I was on Caring Bridge for another friend and thought of Kelsey wondering how she is doing. Such a long time since we met at the Apl Anem Conference in 2001 in St Louis, so close to the very beginning of the transplant. Hope all is still well. I am 22 years in remission and going strong.

Hi Kelsey....we are so happy to hear that you are doing well. Your Gramma and Grampa let us look at your scrapbook - what a terrific job you did! We certainly loved seeing them again at the Hacienda this winter and look forward to next year with them.

Just wanted to stop in and say hi. My son Matthew was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia on April 5,2002. We were one of the fortunate ones that had a matched sibling. They sent us to Duke for the bone marrow transplant. We are now eight months post transplant and his white blood cells and platelets are normal but his hemoglobin is still just a little low. We hope that Kelsey continues to do well and wish your family a HEALTHY and HAPPY new year!!!

Dear Kelsey,
Just today I was telling my class about you because we were discussing our heroes again. During the discussion I noticed the date and realized it was two years ago that your "journey" began. I can't believe it's been two years! I never cease to be amazed by your courage, your strength, and your undefeatable spirit! At the risk of repeating myself, YOU are my hero, Kelsey!

Dear Joan and family, It's been a long time since I had seen an update, my internet at work has been down since September! and that where I had your websight address. It finally dawned on me to check one of your old emails and there was the address! Only people who HAVE to have internet access to do business have access-- (too much surfing going on I think!) Last thing I know was Kelsey was going in for the bone marrow transplant. I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad to hear that things are going well. I've thought of you alot especially during the holidays. Happy Fall to all the Hobbs!!

Hey, Spensor, I can't beleive your a sophmore!! I remember, and it doesn't seem that long ago, when you sat in Mrs. DeAndrade's class playing with a little orange spider that you had taken out of your pocket. You carefully kept it hidden under the table so no one would notice!!! When you saw me watching you, you quietly placed it back in your pocket and smiled at me!! I'll always remember that!! Now it is Cooper's turn at Fairlawn in Mrs. DeAndrade's class, I hope he is enjoying it ! Does he have a little orange spider? Walter, it must be nice to return to a fairly normal work schedule, I hope your doing well too. Liz said that she saw Joan and Kelsey going into the HS last Thurs. after school, she said you both looked so happy. Liz said that Kelsey looked great and that her smile was radiant! Have you broken the record yet? We are all cheering for you !

Be patient with yourself, it will take time to get yourself back to full speed, but it sure sounds like you have the determination. Great to read how long it has been since you have needed a transfusion. Keep it up, the best is yet to come!!! God knows you deserve it. As always, we continue to pray for you.

Kelsey (and the rest of the Hobbs) -- These good wishes are coming to you from the great, HUGE state of Texas. My daughter Amy (age 22) and I met your mom at the AAMDS patient/family conference a little over a month ago. Even though you weren't able to attend that conference, we certainly look forward to meeting you next year.

We never have found a match for Amy, but I know what a drag being released from the hospital and then having to return so quickly and unexpectedly is. That was the course of the first 2+ years of Amy's illnesses. Please know how many folks have you in their thoughts and prayers. I hope knowing that will give you the continued strength to recover. Be patient with your body and take good care.

To Kelsey, Joan, Walter, Cooper and Spencer,
I just want you to know that Donna and I are thinking about you alot here in Philadelphia. Joan, I just got your note (had some email trouble). Sorry that I didn't know that Kelsey went ahead with a transplant. Ironically, we (my company) just did our first bone marrow transplant in Louisiana for a person in their late twenties with aplastic anemia. We did it last week and we are still awaiting engraftment results. The degree of mismatch with this recipient was very high and we are anxious to here the results. I was thinking about you all and Kelsey the whole time we did the procedure. Needless to say, it is great news hearing that you have engrafted. You have cleared the biggest hurdle. I don't think anyone realizes the bravery required to do what you have done, and Joan and Walter, that goes for your whole family also. It sounds like Kelsey underwent a conditioning regimen that is alot more toxic than the one that our company is using in our clinical trial. Good comes with the bad though, since the risk of non-engraftment increases if the conditioning is not strong enough. If it means anything, I met a 65 year old woman at my niece's Christening last month who had a bone marrow transplant 15 years ago for leukemia. She looked great and came up to introduce herself to me when she heard I was involved in BMT. Please keep a positive attitude. I have forwarded all of the info about your transplant to my co-workers to give them a feeling for what it is like for patients undegoing a BMT. Our prayers are with you. We will continue to follow your progress on your site. Take care! Bill and Donna

I'm not sure how much money was raised yet, but participation was high and many people were asking about you and wishing you well. Hang in there!

You know you are the strongest person I have ever met in my 45 years of life. I know you've been given a lot of suffering in your time so far but we have to believe that some absolute miracles will come from all of this suffering. Hi Kelsey - I hear you've been up a bit more lately - playing cards, flipping through magazines and such. Well as you begin to contemplate the outside world, here are some Deep Thoughts to mull over:
*Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and so is mankind.
*To me, it's a good idea to always carry two sacks of something when you walk around. That way, if anybody says, "Hey, can you give me a hand?" you can say, "Sorry, got these sacks."
*If you work on a lobster boat, sneaking up behind people and pinching them is probably a joke that gets old real fast.

I know - you're probably pressing that med button right now - these thoughts are soooo painfully funny.

You know we're with you all the time, Kelsey. Keep up the good fight girl - You are doing a great job! (You too Walt & Joan). Hope to see you sometime soon. All our love - the Hoppers

Dear Kelsey,
Good luck in the next few weeks! As they say, only time will tell. I am the mother of a 17 y.o. who also has aplastic anemia. He was diagnosed in Oct. 2000. So far, his lab results are low but stable (no transfusions yet). He gets tired, but that's it as far as his symptoms go (no bleeding tongue or gums, no mouth ulcers, not a lot of bruising). I'm not sure where this is going to take us, but I do know I will be more prepared thanks to your web site. I did speak on the phone with your mom back in Nov. when Darren was first diagnosed. We talked for about an hour and she really helped allay some of my fears....thanks Joan! My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dear Kelsey,Copper,Spenser,Joan and Walter,
The Brais family would like to join your many well wishers in sending our positive energies, prayers and love. Indeed, today has been one of your most difficult days on the road you have traveled. It is a road less traveled and there have not been many maps for you to chart your way. It has been your strength, determination and faith that have brought you to this place. Continue to stay strong and postive for that is what keeps your faith alive.
The day will soon come again.... when Joan and Walter are asleep upstairs, Kelsey forgets her key and is locked out of the house. Being of sound mind ,of course, Kelsey knows she has to break in!! Liz and Kelsey find an open window and Liz squeezes through. It is amazing that their laughter didn't wake the entire block!! When Liz told me this story we laughted for a long time. We both knew that it would be awhile before Kelsey would be out on the town and staying out late with the girls. But we'll hold that memory close within our hearts, knowing that it will only a matter of time before....Joan and Walter are asleep upstairs and Kelsey forgets her key....
Rest well, dear friends, God is with you, and so is the love of your many friends.

Love Betty, George, Liz,Mike and Sarah Brais <BBrais@home.com>

I just love this guest book! Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to write something. It's wonderful to see how much support Kelsey has!

Bill - she's got a good room with a view, not a great view, but not a brick wall either.

Diane - I hope to be a group this Thursday (Day -1) before I go up to Boston with Cooper. Once the transplant is over, we will try to get Cooper back to his group.

Jen - there are pictures of the "blond bombshell Kelsey" somewhere in the house. Eventually I'll find them and put them on this site.

Cindy - thanks for the offer to help, it's nice to know someone is close by who knows the city better than we do

Kel's friends - keep the messages coming! Any goofy stories about stuff going on with you guys (and I'm sure you have them) will be good for Kelsey to see. You know more than anything, she wishes she could be hanging out with you and going to school.

Hi Kelsey - Hope your tests are going well, and the drive is not too bad. I went online looking for deep thoughts and found a funny place. I thought you might enjoy this:

Fear can sometimes be a useful emotion. For instance, let's say you're an astronaut on the moon and you fear that your partner has been turned into Dracula. The next time he goes out for the moon pieces, wham! You just slam the door behing him and blast off. He might call you on the radio and say he's not Dracula, but you just say "Think again, bat man."

We love you. J,R,K,T,S
