YEAH!! Love to hear great news. We are so happy for you and thankful that you have shared Matthew's story with us. I think of you so often. So many times when Janie and I were in Clinic in an exam room, we would hear all sorts of commotion in the hall. Janie and I would say, "I bet that is Matthew Myers out there laughing!" Then we would peek out the room and there you two would be!! Seeing Matthew running around always made Janie smile and giggle.

You are an awesome bunch and such an inspiration to other families. Keep us updated on your family. We will forever pray for Matthew's continued health.

Wow, I can't believe it's been almost a year OT - that is so AWESOME, praise God! I wonder if the limping might just be part of growing pains. I know Ross had a lot of leg pain when he was about Matthew's age. Keeping you all in my prayers!

I'm excited. I read an update about one of favorite guys. I don't know how to help with the germs. I didn't worry about that until later years. Is he limping with running? I would get some xrays if he continues to limp. Could he pulled a muscle running? Drew had some problems with his arches. I had to make sure he had good arch supports with his soccer shoes. I found Reeboks had the best supports, but that also was about 14 years ago. Drew will be 20 this month and that is about enough to make me cry.

Now that is the kind of off treatment update I LOVE to read!! Yeaaahhhhaaawwww!!! I am so thrilled read those awesome numbers Matthew! You and my Matthew would have so much fun running races in the yard and getting grass stains all over the knees of your pants. Hey,

Let me tell you what I have been told and what I know. Holly kept bruising after treatment and the doctor told us when the veins get stronger it will be better. The veins are weak from all the chemo. I know when we were waiting for counts to start for more chemo the reds were always the last to start. Just give it time, that is probably why they judge so much on the first year. It probably takes the year to get the bone marrow working normal. I have found don't always compare to others. Everyone is so different. Hang in there!! I hope I helped.

I'm so sorry for all the sickness and that is yuck about Colin staying in Matthews hospital.

Matthew is such a hoot. I was grinning from ear to ear at getting to the end of your entry. Some of that made me think of Drew playing soccer. Drew was always on the ground falling or rolling. It use to make me so scared of getting hit with the ball sometimes those bats are worrisome too.

Boys will be boys. Matthews sounds like he is doing wonderful. Do you think Matthew can give Holly some of those platelets? She is always on the low normal side. lol

I have found out as time goes that some of our friends do relapse. It is hard, but just continue on with your faith. Don't ever let it get you down. The devil knows our weakest link. I pray for God to keep evil and tempation away from me. It gets me through the sad days of worry and doubt.

I am glad Matthew didn't need more stitches. I have all girls. I am glad his counts are staying well. It is very hard to get used to only going in once a month. I seem to panic in between time. The longest we have been able to wait though has been about 2 1/2 weeks. Katia always seems to get sick or have to go in for the bruising she is experiencing. The time before last when we went to the clinic, we saw this teenage boy who has AML also. He has relapsed about 4 times and had 3 BMT. Now there is nothing anyone can do. I hadn't seen him since September and when I saw him, he had lost so much weight, he was very pale and his beautiful smile wasn't there. His mom looked so frail also. It is very hard seeing the pain these families are facing especially when your own pain seems to be so tremendous! There have been so many kids to lose this battle lately but we really try to remain positive. I will be praying for your family as well as the families at all the clinics. Maybe little Matthew will begin to like sitting and coloring (lol) :)

Myers Curse huh?

Well being a Myers, I can relate! Jordan (he's now 11) had a set of stitches and a set of staples in his forehead by the time he was 4! First time he fell against an end table and had to have stitches. 2nd time his sister (who is now 17) threw a plastic watergun at him and hit him in the forehead. He had to have staples that time. Fun fun fun! (are we related???? LOL) Jordan was fine with it MOM was not. They were going to staple my baby without deadening it first. Oh no, not a good idea. I politely told the little nurse that if the doctor came at my baby with the staple gun that I would take it way and make patterns on HIS forehead. Doc came in and asked what the problem was and I told him no problem just that if he didn't deaden my son's forehead first that HE would have staples in hise forehead. Needless to say mom won that round. Hee hee. I think he knew I was very very serious. No matter that I was about a foot shorter than he was. I would have had NO trouble stapling him. LOL

I read your son's story and am so glad he is currently in remission.
Our daughter was diagnosed with AML April of 2002 so although we are not new to this, you have been dealing with this for quite sometime.

I know exactly how you feel. It isn't easy for me to tell you this but just relax. It was very hard for me too. The fear factor is always there even the faith in God being so strong. We were told about the bruises the veins are weak from all the chemo that has gone through them. Holly still bruises after almost 20 months off treatment. I think some people are just more sensitive then others. We did alot the first year cbc's that wasn't needed. I tell you do them. It will make you feel better and sleep better at night. We as parents know our children better than anybody. I am alot better just give yourself time. Don't let anybody medical make you feel uncomfortable about the way you feel either. The medical staff treats our children, but they don't live with the fear as a parent.

Thanks for coming by Holly's site.

I hope and pray Matthew doesn't have problems as long as Holly has. I truly feel like she needs a break. I think there has been something every month. She is getting so tired of feeling poorly all the time. With raising a normal healthy child first, I know what is common and what isn't just like Matthew with a older brother. Everything gets so dramatic with Holly nothing seems to go easy. She still continues to keep going and going and going.

Is Matthew starting to feel better after his last illness? I hope he is feeling great and loving school. You and family have alot to be Thankful for this Thanksgiving.

Wow, I don't like the sound of that awful news. I know that must of been yucky for Matthew and Colin. I hope Matthew does feel good for his party. What a bummer to feel bad. I remember Holly being 3 antibiotics last year for the same ear infection. The doctors will learn what works the best. Holly's did. Our doctor finally started putting her on the oral forms of the antibiotics the hospital always used. It finally seemed to start working. You may want to ask for Z-pack if that is what is working until the body gets used to that antibiotic. Praying for his strength to continue and for God's infinite grace for Mom and Dad.

Oh my...."the liquid sound of rushing barf!!" ...I hope that now you can look back and think it is funny. Oh Matthew, That isn't fun to start running fever when it is time to celebrate, Buddy. That is a bummer.

Mom and Dad, I feel it is normal. Those fevers are going to come. He is just building back that immune system. That system has been hit so hard for 2 1/2 years or so. Holly first year was about every month some type of fever. Hang in there and I like the 85% better too.

Strep throat before you leave for Orlando??!! Whuz up with that? Jenn--You are an incredible mom to catch it and have him (and yourself) :o) tested BEFORE leaving! Good JOB! Hi Myers Family....only a few more hours to go!!!! I'm so excited!! And I guess little Sarah Anne is too because I think she's still awake in her bed. She should be good & tired in the morning. I'm not sure if the TV crew thing was a good idea. Maybe you should have told them no thanks. What if when we get there our kids go crazy?? What if Sarah Anne & Matthew take off running down the runway? I guess we'll be the ones who have to chase them down. And with security the way it is, there's no telling what might happen. Maybe they'll be so tired they won't run far.

Anyway, I'm so excited about our trip & feel very lucky to be going with you guys. How cool is that??? And to be celebrating Matthew's last shot too!!! So wonderful!!

Hey,

Counting down to end of treatment and Walt Disney World. Hip Hip Hooray!!!! One little helpful hint, they have a parents night out at GKTW. They have babysitting for the children. So pack some nice clothes for mom and dad. They don't tell you this or our Make A Wish chapter didn't. We had another family tell us so I am passing the word. They also give gifts everyday at GKTW. So take a extra luggage to pack everything extra going home. I had to make a WalMart run which is right down the road. Have Fun!!!

You guys are gonna have SO much fun in Disney! We had a hard time seeing it all since our kids are so far apart in ages (not too far but a 14 yr old wants to do different things than a 5 and 9 yr old) The Give Kids the World Village where you will likely stay is absolutely awesome. I have yet to see anyone give it any negative remarks. The people there are so helpful and nice. Its a place where you would love to vacation, nevermind Disney! I am so glad things are going well, and you tell that teacher with all Matthew has been thru he can talk all he wants in my book!

Why Us?

Most women become a mother by accident, some by choice, a few by habit. Did you ever wonder how mothers of children with cancer are chosen?

Somehow, I visualize God hovering over the earth selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As he observes, he instructs his angels to make notes in a giant ledger...

"Armstrong, Beth, son, patron saint Matthew."
"Forrest, Marjorie, daughter, patron saint Cecilia"
"Rutledge, Carrie, twins, patron saint Gerard. He's used to profanity."

Finally, he passes a name to an angel and says, "Give her a child with cancer." The angel is curious. "Why this one, God? She's so happy."

"Exactly," smiles God. "Could I give a child with cancer a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel."

"But does she have patience?" asks the angel.

"I don't want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she will handle it."

"I watched her today," said God. "She has that feeling of self-independence that is so rare and necessary in a mother. You see, the child I'm going to give her has it's own world. She has to make it live in her world and that's not going to be easy."

"But Lord, I don't think she believes in you," said the angel. "No matter. I can fix that. This one is perfect. She has just enough selfishness."

The angel gasps, "Selfishness? Is that a virtue?"

God nods, "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes, here is a woman I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take anything her child does for granted. She will never consider a single step ordinary. I will permit her to see clearly the things I see...ignorance, cruelty, prejudice...and allow her to rise above them."

"And what about her patron saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in mid-air.

God smiles and says,..."A mirror will suffice."

Emma will be done with treatment the end of August and will be getting her port out around the end of the year.....she is also a little leary to have it out, she says she will miss it!!! Congratulations on the port removal! Wow, that REALLY makes it seem like things are coming to an end, doesn't it? My daughter though still request it to be put back in ! LOL she does not like the blood draws, she also said similiar things about it being part of her so I guess they become very dependent on them.... I pray all continues to go well for you!!!

I am just so happy for you all and I give thanks to our Father in Heaven. It is so neat to read about Matthew's energy!!! I hear kids off chemo have TONS! I hate it that his ANC is down so low. It's like a viscious cycle. To get get rid of a virus or infection you need increased an ANC but to get an increased ANC you have to get rid of the virus or infection. It's a which came first the chicken or the egg. I hope he gets through this with no more scares. I think it must be the season for all the ailments, Jackie's been getting an ear infection couple days after we quit the antibiotics, fifth time in a row. You're in our prayers.

I am sorry to hear that Matthews counts are down. Emma had a similar episode just a few weeks ago. Her ANC got down to 170 and it took about 3 weeks until it went up to only 500. We will keep your family in our prayers, and pray that his counts will go up and no Bone Marrow Aspiration is needed. Take care and know you are in our prayers.

Hey Guys,

I am so shocked at your update. Just relax, it is probably just a bad virus. The platelets are fine. I can't really say about the HGB, because Holly's was always fine. Remember there was never any mention of blasts in the CBC. I know I'm a good one to talk. I worry every time Holly has a fever. So I'm just talking about experience here. Until the doctor tells to worry lets just put it in the greatest physician hands. We will trust God that Matthew has just a bad virus. Love you guys, I'll pray for you guys to rest and have peace, too.

Hey Guys,

I can't believe his counts are still falling! I feel so much better when you mentioned his platelets and RBC are not decreasing like the WBC. That is a very positive sign that he is just experiencing a weird drop in his ANC. I hope he is able to stay fever free and stay out of the hsopital. We love you guys and if there is anything we can do please don't think twice about asking. Ugh! Even in the last months this journey isn't an easy one. Please let us know if anything changes!!!!

Oh God,
Jen you KNOW I have been there.
Ron's counts were all normal (for our kids at least!)
but the darn ANC kept drpping for three weeks. you know we also went thru the "rule out a relapse" BMA too, and it terrified me. I KNOW the shoes you are in now. Even thogugh ANC dropped for 3 weeks while off all chemo, it suddenly went from 312 to 3200. You know how fast these can fluctuate. We are having another BMA done July 3rd just to play it safe, and the fear has started up ALL over again on me. PLEASE try to stay calm and not jump to conclusions (I know, it didnt work for me when people told me that either..!)

I am so sorry to read all the stressful situations. I will be praying for Matthew to feel better and for mom and dad, too. I know how you feel just remember things will get back to norm soon. Matthew could just be getting the spring time flu. Holly always felt really bad when the counts was bottomed out. With him getting the chemo with the ANC already low, he'll probably have a 0 and stay low for awhile. (Just my thoughts.) With AML, they always had to hit the blood system so hard. if it is ANY consolation AT ALL
we had ambulatory once
they did blood work
took him in for spinal & kick off of maintenance
and THEN blood work came back WAY TOO LOW
we ended up having to delay chemo a week or so
(I forget to tell you the truth, it was 1 or 2 weeks, then last Aug a month straight, now we are on 3rd week off again currently) Keep us informed and good luck!

I cant even begin to imagine the journey you must have been on these past two years. As I look at Trent as he just turned two this past month and I think about how Matthew was diagnosed just before his second birthday it just makes my heart ache. They just seem so fragile at such a young age. Matthew is a real "trooper" for having to fight such an ugly disease. I guess you could nickname him the "Terminator" for having terminated the Leukemia from his body... Anyway, I know all of you must be looking forward to a big vacation once it is all over. I don't know anything about those bad days. Holly didn't have to experience any of that. What I have read from
my favorite buddies it is rough.

I just noticed 25 more weeks. Alright!! I know it must be feeling great. I had this great feeling until the first ache and fever hit. The great feeling comes back fast when the doctor tells you it is just a normal child thing. I'll start praying now for the off treatment fears. Jesus has always given me something to be so thankful about. I know he is going to do the same in Matthews life. Count your Blessings indeed.

Thank you for the note, it meant so much to me. I pray the prayer of Jabez. I feel that the lives we have touched through this journey is God enlarging my ministries. Your family and strong faith has touched my life. With Jesus all things are possible.

Praying for Matthew for total body healing. I have been studing on long term effects. It is from one thing to the next from studing everything about leukemia to now studing everything about chemos. That is so important to me for Total Body Healing.

I wish we could start the count down till "last treatment" but it is still a bit too far away for us- (Nov 2003). I am glad to see that you are continuing your good health. Wesley only had trouble with his port once- when he was on a high dose of steroids. The TPA worked absolutely awesome for us too--and we have never had to repeat it since then. Well, Matthew, we're almost on the plane for Dublin! It seems like just yesterday when I first met you and your mom at Dave's Pizza in Homewood for the kickoff party to our training and our fundraising. This whole summer has really changed my life, Matthew, and I wanted to thank you for being so strong and reinforcing to me exactly what's important in life. I wish that I could raise 5000 more dollars and run a million marathons if it can help put us one step closer to making you 100%. I've got to tell you that my knee has suffered during our training this summer. In fact, I'm going to have to get it scoped when we come back from Ireland, but I'm going to do my best in the marathon and finish the race! Our whole team is thinking about you, and I just wanted to write a quick note to let you know that we're still on task and will be thinking about you the whole way. We definitely need to see about another Chuck E Cheese outing when everything settles down so that we can share some pictures from our trip overseas. Until then, keep growing up and having fun...that's what life's all about, right?
