Hi Grandma Pat. It has been a while since I last posted but this latest news (7 October) is excellent and I think we should tell the world, which I will do, if you don't mind. I have just returned from a visit to various brain tumour conferences in Oregon and Berlin and will be speaking in Taipei (Taiwan) at the end of this month where I will certainly tell the patients and families of your news. Best wishes. Denis Strangman, Chair, International Brain Tumour Alliance.

Hi Grandma Pat! We loved seeing you and Grandpa Jimmy at Christmas. It was a very special Christmas for us, as it was Lilli's first. As everyone opened their gifts, it was so nice for me to be able to watch and reflect on how life is changing... how all of us grandkids (inlaw included) :) are growing up and how sweet the little ones are. I cant believe how grown Rebecca already seems, as well as Shaun, and even little Lilli. Of course, as you say... you always knew you were a "GREAT grandma!" I found a good quote today...

"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning to dance in the rain."

Hi Grandma Pat. What an amazing story. You are an inspiration! We had a successful international brain tumour awareness week (21-27 October)this year and will organise a similar one in 2008 (26 October - 1 November). See: www.theibta.org Happy Christmas to you and your family.

Hi Grandma Pat. I haven't signed in quite some time, so I just wanted to say hello. I truly enjoyed seeing you at Christmas ~ you looked wonderful! Johnathan and I have been enjoying married life, and my first year of teaching has been challenging but rewarding (half way over). This year was quite busy with graduations, our new jobs, our wedding, babies, and the health of Johnathan's dad. Our hearts and lives have gone from emotional rollercoaster highs and lows this year... but I wouldnt trade that for anything. We have been growing together for over five years, and have officially became a family. The rest of our families have grown alot in the past year or two, and have made us all closer. You are part of that, Grandma Pat, and we love you lots. I always leave you with a quote - and I sometimes find them in the wierdest places. This one is from a Nike Shoes ad, and (if you can get past the initial cornyness) is pretty true.

"Life isn't about keeping score. It's not about how many people call you and it's not about who you've dated, are dating, or haven't dated at all. It isn't about who you've kissed, what sport you play, or which guy or girl likes you. It's not about your shoes or your hair or the colour of your skin or where you live or go to school. In fact, it's not about grades, money, clothes, or colleges that accept you or not. Life isn't about if you have lots of friends, or if you are alone, and it's not about how accepted or unaccepted you are. Life just isn't about that. But life is about who you love and who you hurt. It's about how you feel about yourself. It's about trust, happiness, and compassion. It's about sticking up for your friends and replacing inner hate with love. Life is about avoiding jealousy, overcoming ignorance, and building confidence. It's about what you say and what you mean. It's about seeing people for who they are and not what they have. Most of all, it is about choosing to use your life to touch someone else's in a way that could never have been achieved otherwise. These choices are what life's about."-- Nike ad

Hi Grandma Pat

Missed out on those apple pies again! I see the State Fair has been on. I was in the US again last month but I need an excuse to get to your area and say Hello. This time I went to NY, Chicago, San Francisco and Toronto. You can follow my journey here: www.theibta.org We have selected 21-27 October 2007 for the inaugural International Brain Tumor Awareness Week - that gives you 12 months to plan something special to help us celebrate it! Hey Grandma Pat! I was very glad that you were at the wedding!! (read the back of the program, in case no one mentioned it) :) Johnathan and I just got back from our honeymoon today, and it was great! I am sitting here right now trying not to be too nervous about teaching kindergarten tomorrow - as it is my first day of teaching ever! I hope the kids like me! :) Anyways, we love you lots, and miss you already!

Hi Melodie and "Grandma Pat" Thanks for signing the guestbook on my website. I love hearing from long-term survivors, and I am so glad to here you are doing well. God can work miracles in our lives, and you are proof of that. I am about 21/2 years on my journey, tumor free. I work full-time and have been off of all meds for nearly two months. Outside of fatigue once in a while, I feel pretty good. It sounds like your feeling well also. Praise God! Please take care of yourself, and we'll keep you in our prayers.

Hi Grandma Pat, I just wanted to share something with you and everyone who reads your website: make sure you tell those you care about that you love them every day. Yesterday, I was in the copy room talking to a very sweet first grade teacher that I have bus duty with each day. Neither she, nor I had any idea that at that very moment, her husband (while driving to work) had a heart attack and caused him to have an accident. He died. She was visited by two policemen here at school yesterday shortly after I saw her, and taken to the hospital to recieve the news. I heard the news this morning during our teacher's meeting. I still am so shocked that it really happenned to her. You just never know what might happen or who you might affect. I love you lots! Love, Kristi

Hi Grandma Pat
My name is Tony Farmer. I work with Wendy at Pitney Bowes. Two and a half weeks ago, we found out that my wife Melissa has breast cancer. Wendy is a close friend and over the last couple of weeks she has been a shoulder I have leaned on. What a wonderful person she is. Know that the experiences your family has deal with over the last few years has allowed Wendy to give me much needed advise and strength. Wendy has sent Melissa and I two fish that we will have in our posession from this day forward. Know also in your heart that the grace and power of our God has been passed on through Wendy to others that face some (certainly not all) of the struggles you have face over the last few years. My Prayers are with you and your family.
Sincerely Tony Farmer

Thats okay, I am looking forward to seeing you this upcoming weekend at J's graduation. I found my wedding dress (yay!) and my invitations, and Johnathan and I just set a date for the wedding today. I miss you lots, cant wait to see you next weekend, and am ready for this week to be over. I hope all is well with you. Hi Grandma Pat. It was good to see you this weekend at the fair. I know you are probably glad its over though. I found this quote, and like it alot. Anyways, love you, Kristi....
"One day someone's loved one died.
And on that clear, cold morning, in the warmth of their bedroom, they
were struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any
more. No more hugs, no more phone calls. Sometimes what we care about
the most goes away, never to return before we can say goodbye. So while
we can, its best we love, care, fix it when its broken, and take care
of it when its sick. This is true for marriage, friends, and family.
And children with bad report cards, dogs with bad hips, and aging
parents and grandparents. We keep them because theyre worth it, and we
cherish them. Some things we keep - like a best friend who moved away
or a classmate we grew up with. There are just some things that make us
happy, no matter what. Life is important, and so are the people we know
- so keep them close, and say I love you."

Hi Grandma Pat,
Debie here from Australia, I signed your guestbook on 8th August 05. Just wanted to share some good news with you and your family. My mum, Pam, had her 1st MRI this week. She had surgery 1st May 05 on GBM. The Doctors were pretty pleased. There are marks on her brain but they suggest that it is surgery and ray damage, not tumour. She looks great the last two weeks and seems to be doing a little more as time goes by. God Bless.

Hi Grandma Pat. Johnathan and I are doing pretty good. I just wanted to send you this quote that I found, its called "A winner's Creed"... (have a good night, love, me)... "If you think you are beaten, you are; If you think you dare not, you dont; If you'd like to win, but think you cant, Its almost a cinch you wont. If you think you'll lose, youre lost; for out in the world we find success begins with a person's will, It's all in the state of mind. Life's battles don't always go to the stronger or faster hand; but sooner or later the person who wins is the one who thinks I CAN."

SUMMER SCHOOL's over on Friday!!! yay. Well, we love you lots. I just thought I'd leave you this cute quote I found: (I had to read it about three times before getting it, lol). "it doesn't happen all at once...You become. It takes a long time. Thats why it doesn't happen to people who break easily or have sharp edges. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

Hey grandma Pat. I havent sent you a poem in a long time, and I like this one alot. Love you bunches! "To let go isnt to forget, not think about, or ignore. It doesnt leave feelings of anger or jealousy or regret. Letting go isnt winning and it isnt losing. Its not about pride and its not about how u appear, and its not obsessing or dwelling on the past. Letting go isnt blocking memories or thinking sad thoughts and doesnt leave emptiness, hurt or sadness. Its not giving in or giving up. Letting go isnt about loss and its not defeat. To let go is to cherish memories, but to overcome and to move on. It is having an open mind and confidence in the future. Letting go is accepting. It is learning and experiencing and growing. To let go is to be thankful for the experiences that made u laugh, made u cry and made u grow. Its about all that you have, all that you had and all that you will soon gain. Letting go is having the courage to accept change, and the strength to keep moving. It is realizing that the heart can sometimes be the most potent remedy. To let go is to open a door, to clear a path and to set yourself free..." ~ author unknown

Hi Grandma Pat! How are you? I hope you are doing well! Johnathan and I are staying busy... we both have work, and I have summer school - at least the campus is really beautiful in the summer. I'm at the computer lab in between classes right now, procrastinating writing a paper - they keep the workload coming in the summer, but I enjoy getting a class or two out of the way in just 5 weeks. We hope to see you eventually... it seems like forever, but Johnathan only has off of work on Saturdays and that makes it hard to come to Raleigh. This weekend we are hoping to meet Johnathans parents in Charlotte for father's day. Next week will be my last week of summer school, and I think that Wendy (& Melodie?) had mentioned coming up the weekend of the 24th - it would be nice to see them and the kids - maybe you could come! Well, that is what is happenning with us. You are always in our prayers and keep checkin your mailbox! :)

Anyways, we are supposed to get up to 8 inches of snow tonight starting at midnight - keep your fingers crossed that App will cancel classes tomorrow so we dont have to go to school in the snow! Thursday we are supposed to get 6 or more inches on top of this snow! I'm ready for Spring and Easter, how about you? Hi Grandma Pat. So much for "unseasonably warm weather," its about 6 degrees here right now with a wind chill of -30...brrr! Its nice not to have school today, and due to the icy roads and weather, I dont have work either. However, I'm used to being up early for class so here I am. Plus, Johnathan came in here this morning and asked me to help him turn all the faucets on so the pipes dont freeze... the heat upstairs is broke, so we have been turning on a bunch of little heaters to try to stay warm!Johnathan has 16 hours of class, and I have 17... so we stay pretty busy. But, I'd like to go skiing sometime soon now that it has snowed last night (not today though... tooo cold!) Johnathan talked to Wendy, Summer, and Spencer yesterday on the phone. :) Summer told Johnathan that she and Spencer had played clue yesterday with Wendy and Melodie... and that Wendy won, so Johnathan convinced her that Wendy cheated. :) Haha. Anyways, we miss you and love you lots! I hope you and Grandpa Jimmy are doing well. Love, Kristi (and Johnathan)

Hey Grandma Pat! How are you doing? We are having alot of fun up here in NYC!! It was really cool to see the statue of liberty from the airplane yesterday! Times Square was a madhouse last night, but lots of fun. We were trying to get someone to take our picture last night in times square, and nobody would listen or take it... so Johnathan yells, "We're not asking for Money, we just want someone to take our picture!!" (it was hilarious!!) so, then these nice people took our picture (and then asked US if we had any money, haha). We also went into the famous "Virgin Records" store right there. Anndd... something I noticed here is that it seems like everyone stands really close to the edge of the subway platform (not me!!)... and noone seems to think its a bad idea. We are really close to Madison avenue ;) (we are off of park avenue and 24th street). You just dont realize how much walking you do by the end of the day. Well we are gettin ready to go to Soho and Greenwich Village today because they are supposed to be really neat areas (cobblestone streets, etc.)... Yesterday it took Johnathan awhile to figure out that everytime someone honked up here, to not turn around and wave because it IS NOT a friend from Boone honkin at you. LOL. Anyways, I'd better go, Johnathans in the shower, and I need to finish up gettin ready. We are sooo excited about seeing you and everyone at Christmas and we love you bunches!!!

Hi Grandma Pat. How are you doing? I am so glad that you came up with Johnathan's parents. I am looking forward to seeing you again at Christmas. Johnathan and I put christmas lights on his porch, and tree in his front yard last night and we saw a handful of flurries! The temperature has dropped quite a bit in the last two weeks, and I'm sure it will drop just as much in the next two weeks. Tonight its so foggy and rainy that you cant hardly see your hand in front of your face. However, earlier today it was all clear and I keep trying to tell Johnathan that I think I saw a bear cub in the woods beside my apartment... he thinks I was hallucinating. Ha ha. I am in the computer lab right now because this is our last full week of class (lots of projects due) and next week starts our finals. So, I'd better get back to work. Hey Grandma Pat. How are you doing? I'm pretty good. We just got into the full swing of school this week - finally our senior year! I'm just hanging out for a little bit while Johnathan and his roommates play paintball in the woods behind their house. I took a picture of them - they look like they were ready for war! Haha. I hope you are doing well, and I love you lots! I thought this was a cool quote: "People take different roads seeking fulfillment and happiness. Just because they're not on your road doesn't mean they've gotten lost." Have a good night!

Hey Grandma Pat. How are you doing? I hope you had a great fourth of July! The fireworks up here echo off the mountains and sound like thunder. Johnathan and I just started our second session of summer school this week. We are volunteering to help animals get adopted tomorrow... and I think we get to do it at the Doc Watson Festival. It should be alot of fun. There is a bobcat that lives around Johnathans house and it ran right past my leg tonight!! Then, we just came back to Johnathans house, and we saw it run out of the yard again! I am NOT a cat person! haha. I hope you are doing well, and I love you lots! I heard this quote and thought you might like it: "The pieces fall into place eventually, so until then laugh at the confusion and live for the moment." Anyways, have a great day!

Johnathan and I are doing good. We went camping last weekend, and I believe that might be the first day of the entire summer that it has not rained up here!! Anyways, we love you lots. Have a good day! :)

Hey Grandma Pat. Happy Mother's Day! I hope you are doing well. Johnathan and I will be coming to see you on Friday. We are enjoying our small break from school (summer classes start May 25th). It's so beautiful at the beach right now ~ having just gotten done with final exams I am really appreciating it. I have recently learned what it means to trust God to see you through whatever obstacles come your way... and I just wanted to remind you that He gives us His promise to be faithful to us and there when we need Him most. I love you lots... have a great day. Hey Grandma Pat. I was just sitting here with Johnathan watchin TV, and I got the strongest urge to come check on you and write to you. :) It is so wonderful that your blood counts are better this week, and that they are going to hold off on the bone marrow thing!! I was just reading through the journal entries from the beginning, and I realized how much you have been through... and OVERCOME! You are steadily progressing, and have a peace that just radiates from you!!! We ALL love you so much, and are so glad that you are doing so well. Luke 11:9,10 - "And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh recieveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened."

It has been unbelievably cold up here... the other morning I went to class and it was 9 degrees, but the wind made it feel like -15. BRRR! Hi Ms Pat.... My name is fran and we are a family at RCA.We have three sons that attend RCA and we also go to Free Will.
Matter of fact my son Joshua was at your booth with Madison this year. She is a wonderful young lady. I just wanted to "Amen" to the wise statements you have made. Our son Jonathan is 9 years old and he has been diagnosed on Oct 13th with "Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia". We take everyday now more as a blessing then we have ever. We are in His peace I do believe because of
all the wonderful folks that have included Jonathan in their prayers.
Take care.....and your testimony will be a blessing to whomever reads it... www.caringbridge.org nc/jonathan

CONGRATULATIONS!!! That's great news!
Sorry to have missed you at the Angels Among Us walk, if you were there. We did look for you. We spent the first 18hs. of our trip in the Duke ER. My daugher Megan had a cyst on her ovary and was in quite a bit of pain. When we arrived, we droped our luggage at the hotel and headed to the ER. I'm happy to report that she is doing well now.
What would a trip to Duke be without a trip to the ER?!
I pray that all continues to go well.

Hey Grandma Pat, I found this poem, and I thought that it might be comforting to anyone who is in this situation right now...
"No Tears Past The Gate"...
"Someone new has entered
our eternal home above ~
the heavenly gate has opened wide
to welcome one you love.
We cannot help the tears that fall-
our hearts need time to grieve
when earthly life has ended
and a loved one has to leave.
Yet even in the saddest time,
we know our Savior lives,
and we can trust completely
in the promise that He gives~
that in a glad reunion with the Lord
our loves one wait
to welcome us in joy
with no more tears
beyond the gate!"

Hey Grandma Pat! This week is finally over, and so begin my finals... but first, Thanksgiving! One of my favorite things are the pictures that Anne Geddes takes of new born babies. I love babies, and so this is especially precious to me. One of the quotes I found on an ecard was this "There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle." (by Albert Einstein) They have this picture beside that quote, and the picture is of a teeny tiny preemie baby laying on its side in between someones hands. It is soo cute! Anyways, i hope that you have a good day! Love, Kristi :)

Hey Grandma Pat! How are you today? I hope you are doing good. I am looking forward to seeing you on Thanksgiving! I just wanted to let you know about something...The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "Fund Free Mammograms" for free (pink window in the middle). (There is nothing to sign up for and no cost to you.) The corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate a mammogram in exchange for advertising. Here's the website - Pass it along to all your friends!! www.thebreastcancersite.com Thanks!!! I miss you alot, and good luck finding the MRI's!!! See ya in a week!! :) smile!

So, my doctor wants me to have an MRI done of my brain and spinal cord this sunday at 4. I am not really looking forward to it, but thats ok i guess. Its too bad that we missed each other at the fair. I wish that I would have been able to see you. Johnathan will be home a week from today. Its been a month since he has been home, so we will try to come see you. Have a good day. Love, Kristi :)

Hey Grandma Pat! I am glad to hear that you got to go to the fair some this year!!! I will also remember to pray for Brenda. It's less than two months til christmas! I registered for my Spring Semester classes at wake tech today, and I will have my associates degree by the end of the summer... soooo hopefully i will be accepted to go to appalachian in the fall. It was a really rough month, and I am glad to see it go. :) I hope that this month will be better, and I am praying that you will continue to do well. I love you lots!

Hey... I meant to include this poem in my entry a minute ago, sooo here it is: (i hope you like it :)... "An angel kissed my tears away today when I was sad. I wasn't feeling quite myself, my day had been so bad. I felt a warmth brush by me that quickly dried my tears; A gentle, kind, and loving touch that seemed to hold me near. Immediately, I felt so much better and the day seemed brighter, too. I guess thats just the way you feel when an Angel comforts you."

Hey Grandma Pat. I was hoping to see you at the fair booth this weekend, but I didnt. Hopefully I will see you sometime soon. Johnathan MIGHT come home this upcoming weekend, and then we would go to the fair again with my family if he did that, so hopefully you will be there and that will all work out. If not, I will see you soon, cuz whenever Johnathan does come home I would reallly like to go to Hill Ridge Farms and pick out a pumpkin and then we could stop by your house. I hope that you are doing good. My head hurts, so I am gonna go lay down, but I hope you are good. LOVE, Kristi

Hey Grandma Pat! wanna know something funny? I got my hair colored and the lady called my mom over there and showed her that I had ten or more Gray Hairs!! I am only 19 years old!! lol. She said if I had a rough week then thats probably what they came from and that it will go away when the hair regrows. :P Anyways, I liked your quote Mrs. Long (about looking up at heaven). Grandma Pat, maybe me and Johnathan can come see you and maybe everyone would want to go to Hill Ridge Farms. (yes, i KNOW its a little Kid thing to do, but I still like it :) I will see you soon, LOVE You (mean it) ~ Kristi

Hey Grandma Pat! How are you doing? I am doing better than I was, thats for sure. First, the baby went home last night, and he is soo much better! That is a miracle, because he was sooo very sick that we almost lost him. And, I had found out from Appalachian that I cant get in until I take these two science courses here next semester, so I will reapply and go this fall after I get my associates degree here. I was REALLY upset, but its alright. Johnathans mom told me that it is ok, because they did Not tell me that I cant come,.. just not right yet. So, I hope that you are doing good. I am excited about the fair. School is hard, (I am taking alot of hours and working) but I try not to stress out about it too much. Johnathan will be home for a couple days for fall break on Wednesday night, so that is definitely the hightlight of my month so far! I miss him alot, and I have had a rough couple of weeks without him here, so seeing him should really help alot. Well, i miss you and I hope that we can come see you. Love, Kristi

Hi. Good news on the baby. He was only at Duke for two days, in which he improved drastically. He was taken off of the breathing machine and oxygen, and he is actually being given half an ounce of food now!! They just transported him back to the NICU at Raleigh Comm. He had pneumonia for sure , and maybe a couple of infections, but he is doing so much better. Thanks for your prayers, hopefully he will only be in there for a week or so. Love, Kristi

Hey, well, we have a slight improvement with the baby. He is on a breathing machine, and he was on 100% oxygen, but they have lowered the oxygen level some..and, they can tell by his monitor that he is trying to breathe a little on his own also. But please continue to pray for him. thanks, love, kristi

Hey Grandma Pat. How are you today? Well, I just wanted to ask you to pray for my nephew ~ Kade. He was transported from Raleigh Comm. Hospital to Duke today, and is "Critically Ill" as they put it. I just got back from visiting him. He is fighting for his life, so please keep him in your prayers. Well, I am gonna go to bed cuz I promised Johnathan that I would go to bed as soon as possible. Just talking to him on the phone is soothing right now. I love you. I'll keep you posted. Love, Kristi

Hey Grandma Pat. How are you doing? I became an aunt for the second time tonight, ... when my nephew Kaden Romito was born at 9pm ~ weighing 8 pounds, and 9 ounces (he was only an once smaller than I was). He is pretty healthy I think, however, they are keeping in the NICU for a few days.If I am ever sad about something, being around a sweet child seems to help, and I guess God knew just what I needed because I have been able to play with Kaden's older brother Karson all afternoon. He is precious. My brother, Karson, and I were all sitting there eating dinner at the hospital and Kris asked Karson who my boyfriend is (because Karson Loves Johnathan!) Well, Karson always says Johnathan is my boyfriend, but tonight it was so sweet... he said "Me!" and "I love her sooo much!" lol. Well, I am gonna go to bed. Tomorrow is work instead of school. I love you and I hope to see you soon when my life stops the tornado that it is in right now. Love, Kristi

Hey Grandma Pat. I went searching for inspirational christian poems tonight, and I found one that suits
me well at the moment. I hope that you are doing great, and maybe you will like this too....(Love, Kristi)

FRIENDLY OBSTACLES

For every hill I’ve had to climb,
For every stone that bruised my feet,
For all the blood and sweat and grime,
For blinding storms and burning heart,
My heart sings but a grateful song -
These were the things that made me strong!

For all the heartaches and the tears,
For all the anguish and the pain,
For gloomy days and fruitless years,
And for the hopes that lie in vain,
I do give thanks for now I know
These were the things that helped me grow!

‘Tis not the softer things of life
Which stimulates man’s will to strive;
But bleak adversity and strife
Do most to keep man’s will alive,
O’er rose-strewn paths the weaklings creep
But brave hearts dare to climb the steep.

Hey Grandma Pat! You looked pretty and seemed to be in good spirits yesterday. I hope to see you again soon. I usually give you a poem or a quote, so this time I think that I am gonna give you one that Johnathan picked out and framed beside our picture. I have looked at it so many times that I have got it memorized... it goes like this: ~My Friend~
"I'd like to build the perfect friend, someone whose minded strong. The face of an angel she would have and hair that's very long. I'd make her smile light up the room, put twinkles in her eyes. Her voice would shame the sweetest song, and laughter lift the skies. She'd always be considerate, sensitive and kind. She'd be the first to lend a hand when others fall behind. Integrity would be her strength to make her follow through. If I look just close enough that perfect friend is you." ~ It's one of my favorites! Love, Kristi

Hey Grandma Pat. How are you doing today? I hope that you arent too upset about having to go to the doctor. I had school and work today, so I am kinda tired. I am very excited to see Johnathan this weekend!!!! It will be fun if we can have him a birthday cookout. I am still a little worried about my great grandma cuz they postponed her surgery for her cancer that she was supposed to have the other day because they wanted to make sure that her pathologist could be there. I cant believe its been a whole Year since Sept. 11, its so sad. It was my Aunt's 40th birthday of all days! Anyways, I Hope that you are feeling ok... i will talk to you soon. PS ~ I heard this quote in my speech class, and it helps me to have to get through some every day tough things, maybe you will like it ~ "If it were easy, Everybody would do it." ~ Love, Kristi ~

Just a quick note to let you all know that I am still around. Forgive me for not having replied to the personal note from Wanda following my brother's passing. Wanda, I currently don't have home access to a computer -- right now, I'm at the public library. I have returned to my home in Wisconsin after having spent the past year with my brother Bob, Mary Clare, and their girls in Ohio. I so appreciate your kind words and thoughts! I know Mary Clare wrote last week. She mentioned the "numbness" that she feels -- I also have a degree of that! My father passed away in Ohio also -- a month and a day following Bob's death. I feel very blessed that I was able to spend the past year with both my brother and my father! I know I have not processed all that has happened this past year, but I do know that I will be forever a changed person. I hope that God's blessings have made me a stronger person, a more compassionate person, and one who is thankful every day for being alive. Grandma Pat, you of course continue to be in my prayers. I'm actually praying for your entire family! May God give you continued strength in your journey! You all are one of the blessings that God has bestowed upon me this past year!

Hi Grandma Pat. You looked beautiful yesterday. I am having a rough weekend, so I am just going to leave you with a quote, ok? It's by John Greenleaf Whittier:

Grandma Pat,
It's wonderful that you are doing so well. I check in every so often to see how you and the family are doing. My mom is still doing good and is determined to get out of her wheel chair (my dad won't take her to the movies until she is). Take care, and I'm still praying for you and your family. Dear Wanda, grandma Pat and family,

Please forgive me for not having sent a greeting before now. I know that my sister-in-law, Monica, communicated with you and she kept me informed. I am just now getting around to doing some things that I haven't had time to do in the past several months.
I am trying very hard to cope with the death of my beloved husband, Bob...one day at a time, one baby step at a time.
I miss him terribly.
Grandma Pat, you have been on my prayer list ever since Monica found your site. I rejoice in your good health and progress. I will continue to pray for you and your family and to monitor your site.
Thank you for keeping us in your prayers and your kind expression of sympathy.
God Bless, Mary Clare Hurt

Glad to hear that all of you were able to go, even if it did get a little stressful..you will always have those "mental-stress pictures" to laugh about for years to come. hey....how is everything going?? school is almost out and then i should be able to possibly see everyone this summer (those of you that i know)!!! i usually don't get much "say so" in everything, but i do want to say thanks to everyone for donations and thoughts. it is really encouraging to see my mom (Wanda) and my grandma (Pat) so excited. thanks again for everything that everyone has done. even if you didn't or couldn't give a donation, just the thoughts and prayers make all the difference. MAY GODS WILL BE DONE!!!

Hi Everyone, This is Wendy, GrandmaPat's Middle Daughter. I feel like I have to identify myself because I don't help with the web site very much.

I just wanted to Thank Everyone for helping us raise Funds for the Duke BTC. Mom was so interested to hear all about it when we returned today. I gave her the visor, bumper sticker, Angel pin we bought her, and the homemade button Spencer made for everyone. The buttons said " I love GrandMa Pat".

Thanks to Madison, Heather, Lynn and Melissa for helping push Summer's and Jacob's stollers today during the Family Fun Walk. It took all of us to get them around. Duke is built on the mosts unlevel ground in North Carolina. The trails went down hills, around ponds, up and down steps, though the frat yards, all over the campus.

Wanda was so excited everytime she went to her mailbox and someone had sent a donation. She would call me each day to give me a total. Mom was kept informed on the total as it grew and grew. We were very proud of the $3,100 we were able to collect. We know it is only because of you, our friends and family, that we were able to do it. We appreciate it more that we can put into words. If you could only see how excited Mom was about this. It pleased her to be able to help with the research.

Thanks again.
From the heart,
Wendy

Grandma Pat and Family - My name is Megan and my Dad is Bob Hurt. I know that Wanda has exchanged e-mail with my Aunt Monica. I just wanted to jump in and let you all know that my prayers are with all of you. I spent a long time yesterday reading your journal entries. Your family sounds a lot like our family. Big, loving, close, supportive, etc.... I wish we could have all come down for the Angels Among Us Walk this weekend. Please know that we will be there in spirit. Again, thinking positive thoughts about you and the rest of the brain tumor families out there.

The beauty of today was increased immensely when I found your website Pat! God bless your family (especially Wanda) for getting the story out. My brother has also been treating for a GBM since last July. What a blessing that he has been treating at Duke also since this past Dec. At Duke there is hope!! I found it most interesting that you have been receiving CPT-11 -- my brother begins this tomorrow. I have been praying extra hard and hope that this will work! Prayers and positive thoughts to you and your brave family! Your journal entries have boosted my spirits!!

Girls and I got back safely from Dallas today. Had beautiful weather Friday and Today while flying. Guess what! It STORMED Friday night and Saturday and until noon on Sunday while we were in Texas. Oh, well!
Morgan is growing up all too fast! (Why is it that 3 1/2 year olds seem so much smarter than we are?) I'm sure you see that with Summer and Jacob each day, but, only seeing Morgan every 4 months, it's a RUDE AWAKENING FOR US! Hope all is going well with you. Will be back in Raleigh soon. I believe that the ultimate solution is money for research. If we as a society spent even half the money we spend for the development of worthless, useless technical gadgets, on cancer research, I believe that people would not be suffering the way they are. As someone who has overcome a life-threatening illness, I thank God for every day on this earth. Keep hope alive!

Boy, things sounds as though they are going great. Seems like everytime Tom and I turn around, we are hearing of more and more miracles. At church during the last month we have had 3 cancer patients tell of positive results and healing, (the doctors don't know everything !!!)
Hope you enjoyed your birthday. Celebrating for days it sounds like it. ENJOY....
Tom and I will be in Raleigh March 1-2. We want to see you and Jimmy hopefully on Saturday, March 2. Will let you know as time gets closer. Sunday, March 3 we are driving on to Myrtle Beach for the week. (This is going to be our honeymoon !!)
Things are crazy around here trying to get tax stuff together. Tom's tax return looks like the J.C. PENNEY catalog !!! I would hate to see what Bill Gates return looks like. Probably the size of a set of encyclopedias.
Keep believing and we'll keep praying. Love to all of you.

Pat, It is good to hear that you are doing so well.I know that you probably don't know me but you sure know my dad. Dad and I have sorta kept up with you through Ishmael. But he didn't tell me you had your own website. I found that out through Tootsie and thanks to Carol for sending the address along to me. You can see a bunch of your Formy-Duval family genealogy on this site so that is my present to you.You have a rich French ancestery. My Dad ( Charlie Formy-Duval) wanted me to tell you hello for him and to let you know that he is praying for your full recovery and for you to take care and follow the doctor's advice. We will continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Hello Aunt Pat. yes I am guilty of not keeping in touch. Our computer here at work has been tied up with the guys using it all the time....SO, I asked Tom to have our office at home wired so we can get on internet at home. Got it wired last Friday, not on line yet though.
We FINALLY got some snow this morning. Was a surprise for everyone. Not much though, was gone by lunch. But very cold and windy.
Going to be going through Raleigh either March 1 or 2, hopefully will get out to see you. If you feel up to it maybe the four of us can go out for dinner. Either way, would love to see you and visit a little. Wanted to come out last time, but I remember how tired Tom used to get, and still does, from being up for a while without resting. He is pushing himself right now working 10-12 hour days. But he's a man, stubborn as a mule !!!!
Glad to hear things are stable and no change. You are in our prayer request every Sunday at church and of course everyday with us.
Another birthday ??? Well let's see, you should be about 39 this year. Can't be much older because it seems just like yesterday you and mom were pushing baby strollers and all of us were downtown or at the fair. So see, you can't be much older. (That way I don't get any older either !!!)
Keep up the spirits...God will take care of the rest.
Remember we love you very much.

Hello everyone,

I'm so glad to hear that Pat is doing so well. I just found your website thru Marg Strangman's site and will be sure to bookmark it so I can check back from time to time.

My mother-in-law, Peggy was diagnosed with glioblastoma in March 2001. Her road has been a very difficult one to say the least, so I'm pleased to know that Pat's road has been somewhat better.

Peggy has been bedridden for the last 3 months as her muscles have withered greatly and her mental alertness varies from day to day. The hardest part for all of us was her beligerent phase....she became someone we didn't even know. We've recently hired a home health agency to assist us with her care and they have been wonderful to us and to Peggy.

Pat, I'll be praying for you and your family. Please know there are many out here in cyberspace that have never personally met you, but we care about you and wish you all the best.

Hi, this is Wendy, Grandma Pat's middle daughter.
Happy Birthday Jacob. 3 years old! He is grandma Pat's youngest grandkid. The Grandkids have lifted her spirits so much. She sure loves them all.

At the Dollar Store Mama found Chex Mix snack food. She has fallen in love with it. It it sooooo good to see her eat so hardy again.

She was in such a great mood when I stopped by with the kids on Thursday evening. Summer got her silver fish charm. Dad ordered her a small charm to go on her new silver necklace. It's just like her Grandma's, she loves it.

Hello to everyone in Kinston. Hope Brenda is doing well.
Take Care, Wendy

Hi Grandma Pat

You have problems with snow? We have just returned from the beach in Queensland, Australia, and one day my son Gregory (15 YO) got so burnt on his back he tried everything, aloe vera, sliced tomatoes. Now it is okay, just that he leaves a trail of peeling skin everywhere he goes!

Prayers and best wishes for 2002.

Guess what? Only 15 more days til Christmas !!!! Now doesn't that just get the heart pumping....sounds as though things are going great. The wedding went off very smoothly and was quite pretty to have been so simple. Everyone got different poses and angles for pictures, therefore we have a really good variety. As soon as we get them all together I'll get some copies to you. Donna was absolutely beautiful. She met me at the beauty shop that morning and we both let my beautician do our makeup. It's a wonder what makeup can do for us.!!!! We are just glad it's over, so things can settle down. Tom is pushing himself too much lately. Can't make him realize how much his body has been through and it is going to take more than just a month or two to get this body back to normal. In fact there are some things that will never be the same, such as his seliva glands. It really bothers him, because he wants so much to sing in the church choir. I just keep reminding him that maybe God has other plans for him.
Tell everyone hello for me. We hope to get to Raleigh soon, but may wait til after the holidays. (safer on the roads)
Our love to all of you. Let us know if you need anything. Our prayers are ALWAYS with you.

Hey, Mrs.Anderson!! How are you? This is Kristi (aka~ Johnathan's girlfriend :) I hope you are feeling alright today. You are always in my prayers! I think I will leave you with one of my favorite poems: it's called "Whisper of Angel Wings."
"Today I stumbled and once again
Was lifted by an unseen hand.
What comfort and joy that knowledge brings
For I hear the whisper of angel wings.
The guardian angels God sends to all
To bear us up when we stumble and fall,

Hi Aunt Pat! I finally squeezed your website address out of Lauren and Lindsay, and now *I* have it bookmarked. It was wonderful to see you at Rachel's wedding-you looked so beautiful. You are often in my thoughts, especially at work when I take care of a GBM patient in our radiation-oncology clinic. I hope you get the kindest, gentlest, nurse there is, because you deserve the best. Take good care-you are in my prayers.

Hi

The counter says I am visitor number 6,000. Congratulations! Do I get a prize of one of those strange dishes I read about in the diary occasionally :-) Just kidding but the only food I recognise is when you mention that someone was "shelling peas". I think I know what that means - I assume they are also green over there in the USA. I hope Grandma Pat is feeling better. I know what dehydration is like. A couple of years ago one of of my sons went on a trek over the wartime Kokoda Trail in the jungle in Papua New Guinea and didn't take enough water. As a result he became dehydrated and had to be helped to walk. Keep up the water intake.

Prayers and best wishes

It's me again Aunt Pat. Well one week from today I will be doing it again...They say 3's a charm, let's hope so...Wedding plans are coming together. Just will be glad when it's over with. If you and Jimmy feel up to coming up Tom and I would like to get you a motel room so you won't have to drive straight back. If you can't make it, I will definately be thinking of you. (Wish me Luck !!!!) Gotta get this marriage thing right sooner or later (ha-ha). I'm really just into collecting diamonds!!
Have a great weekend. Talk to you later.

Good morning Aunt Pat. Heard that these last few days haven't been the best. I have a little saying at my desk that I read each day, especially when things just aren't going so great...it reads..."The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain" (by Dolly Parton) Oh how true. It is by faith alone that will get us through anything. You are in our prayers always, along with your family. We are only a call away if any of you need anything, or just want to talk. We love you.
The one thing we all must remember is that the only thing we have on this earth that is ours, is our family. Family will always be there for each other, in both good and bad times. Love always.

Hi Grandma Pat... Just checking in to say Hi and that I loved the pictures from the fair! Wish I could have brought my Dad ALL the way there too taste the yummy food and meet you in action!
Sounds like you are doing really well - keeping that tumor in its place! Hang in there and keep up the good work OK.
Dad is doing OK... he's on CLOUD 9 with the Arizona Diamondback World Series Championship... if happiness and joy could kill his tumor he would be home free :)

We think and pray for you and your family every day.

Lots of Love, Sheri

Hi Aunt Pat, I took a trip down memory lane and it made me smile. Remember all the times I stayed there and "the gang" played in the play house, had to walk to the store atleast 2 or 3 times a day. Played on the small hill with the ditch in front of the house and tracked mud in and you always telling me not to pick up Skippy because she might bite. I treasure those memories and look forward to making more!

As usual, the women of this world have to make sure things are done right.....( Bet Uncle Jimmy will get me for that comment..) Hope this note finds you feeling better. We are getting excited about the fair. Looking forward to seeing everyone too. I know we are "INEXPERIENCED" in the art of working the booth, but there may be other things that we can help with. Hello Aunt Pat. Haven't had much of a chance this week to get with you. Tom has been real sick also with his radiation treatments. Throat full of blisters and his salava glands no longer function. He finally slept all night last night for the first time in months.

Tom said to tell you to hang in there. Better days are ahead. He can relate to how you feel with the chemo reactions.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone again. Hopefully by the fair, Tom will be up to traveling. (not to mention that he talks of nothing but getting some of your cobbler!!)
Time is getting away from me lately. We are planning to get married on Nov. 23, and I never seem to be able to get everything coordinated. Just to be having a small ceremony, it is turning into a lot of work. Talmadge is wanting the "wedding" thing. I'll keep you posted on details.
Tell everyone hello for us. See you soon. Our love and prayers are with you always.

Hi everyone - sorry to hear you were feeling bad this weekend Wanda and Grandma Pat too! Sounds like things are getting better though - good.
My Dad (Butch) drinks a tablespoon of liquid chlorophyl (its a green tasteless liquid) every morning in a small glass of cold water. I buy it at my local healthfood store. Since he has done this, his blood counts have always stayed in the normal range! We read this tip from the book Thats UNAcceptable - the book the 8 year gbm tumor survivor wrote - and she drank the stuff everyday. Just a suggestion to help keep those counts up!

Dad says HI to Grandma Pat - I printed your pictures and showed them to him yesterday. He says you look wonderful - and asks "whats her secret!" He has gained almost 40 pounds from taking the decadron. Any helpful hints?

We are praying for you every day Grandma Pat - and Dad says its OK if some days you don't feel like saying anything, he dosen't either. Its all part of this crazy rollercoaster ride we are on!

Keep the faith, Love, Sheri

It's Thurs. morn. and I'm sure you are at your treatment. Tom and I are praying for you and hope you get through this as well as you have the other obsticles you have faced. Tom's radiation has really affected his throat. Has blisters all in his mouth and down this throat. Can't swallow at times. But as Wanda said, after Tuesday, our problems are very small compared to what others are facing. Just another situation to show us how precious every day is and we should let our loved ones know our feelings. Tell Uncle Jimmy we said hello and let us know if he needs anything. Sounds as though everything is going well. Hate that you have to take the IV chemo though. Tom said if your veins are good and they don't have trouble taking blood, he would recommend staying away from the port-a cath. It really bothered him. The only advantage is they don't have to stick you every time you turn around.
Tom's radiation has caused his throat to become raw. Now on nothing but liquids. (But loving the milkshakes)

Hi Everyone. I am suppose to be updating the page today but my Sisters, Wanda and Melodie, have changed the password on me. Wanda is getting Johnathan settled in at college and Melodie is working at the hospital. Mom's blood came back fine so Duke has ordered her next meds to be given on Tuesday. I spoke with her and asked her "How do you feel this morning and what would you like everyone one in the world to know about you today?" Her reply was I am "Doing Fine" and "Tell them I enjoyed seeing everyone at the party on Thursday". I'll do a better update when I GET THE PASSWORD....I guess I am not as in the loop as I thought I was....Wendy

Nice to read that Pat is rolling along comfortably. Keep it up! You people lead a busy family life. I liked that comment about Joanathan only coming home from College when his clothes need washing. I, also, have occasional visits from various offspring apparently solicitous for my welfare and then I realise that the big attraction is the washing machine and the clothes dryer :-)

Just wanted to say hello. Tell Uncle Jimmy my spagetti sauce turned out okay. Not as good as his though. But it was edible. Which after I accomplished the sauce, I attempted the cobbler. BIG MISTAKE...need to experiment more with it. Cobbler was SO DRY, no juices, and the topping part, well we'll just say that I hope the animals in the field liked it. Just don't have the touch for the right combination of ingrediants yet. Guess Tom will have to wait til October for some "edible" cobbler!!!!
Hope you are feeling well. Tom starts his radiation around the 10th of Aug.

Hi to Pat and family.

Thank you for your kind comments about my wife Marg. She had a tremendous "Celebration of Life" and I have uploaded some photos here:

Re the "Fish sign". You might find this webpage interesting, which is from another website I maintain:
http://www.geocities.com/string_au/murdoch.htm
They discovered a Fish sign which had been hidden away for 72 years.
Re the chemo: sounds like Temozolomide (Temodar / Temodal). If tablets are being ordered in, remember that they cannot be divided, in order to get the right dose, and the dose might change from Round to Round, so various combinations might be needed.
Your diary is very good.

It was wonderful to see Wendy last week in CT. She is my little sister. I wish she was close by so we could shop together. I liked the pair of pants she had that I just went out and got me a pair just like hers. Thats one good thing about being so far apart. I hope you are up to going to the beach in July. We are going to the beach in July also. We go to the New Jersey shore and I really love the beach. My husband Frank and I are going with his son and wife and our grandaughter, we can't wait. Have a good week. Anne Rodriguez

Hi Pat, I just love the Easter Bonnet. I talked with Wanda she told me you got a thumbs up from Duke today. That is great!! Pics of you and Jonathan were really good. I am so proud of him and I know all of you are too. I can remember changing his diapers just as if it was yesterday. I went through pictures of him and Cliff Sunday and cried for a hour. Gary just looked at me and laughed. Cliff will graduate Sunday and I can't wait to see how much he laughs then.

Hello Wendy and family,

Don and I thoroughly enjoyed reading up on your mom. One thing that struck us was the amount of love and true sense of family that came through. How wonderful that you are all so close and able to communicate so well. That is really a blessing. We are in prayer for you all, especially for you, Pat. God Bless, Don and Teresa Meanor

Pat
To have both breast cancer and a brain tumour at the same time is awfully bad luck. We hope they can deal effectively with the breast cancer and let you concentrate on the brain tumour.
Prayers and best wishes

I like that comment about how it is okay to breathe. Marg (gbm iv) once went under the MRI and I think the technician forgot to tell her that she could exhale now! Prayers and best wishes.
