< PICTURES . . . IN THE MIDDLE PICTURE, AND THE BOTTOM ONE, KYLE WAS STILL ON TREATMENT. IN THE TOP PICTURE, HE HAD BEEN OFF TREATMENT FOR SEVERAL MONTHS.

Tuesday, August 18, 2009 9:26 AM CDT Today is the ten year anniversary of Kyle's diagnosis. This is my last Caringbridge entry because, thankfully, there is nothing to report these days. The messages have trickled to an end and I no longer remember to check the pages of others. We have settled back into an average family routine, but we have all changed and grown from our experience. My very wise friend Julie told me a story of a person who had planned a trip to Hawaii (or somewhere) and ended up going to Holland (or somewhere), but who, after the initial disappointment, quickly learned to appreciate Holland. The lesson of the story was that life will often lead us down paths - or roller coasters, in the case of cancer diagnosis and treatment - that we would never have planned to take - but that we can grow and learn and even find peace and beauty in those places. Kyle is now 15 years old and will be a sophomore in high school. He has a girlfriend, plays volleyball for his school, and is strong, mature for his age, smart, funny, and considerate. As I write this, I think back on our journey and all our experiences, good and bad, and I remember those who sadly did not survive. We had the honor of meeting so many wonderful people over the years, both patients and their families and medical and other professionals. Kyle continues to benefit from those special people; he is at a wonderful camp this week, Ronald McDonald Camp in the Poconos, where he can spend time with other former patients and siblings, and the volunteers who give of their time and add so much to the experience, and have some time away from home. He looks forward to it every year and it's perfect timing that he is away having fun on this day. Peace and love to all, Sue
