Hi Danette and Jacob--

I am looking at your web page, it is really neat. As you know, I have gone through much of this with Steven, so just as you are one of my partners at work, even though I may leave one day, I will always keep you in my thoughts, because all of this comes very close to myself and my family. Keep your faith very strong, it works, as you know Steven finished his last chemo treatment on Thursday, 2-3-05. He has been in remission for 2 years now.

A PRAYER FOR CHRISTMAS

God Give Us eyes this Christmas
To see the Christmas Star.
And give us ears to hear the song
of angels from afar

And, with our eyes and ears attuned
for a message from above,
Let "Christmas Angels" speak to us
of hope and faith and love

Hope to light our pathway
When the way ahead is dark,
Hope to sing through stormy days,
with the sweetness of the lark

Faith to trust in things unseen
and know beyond all seeing
That it is in our Fathers love
We live and have our being

And love to break down barriers
of color, race and creed,
Love to see and understand
and help all those in need.

Lord, bless those we love this Christmas Day,be they near or far away Bless those good friends who mean so much and those with whom we're out of touch. We bring them all to You in prayer, and ask You to keep them in Your care.

Please know that you are thought of, in a very special way, not just this beautiful season but every day.

Hi, my name is Danovan Valentin, I am 15 years old and I have also been a cancer patient for the past few months.
In March 2004 I was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. But thanks to God I am now fully recovered and I learned that if you have faith miracles can happen. Be strong and no matter what happens don't lose faith. I pray for Jake’s full recovery.
God Bless you all.Danovan

Hope this finds you all doing well and enjoying the summer. Danette Ronnie had the same thing - a hydrocele. It scared the beegeebers out of me to see one testicle all swollen and this was, geez, he was like 4 at the time, it was very close to the beginning of treatment. We had to see a urologist and have an ultrasound done to make sure it wasnt the leukemia and as unexpectedly as it happened it left, happened once more, and has never happenedd again (he's 7 now). Supposedly they are all born like that and the passageway closes up after the testicles drop, but its weird how some kids it only pops up as problem at 4 or 5...

Hi,
Sorry to hear about the intestinal junk. Sounds like you caught it in time so Jake will be able to get through it quickly. I get sad every graduation Spring when my "babies" leave. Sometimes I have been lucky enough to have them 3 out their 4 years in high school. Oh well, like you said I guess they have to grow up! Danette,

I'm sorry about the blip with Jake's eyes. Darn if you can't get rid of those steroids just yet!! I know how badly you want to, and how tired you are of having to deal with their side effects. Like you said, one of the "good" things about them, might just be the long term survival. Having years of chronic gvh takes it's toll, but if it brings about remission forever, I guess we can "live" with it......it's easier for me to look back on now and say that, but while we were in the midst of it, I thought it would never end. I even tried to prepare myself for permanent gvh, since I had read that some patients DID have that. I didn't like thinking about that, but it was always a better option than not surviving at all. I wish the road to recovery could be easier overall, but unfortunately, it doesn't work that way.

I DO wish you luck on your job hunt. What are you looking for? and how does it affect your school situation?

Thanks for checking in on us and Brian. I'm glad you like what we did on the front of his page. Now you can maybe help me add JMML kids to our front page, and then we will be set!

Hope all is well. Take care.

Hi there sweetie! How adorable you look on your horsey! ;) I think you will become a talented equestrian (ask your mommy what that is!), just concentrate on getting better first. You're strong honey, and you have angels all around you. :)

Danette, hon. I can't imagine what it would be like to be in your place. Nor would I want to be in your place. I know you feel like you're breaking. I bet it's so hard. But know that God doesn't give us more than we can handle. This I'm sure of. You are a rock and an angel to your Jacob. This I also know. I will keep your family in my prayers. I also pray that there is someone to be a rock for you. (((((((((((((Danette)))))))))))))))))

Hi Jake sweetie!

What a beautiful smile you have on your face little man! Oh, what it would be like to place a kiss on those wonderful cheeks to show you how much you are loved :)

Please watch over your mother as she's a special angel here on Earth for you as you are one for her! Sometimes she doesn't think she can go on but I know there's an angel with her holding her up when she's feeling down. You've got an angel like that too, a special one made just for you so keep on smiling and know that you are very, very loved :)

Danette,
I am so glad that you left that post there. It really touched my heart. There are so many people out there aching like you are and maybe it will give them the courage to let others know how hard it really is. I know you must experience so much sadness and heartbreak, but you are not alone. There are angels all around you and I will pray that you can find some strength and peace somehow. Hi Danette,

I'm glad you left the update and didn't delete it. Its how so many of us feel but haven't been able to put it into words. Everything you said is how I felt and still feel years later. When I ask for updates for my site.... I feel bad when I write about how good my Angel is doing....when so many other precious kids are still fighting the battle and some die and I feel even worse. Thank you for saying what I have been trying to say for years. No one understands unless they have lived it. Take care and even though I don't sign the guestbook often....I'm always checking up on Jacob. (HUGS)

Danette,
The new pics are great! Thanks for adding them. I need to finish putting some of ours on the extra photo page.

Anyway, I understand your concerns about steroid weight, etc. It was a big concern for us too for a long time, but it FINALLY came off.......(except the neck). Now comes the growth issue, which you speak of too. So far, the endocrinologist says since he IS growing (albeit slowly) just keep watching and waiting and checking height and weight and bone age xrays, growth factor labs etc. We've recently done that again and are awaiting the results.....it's so hard sometimes, I know, as people stare at your child. Most of the time, you don't even notice because you are looking into the eyes of your child and into their heart...occasionally though, you see what they see when you get photographs back or see them next to a child "their" age and the differences are glaring! It's hard, but then you just step quietly back into your "own world" where you are so grateful that you still have your child here to love and to hold and you go on about your (new definition of) "normal" routines. It's just the way it is.....stinks sometimes, but that's life. Most of the time, it's pretty good. So, hang in there, vent when you want/need to, and I pray that things all work out in the long run for all of our kids and their special needs/problems.

Take care. Hugs,

Dearest Danette,
Thank you for stopping by to see us. You know its funny how many people say they wish words could help??? Well, let me tell you, it depends how you look at it. No, words will never help stop the pain and grief, HOWEVER, the support that they send is powerful and very much appreciated. I personally love caringbridge and its intended purpose. You all make me laugh, make me cry, and most of all keep me informed how everyone is doing in their battle against the dreaded monsters of all the different journeys being fought, and the ones that have been lost here on earth. Hey Danette,
I have read all of your updates and I want you to know that you are an inspiration, because no matter what happens you keep going with a possitive outlook and Jake,Sam, and Richie are so very lucky to have a mom like you. You tell Jake that his Aunt Wanda loves him and I will keep you in my prayers. Keep going Danette, it is well worth it!!!! You are so right, Jake is very handsome in his glasses or am I being biased like you?(I am his aunt)

Well you are correct - life can be very complicated and very easy sometimes - it depends on our own experiences and different perspectives - what is horrible for some is nothing for others... But for sure, the world will be a better place the day people start looking around instead of isolate in their small "worlds", help others and give importance only to the REAL important things in life. May the angels protect you and Jacob. Kisses from Brasil.

Oh wow Danette, that last line of your entry rings so true, coming on the heels of Anthony, Jalen, and now this morning Colby's deaths. Its sickening, it really is. We shouldnt have all these kids with cancer in the first place -- losing them is even moreso inconceiveable. I hope this finds things going a little better for you emotionally (HA! right, thats out the window) and that you know many people are out here thinking of you!

Danette,
Jake certainly is cute in the glasses. I love the pictures of your family. This is my first time visiting your site - thank you for visiting Matthew's Website and signing his guestbook a while back. You are so right about taking things for granted - give your kids lots of hugs while you can. Good luck in nursing school! I am a nurse and I love it. I donated blood yesterday and it always makes me feel good because I have seen the kids who need it so badly. Even though I don't like the stick, it is nothing compared to what our kids go/went through to fight cancer. My thoughts and prayers are with you for continued remission for Jake.

Hey, Jake, don't let those kids tell you that you don't look great in your glasses. Just tell them that you are a very special person since only very special people get to wear neat glasses. I've had mine since I was 3 years old & now I'm 45, so I know what I'm talking about!!! You get to change glasses like most kids change clothes & you're always styling with them on!!! You have a beautiful family. I finally found the time to look at some of the web pages in the support group, and in reading Jake's I was reminded that he too was just a little guy when diagnosed. Hi Danette,

Colby's dad just passing thru! Nothing wrong with aiming high and wanting the best. I went to college in my early 30's after being away from schooling for 16 years. I purchased some tapes back then called ( where there's a will there's an A ). The one thing that I remember the most was they stated for you to let all your teachers no that you want the A and will work for it ( sit up front-pay attention and particapate-don't come late-don't mis class-etc ). IT WORKS!!! I graduated with a 4.0 and in a couple of my classes, all of the above had to account for that result. I actually enjoyed going up to the professors and introducing myself and stating that I wanted the A. When a mature individual approaches you in this manner, it's sincere!!! Anyway, if no lesson learned, love and prayers headed your way! Jack

Danette - You're right, I haven't been able to check my home e-mail lately. Connor hasn't had any eosinophils in a while (weeks). Right after transplant they were high for a few months. Monos in normal children rise with viruses, I think - any convenient cold or anything that could explain the increase in monos? Good luck with school, I'm sure you'll do great and I'm so happy that Jake is loving the 3yr old class.

Danette,
It is okay to cry and be scared for your son!!! You are his advocate and a darn good one. I hear the anger and fear in your voice. We will be saying extra prayers for the Power Puff Girl Cells to knock that boy cell away for good. I am home for a couple of weeks since Colby's transplant was postponed due to parainfluenza. I am here to listen and support you in any way I can. You are always there for me--THANK YOU

Danette -

I feel the terror in your journal entry. Even one boy cell is scary and you were right yesterday - it has no right to be there. You are so great at sticking up for yourself! Keep feeling what you need to feel, not apologizing for it and expressing yourself so well. My heart is breaking for what you must be feeling. We are praying for you and Jake. That boy cell will be gone next time.

WE are the honored ones - thank Jake for being a great Connor fill-in! I appreciate the prayers.

I visit your pages through Gooch's links and have not signed you guestbook before I don't think. I want you to know I was here, and I am one of those who do not understand what it is like to be a cancer parent. I have a web page for a little guy I used to take care of who has cancer and I see what his family is going through, so I know a little of what it is like but not exactly. I too read the journals of the kids on caringbridge and shed tears, wondering why it is, never having any answers. I send you prayers that you can cope and continue to re-define normal to fit your situation. Most people do not even give a thought to the families like yours, until it hits closer to them, I am one of those. I know it is very hard on the siblings as well so I will remember your older children in my prayers as well.

Danette

I know you must be terrified
stop feeling you need to dance to the beat of the drum of others who are NOT in your shoes

In the beginning its great to come online and see others in the same shoes,
and know you are not in this alone. But then, as some kids start to take a turn for the worse,
its heartbreaking and the more often it happens, the more and more depressing it is.

You dont know how many times I have told myself I need to take a break from caringbridge,
because I have come to believe ignorance truly IS bliss.

Please hang in there and try not to panic.

Danette, us cancer parents are in our own little universe. The average parent has no clue how prevalent cancer in kids is, or that it could easily be them. Its a defense mechanism, to think it only happens to other people. Well it happens to an average of 46 other people a day... unfortunately you and I and all the other wonderful people on caringbridge were among them. Its sickening to think of all these kids and all the stuff they go through, but I know no one truly understands the toll this takes unless they are in the situation themselves. We are changed forever, all of us. We just have to pray for the best.

My gosh...Can't Jake get a break! I hope this urine thing does not amount to much, but a high sugar and sugar in the urine seems concerning. Hopefully the higher WBC is a "normal" reaction to an infection in the urine (sugar in the urine makes a very inviting place for bacteria to live.). Jake's doctor visits sure keep you busy. Keep strong...see ya on the JMML site soon.

Hi my name is Diane my son Alex was diagnosed with JCML June 2000 at 4months old also reading Jacob's story really reminded me of Alex's. Alex had his transplant Sept 28,2000 and so far everything is going good we have not had any problems with GVH. We went this week for our monthly exam and we are starting to see a his thyroid counts come up to a point if they don't go down by next month he will have to be put on medication which will probably be forever.Alex's Kidney funtion deteriorated 4months ago we tried to do a GFR but they made a mistake so we have to try again sometime this month we are hoping it is not going to be worse then last time. Did Jacob have problems with the GVH from the beginning or is this a new problem. I'm really glad to see that Jacob was able to beat the JCML and We will add him and your entire family to our prayer list. Feel free to contact me if you ever just want to talk or have any questins
