Today I was looking through the many photos I’ve recently organized of Frank and his family and thought about a fun time he and I had together. I wanted to share how witty and funny Frank could be.
In 1994, Frank received a Merrill Lynch award trip for two to Puerto Rico. Nan was very near delivery with Nicole and was not able to travel by air. So, Frank asked me to join him. I did.
It was a very early Friday morning in May, and we are on our way to O’Hare airport in a stretch limo. We pulled right up to the Sky Cap. He’s a middle-aged guy, a pro-cap, who had been doing this gig for awhile. He greets us as we exit the limo (no doubt he sees a couple of big tippers). He takes the bags and asks for the tickets.
He looks at the tickets, looks at us, looks at the tickets again.
“Galanti, right?” asks the Sky Cap with an Italian accent, which was odd for a brother from Chicago.
“Yep!” Says Frank.
“Brothers?” asks the Sky Cap. Frank nods.
“Going to Puerto Rico for awhile, huh?” the Sky Cap says with a smile in his voice.
“Yep!” Frank says quickly, thinking nothing of his comment.
The Sky Cap smiles as he preps the paper work and checks the bags. As he hands Frank the boarding passes, he chuckles and says:
“I get it, you’re all going to Puerto Rico till things cool off, right?”
Frank looked up, met the guys eyes, and it all came to Frank in an instance. This guy thinks the Galanti boys are blowing town to avoid a situation with the cops, or worse, the mob!
Frank, quickly dips his hand in his pocket, pulls out a twenty, presses it into the Sky Cap’s hand, pauses, and says:
“You never saw us…”
We laughed all the way to the gate.
Brother, I really miss those times.
