Amy's Fight

This banner was made as a gift from Stephanie and Helen. I think the words speak for themselves. Welcome to Amy's web page. She was 19 years old and diagnosed on October 5, 1999 with Osteosarcoma, a bone cancer. Over the past 5 years she had endured countless rounds of chemotherapy, over 25 surgeries, and five different sessions of radiation for her lungs and arm. On March 28, 2000, a day none of us will ever forget, her leg was taken from her. Amy in her words, "I realized my life would never be the same again." Amy enjoyed every day of her life. She enjoyed playing all kinds of sports. She had an amazing attitude and tons of determination. She never gave up fighting. Her motto was, "Never give up!" We hope you enjoy Amy's site, we will try to keep it updated as much as possible. We miss her and from what we've seen, you miss her too! Thanks for stopping and don't be afraid to sign the guestbook, We would love to hear from you. The following is a poem written by Amy. It is called The Fight

I woke up in the morning to the brightness of the sun
But by night fall I was hit with words that seemed to weigh a ton

I had gone to the doctor’s office to see what was wrong
By the end of the stay I had to be 10 times as strong

The doctor seemed to be talking with words that made no sense
He said I had cancer, which made my muscles tense

But how could that be when I’m just a “normal” kid
The doctor reassured me it was nothing I did

The light at the end of the tunnel seems to be far
But I have to put that behind me and look for the distant star

The times are rough, I can guarantee you that
I was put to the test in one on one combat

There are times when I’m frustrated, and things I don’t understand
But I know what I need to do, to stay in command

The doctors and nurses said they’re not giving up on me
Until they hear the words, You’re cancer free

The star in the distance has not yet arrived
The day will come when I can say I survived

Journal

Friday, March 19, 2010 6:45 PM CDT

Ok.....So it's been a whole year....I check in from time to time but I haven't taken the time to add a new journal entry. I hope everyone has had a year of good health and fond memories.

Amy's Mom and Dad: Dad is about to retire in April from a job he has been working at for over 40 years and has never missed one single day...can you imagine that. I can't. He is very excited to begin his journey as a retiree. I think he is probably going to drive my mom crazy. Good Luck to her! Mom continues to do daycare which I think she is planning to continue for at least a couple of more years. I think she also is approaching 40 years of service. Wow! They still love traveling, Florida still being their favorite destination. I am going to make an educated guess that a future retirement home might just be in the works on their next Florida vacation.

Denise(That's me) and Dick: Still busy with kids. Brittany is 19 and graduated with honors as the Salutitorian of the class of 2009 from Sartell High School and is currently in her first year at St Cloud State University in St Cloud, MN. She is going to major in Nursing. She lives at home, deciding that dorm life wasn't the thing for her after a couple of overnight visits on campus with her friends. We're happy to have her. Brandon is about to turn 17 and is a junior in high school. He's a liscensed driver now. Yikes! He played football with a team that made it to the state championship which just happened to be their only loss of the year. He also played basketball and is enjoying a couple of weeks off before the baseball season begins. He also plays baseball during the summer, so his down time is very limited. Sometimes I don't know how he juggles sports and school but he's doing a great job. We're so proud of them.

Andrew and Michele: It's all beginning for them. Dylan is 6 years old and started Kindergarten this year. Mason is 2. He keeps everyone on their toes. Dylan and Mason love spending time on their Grandma and Grandpa's farm. They love anything that has to do with farm. I've never seen so many farm toys. They have at least 2 of everything. They also love spending time at their lake where they like to swim, fish and hang out with mom and dad....and play with toys in their massive sand pile that I think was supposed to go along the shoreline but most of it stayed in a pile for them to play in.

We know that Amy continues to look down upon all of us and keeps a close watch over her family that she loved so much. We continue to miss her and think of her each and every day knowing that someday we will meet up with her again where she will welcome us with open arms. We love you Amy!
