important to her; she would have had the most fun. And the food!! She would have been in heaven- but then again, that's where she is! Christian and I have spoken several times about how she is going to be waiting for us. I tell him he is a shoo-in; I hope I don't go on the waiting list. I believe Taylor's lasting impression was reflected in a conversation we had yesterday. He earnestly told me how impossible it would have been for anybody to have survived Leslie's ordeal. He flatly said that if Leslie could not get through her illness, then there is no person on this earth who could have. He quiely said that she IS the toughest person in the whole wide world. I think maybe he is right. A final thank you to all who have supported us during Leslie's long trial. She faced it with character and dignity. Kathleen and I, as well as the boys, know fully how blessed we were that God chose us to spend time on this earth with her. A part of that blessing was your involvement. We know the standing-room-only crowd at the church was a portion of the people with us in spirit. The Columbian and the Oregonian had articles on the funeral- for those of you out of town, you can probably find them on-line. We are thinking this will be our last update, though of course none of us know the future. Please remember Leslie not for her leukemia, but for the wonderful girl she was. Her smile did not know cancer. Her laughter, her appetite, her humor, her hair, her singing voice, her love- none knew cancer. To remember her as the girl who died from leukemia does not do her service. Her life was better than that. Matthew
