In one school day 46 children will learn they have cancer. Leukemia is the most common form of pediatric cancer. Last year, 12,500 infants, children and teens were diagnosed with cancer in the US. Leukemia accounts for about 25% of all childhood cancers and affect about 2,200 American young people each year.

Acute childhood leukemias are also divided into acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), depending on whether specific white blood cells called lymphyocytes, which are linked to immune defenses, are involved.

Approximately 60% of children with leukemia have ALL, and about 38% have AML.

The ALL (which is what Tommy had) form of the disease most commonly occurs in younger children ages 2 to 8, with a peak incidence at age 4. But it can affect all age groups. Tommy was dx with ALL when he was 4 years and 10 months old. Which is the peak age.

The Light the Night Walk will be coming up sooner than you think. So be prepared I will start hitting everyone up for donations. Also we will have the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon for the CMC in May. So will be posting more on both events very soon.

If you would like to walk with us in the Light the Night Walk in October please e-mail me or post here on the website. Our team name will be the same has always “Leuka Kids”.

Good Evening Everyone!!!
Sorry it has been so long since I updated. Tommy is doing great. The doctor's would not approve him to play football this season. Which was fine with Billy. Even though we are 6 years into being Cancer free he still worries a good bit at times. And the past two football season's seeing Tommy with so many bruises and having problems hurting in places he shouldn't plus the breathing issues. It was just a good reassuring thing to him and I both that the doctor's felt it was best for him not to play football anymore. His coach though said Tommy is still a part of the football team this year. So Tommy is recording the games and any other stuff they need help with.
So on to more stuff. Tommy is doing good in school.
He is passing all his classes this year so far. Which makes me very proud of him. A few weeks ago I had to go for a meeting at school about his classes for this year and next school year. And as I sat there & discussed everything with the other teachers & the principal, I couldn't help but think how thankful I am that he has made it this far. Unless you as a parent, have ever had to go through the struggles we have had with Tommy getting sick, making the decision weather to do the strong chemo or not. And at times if we should even continue with the harsh chemo. I can remember sitting there 7 to 8 years ago wondering if we will make it through and see him make it to middle school. And look here we are...He is in 8th grade, doing great, participating in everything possible at school and church. This past weekend we took them to the lake camping and when Tommy started breaking out in the bad rash like he always does anytime he gets in any lake water you could tell he was worried. See there are so many different signs of relapse with cancer and a un explained rash can be one of them. I just sat there after he took a shower and assured him it was nothing to worry about. Monday afternoon when I picked him up from school he asked me why did the chemo have to affect him like this? Because you see before cancer, which is hard to remember sometimes, he never broke out in any kind of rash. There are so many things that having chemo at any age but such a young age as he was can do to you. I'm just thankful everyday that he has made it and that so far we have been able to deal with each and every late term side effect of chemo.
Well sorry for all this rambling. I'm sure it makes no sense at all. There is just so many things I would love to say. But I have a hard time putting them out there.
Please keep a special little girl Julia Grace, in your prayers. I have only met her once. But she is fighting Leukemia. The same type Tommy had. She is only 2 years old. So please keep her in your prayers. As well as Davey and Jordan. And any other children fighting cancer.
Well I need to get off of here. I just want to think the most important person and that is God!!! Because with out him I can guarntee you we would not have made it the past 9 years. Remember, With God all things are possible!!!!
Love and Prayers always,
Dawn
