Hard to believe another Christmas has come and gone. We had a great time watching the kids open their presents. Kaitlin was thrilled to get everything she asked for... an icecream maker and a trash can!!! All three kids really enjoyed the nintendo DS players and their golf clubs. They have being playing with both, non stop, for the past 2 days. It has been VERY peaceful for the last few days:)

Gerry and I are planning to celebrate our 19th anniversary this weekend. Looks like dinner and a movie for us. It will be nice to see a non- Disney produced movie for a change and to eat someplace other than McDonalds!!!

Monday Gerry and I will travel back home since I need to work with the science olympiad kids at the high school. The kids are going to spend the week with Grandma and Grandpa Sweetpea until next weekend. AHHHHHH peace and quite for a whole week...

Take care

* Tommy is a brown belt in Tae Kwon do, Kaitlin and Adam started in December and are now orange belts
* Gerry just passed his testing and is now a blackbelt!!!
* I got a job at the local High School and will be teaching Chemistry and Physics in the brand new building.

* The kids are enjoying swimming, going to the zoo and botanicla gardens, shopping, playing outside, and going for walks with grandma sweetpea

We don't know if we will be able to go to the lake this year or if Tommy will be able to go to New York... all depends on grandpa's recovery.

Huggs and kisses to all

We have survived the first week of school!!! Tommy loves his class and teacher. He is very excited about being in the high math class and being a grade ahead. Hope this enthusiasm continues for the rest of the year. Adam is very upset that he isn't going to his "school" anymore. Hopefully Gerry will find a new job quickly and the 2 little ones can go back and see their friends.

The kids are all staying very active with soccer, gymnastics, Tae-Kwon-Do, playing with friends... they keep us hopping. Both Tommy and Adam are playing AYSO soccer. Tommy is doing great and learning alot. Adam...well... he is still trying to figure out the game. He is not sure what to do with the ball, but he LOVES his yellow and green uniform. Kaitlin is turnning into quite the little gymnist. She talks about it constantly and "practices" whenever she has a chance. I think she looks absolutely adorable in her gymnastics leotard.

New pictures have been added so check them out!!!

Hi Everyone,

We had a wonderful Memorial Weekend. We drove up to Marshfield, Wis. for my cousin Kerry's wedding. Kaitlin was the flowergirl and was absolutely adorable in her dress. The boys were so handsome dressed in their "Church" clothes with their little neck ties. Too cute!!!

June is off to a running start...literally. All 3 kids ran in the first race of the season for the Kokomo Road Runners. Kaitlin and Adam participated in the 50 yrd. dash. They were so excited to get to the finish line and get their reward; a ribbon and popsicle. Tommy is in with the big kids and ran the 1 mile race with the 8-10 yrs. There were about 100 kids in the race and Tommy placed 20th. Everyone had a great time.

This month will be packed with a trip to New York, camp, swimming lessons, VBS, soccer, Tae-Kwon-Do, Summer Reading (library program), working in our new garden...so much to do and so little time. In between all the activities we hope to get down to my parents and swim at the waterpark.

Hope everyone is enjoying the summer. Take care.

Love,
Laura, Gerry, Tommy, Adam and Kaitlin

We survived the Easter holiday!!!

What a wonderful weekend. The kids were such fun to watch. I had a hard time keeping up with all three to get some good pictures. Good thing my mother was snapping away as well. Between the 2 of us we really got some wonderful shots.

This was Kaitlin's first experience with an Easter egg hunt. All we had to do was help her find 1 egg and then she took off; a real pro. She was running around shouting "an egg, an egg!!! mommy look what I see". Kaitlin loved her Dora bucket and sunglasses. She also got a Dora playset and a Care Bear DVD. What a lucky girl.

Adam is REALLY into Spiderman!!! He has an imaginary friend who is called Spiderman. Adam has to cunsult Spiderman before he does anything. It is cute but starting to become a real pain. For Easter the bunny gave him Spiderman 2 and a Spiderman bucket. His treats were in Spiderman eggs. He also got a Spiderman swim suit... you get the idea!!! Adam still really enjoys going to "school" and is making some new friends. Hard to believe he will be in Pre-K next fall. My baby boy is growing too fast.

Tommy learned the "adult secret" about the Easter bunny and Santa Clause. I think he had more fun knowing the Easter bunny isn't real and helping fill eggs for the little ones then when he believed. He feels all grown up knowing the secret and played the part of Easter bunny like a pro. Now he is planning ahead for Christmas and wants to help wrap the presents. He has generously offered to eat Santa's cookies on Christmas eve. That's my boy!!!

UPDATE - Kaitlin's health... We spoke with the ped. Endocrinologist at Riley Children's hospital. He said that over the past 3 months they have seen a steady decrease in Kaitlin's levels (good thing). The doctor believes she has transient hypothyroidism. The good news is she may be getting over this and make a full recovery. The bad news is the dr. does not want to start any treatment because he is affraid her thyroid would become dependant on the medicine and not full recovery and regulate its-self. We are just praying that she will sart feeling better soon and not sleep so much. Time will tell. Kaitlin will go in in acouple of months for follow up tests.

HAPPY "GOTCHA" DAY!!!

Can you believe we have had Kaitlin home now for 1 year. it seems as if she has always been part of our family. So many milestones have been reached these past 12 months; first steps, first words, first experience with snow...first time to hear I wub yu mama.

It has been rough with Kaitlin's health. Between the ear infections, surgeries, pnuemonia, and now her thyroid disorder...she has kept us hopping. Yes, we finally got a diagnosis. Kaitlin has hypothyroidism and that has caused her hair loss, fatique, dry skin rashes, ect. We have an appointment with the pediatric endocrinologist on April 17th at the Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis. Hopefully we can begin treatment and get our little angel back on her feet.

In the mean time, the boys are doing well. Adam is going to pre-K program even though he won't start Kindergarten for another 1 1/2. He loves going to "school" and even though he is a year younger than the other kids he teacher says he is doing very well. Tommy just got his report card and once again made 90's (lowest grade was a 93). He is in the accelerated reading and math program and really enjoys the challenge. We also got word that his teacher is going to submit a piece of writing he did about his sister to the Reading Rainbow Young Writers Contest. He is really excited about it. Now we just have to get that boy to go to bed and sleep, not stay up until mid-night writing.

I hope to give another up-date as soon as we get word from Kaitlin's doctor appointment. Until then take care.

What a great weekend. Kaitlin and our family got a special treat. Karli and Toni came to Indy for a visit. Karli is another Yulin darling who was adopted with Kaitlin this past spring. It was amazing seeing how much the girls have grown and changed. Since we see Kaitlin on a daily bases it is hard to judge just how much she has grown and developed.

All the kids are doing VERY well now that mommy has been home. Kaitlin is not as clingy and is sleeping much better. She enjoys coloring and reading and wants to use the potty by herself...hmmmmm maybe we will finally have a child potty trained before the age of 3 1/2. Adam loves being home schooled. Every week we have a new theme, practice writing his letters, work on his reading and math and computers. He loves to have "homework" and getting gold stars on his finished papers. Tommy has shown the most amazing improvement. His grades have gone up and he now is making staight A's, he is well rested, and enjoys playing "mother hen" to his little brother and sister when he gets home from school. I am really enjoying my time with the kids and healthwise feel stronger and not so tired. Everyone is ajusting wonderfully to our new routine.

Enjoy the new pictures. Don't forget to visit our our family website for more pictures. You can find the link below.

Well we survived the Holidays with no problems. Santa spoiled the kids so they are in their glory with new toys and games to play with. Kaitlin was a real trooper. After her big brothers showed her how to unwrap her gifts she jumped right in and had some fun. She was ripping paper off everything whether it was hers or not!!! Tommy got a new violin and has started taking lessons(from mommy of course). Adam's favorite present was a cape my mother made him so he could play "superheros". Kaitlin got MANY gifts that make a ton of noise. The louder the better. She also got a beautiful baby doll from "American Girl". Her favorite gift, however, is a little chair that my mother was given by the women she works with at the shelter.

We traveled up North to visit family in Wisconsin. The kids had a chance to see the "cousins by the dozens" and their Great Grandma. Everyone was happy to see the little ones running through the house. Great Grandma was always laughing and smiling at their antics; a nice thing to see. We really enjoyed the water park at the hotel. Kaitlin must have gone down the waterslide 50 times before we had to leave. She is definitely our little tadpole!!!

Our big news for the month... I will be taking a medical leave from work beginning Jan. 13th. until the end of the school year. Things have been just too difficult to handle while working full time. Our family physisian wanted me to quit 2 months ago, however I thought I could juggle my schedule and get the rest I needed. We were wrong!!! So in the best interest of the family and my health we made the choice for me to stay home. If all goes well I should be able to return in August.

Take care,

Laura, Gerry, Tommy, Adam and Kaitlin

Monday, December 5, 2005 12:51 AM CST

And the whirl wind of activities is well under way!!! I just can't believe it is December already. Christmas shopping is in the works, the boys are preparing to build a ginger bread Christmas train, and Kaitlin has no clue what the fuss is all about.

Santa came through the neighborhood Saturday morning on the fire truck. The kids were so excited. Each got a little bag of goodies, then the boys went inside and started writing their Christmas wish lists. Poor little Kaitlin didn't know what to make of the silly man dressed in red, but she quickly learned to say "Santa" and was very happy about her little bag of sweet treasures.

We went to a fund raiser for a family who is in the process of adopting. It was a fun filled night of games and activities with the family. The high light was Adam winning a BIG triple chocolate bunt cake.

We celebrated Gerry's birthday. All three kids helped make his cake. They actually did a good job!!! Gerry kept saying that he couldn't believe he turnned 40. Tommy thought is was funny that we had to buy, and use 2 whole packs of candles for his cake.

I hope to give another up-date before the New Year, but if not... God's Blessings over the holiday's.

Love to all
Gerry, Laura, Tommy, Adam, and Kaitlin

Well...we survived Halloween and the kids had a ball. Kaitlin went Trick or Treating at some of the neighboors' houses and decided she had enough. Gerry took the boys for the 2 hour candy collecting party while the little miss and I past out treats to all the little ghosts and goblins that came knocking. What a blast!!! The door bell would ring and Kaitlin would fly into action. She filled all the Halloween baskets, said good bye, blew kisses and closed the door...what a little ham. Adam joined us about 1 hour later. It was such a riot whatching the 2 of them run to the door and work as a team to give out the candy. Once Tommy returned from his adventures the kids sat at the table eating popcorn, some candy and taking about all the "cool costums" they saw. We gave out 137 Kit Kat bars in a 2 1/2 hour period of time. Not bad!!! And no one was injured in the process.

Enjoy the picture!!!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Sunday, October 9, 2005 2:53 PM CDT

This has been a very stressful yet productive week for everyone. Between illness, work, school and family we are all ready for a relaxing weekend.

Our little Kaitlin gave us a bit of a scare early this week. She woke me up Tuesday morning with what looked like a seizure. We took her in to the emergency room and the doctor worked on her for a good 2 hours. They were just about to take her in for a CT scan when she had another "episode" of shaking, eyes rolling back, vomiting and passing out. The doctor then hooked her up to a heart monitor and said it wasn't a seizure. Kaitlin's heart was stopping momentarily causing a drop in blood pressure and then she would black out. Well to make a long story short, she has what is called Neurocardiogenic Syncope or Vasovagal syncope. It is a harmless response to extreme pain, fatigue, stress, trama... like fainting when a person sees blood. We will have to monitor her when see is sick or over tired, change her diet to include more salt and potassium, keep her hydrated when it is hot and watch for pre-vaso signs so that we can "take action". When all is said and done, we got off easy.

Adam is enjoying pre-school. He is making lots of friends and seems quite popular with the other kids. They are always trying to hug him, share their snack or toys, and want to play with him. He just eats up the extra attention. His teachers say he is doing very well. We just signed him up for the computer program at school. He receives 20 min. of individual computer instruction 3 days/week. Adam enjoys working on the computer and the fact that he has "homework" just like Tommy. Hope that attitude sticks around when he is older.

Tommy can home with some exciting news Friday... he lost his first tooth. What a production. We had to hear ALL the details about how, where and when it came out. He is doing very well at school and is looking forward to report cards at the end of the week.

Grammie, Aunt Debbie and Aunt Patti are out for the weekend. We had fun Saturday going on our annual trek to Stucky Farms for pumpkin picking. I think everyone had a great time. When we came home we spent the rest of the afternoon watching the kids play and carving pumpkins. Kaitlin, Tommy and Adam are getting spoiled by all the attention. The 2 boys have been enjoying swimming and sleeping at the hotel, and Kaitlin has cashed in on mommy and daddy's free time without her brothers. The only hitch was Tommy's concern that the tooth fairy wouldn't find him at the hotel. He wrote her a letter with directions where to find him. In the end, he was rewarded with $3.00 AND was allowed to keep his tooth. Thank you tooth fairy!!!

This week work has become easier for me. I was told I didn't need to get my Biology degree at this time. My ICP class is growing so fast that by next year I may not even be teaching the course. Anyway it was a big relief especially with everything going on with Kaitlin lately. No changes with Gerry's job other than the guy who has been his acting manager officially was assigned the position. This gives Gerry some renewed hope that things may get better at his company. Only time will tell.

So long for now

The Simons' Family of 5

Tuesday, September 20, 2005 7:01 PM CDT

It has been a long but wonderful day. After 5 months of chronic ear infections, Kaitlin had surgery to put tubes in and remove some scar tissue. She was a real trooper and has been all smiles since comming home. Hopefully everyone can enjoy her smiles again and all the ear trouble is history.

Kaitlin is growing so fast. At her last check-up she was about 19 lbs and 29". Her hair is growing so now I can put pig tails in (Yipeeeeee). She is doing very well in daycare and loves her teacher, Ms. Susan. She loves to dance and color.

Tommy has had a great school year so far. all his grades are 93 and above, including a A in citizenship and spelling. We are so proud of him. He says that his goal is to make honor roll this quarter. At this rate he will do it.

Adam is growing by leaps and bounds. He loves pre-school and talks non-stop about his day when I pick him up. Adam loves doing "homework" and practices writing his letters and coloring. He started Sunday school as well.

Hi everyone,

We had a great trip to Lake George. The kids had blast playing with their new friends, boating, fishing, swimming, digging on the beach, toasting marshmellows, watching the fireworks, visiting family...none stop action packed vacation!!!

Best/favorite part of the trip:

Tommy (7 1/2): "I liked catching my 3 big fish and building rivers in the sand". "Mommy if I dig far enough in the sand and make a big enough hole, could I go to China and get another sister?"

Adam (3 1/2): "I liked the funny boat waves that came and tickled my belly, Hee Hee". "Marshmellows are good for my tummy!!!"

Kaitlin (15 mths) as described by mommy: Kaitlin liked to get soaked in the lake and then come running to mommy to be held.

Mommy: I loved to see my children enjoying the place I grew up and experiencing the wonders of summer that I enjoyed as a child.

Daddy: The joys of being a bachelor for a whole week!!!

The biggest complaint or problem - Kaitlin had a double ear infection and had to go to the hospital half way through the trip. She also had a VERY ROUGH time with the 10 - 11 hrs. drive. We hope to return again next year.

Later
Love Laura, Gerry, Tommy, Adam, and Kaitlin

Hi from the Simons' family

Everyone is very excited around here... we are getting ready for our big trip north to Wisconsin. Can't wait to see the family and have them meet Kaitlin for the first time. Mom and Dad will be going with the kids and myself. Gerry is going to stay at home and have a wonderful week as a bachlor. Nice opportunity for him to rest, relax, and get some things done around the home without 3 little eager beavers under foot.

We will be staying in a cabin on the lake in Rhinelander. The weather forcast is calling for hot humid temperatures; perfect for swimming and hanging out on the beach. Tommy and Adam are begging to go fishing. Hope we can catch something. I am excited about being there for the 4th of July. It is one of my favorite times of the year in Wisconsin; kiddie parades, bands, carnival, and the fireworks over Hodag Lake... brings back wonderful memories. I just can't believe I now have 3 children to share this with.

It has been almost 7 years since I have been to northern Wisconsin. I am anxious to see how things have changed. I have mixed feeling about seeing my grandparents old house on Clear Lake. I have heard that the new owners have made some major changes to the old homestead.

Wisconsin or BUST!!! July 1st - July 9th

Love to all
Gerry, Laura, Tommy, Adam and Kaitlin

Busy, busy, busy!!! Wow, what a week; I thought summer break was so you could rest and relax. Tommy and Adam's activities have kept me going full speed.

Tommy has been taking swim lessons at the High School, VBS in the evenings, he has been attending asthma camp during the day, practicing running for the roadrunner's races, and going to Tae-Kwon-do. We have had to be flexible and creative with scheduleing to get everything in. Tommy loves all the action. He certainly has not been board. When we have some extra time he has been working on his summer work book to get ahead for next year, playing with his friends, and helping out around the house.

Adam has a busy life as well. He has VBS in the evenings, gymnastics, and the roadrunners club. We keep busy playing and doing his "homework" while Tommy is gone to camp. Adam is getting such a wonderful little personality. I really have enjoyed our time together when Kaitlin is sleeping and Tommy is at camp. He loves to paint, read books, play outside, and build club houses with all the blankets and sheets he can get his hands on.

Kaitlin is blooming with all the attention she gets. She is talking more, loves to give kisses (my favorite), plays peek-a-boo, enjoys her swing, smiles at everyone...she is a true blessing. Her brother adore her and she thinks they are the greatest.

Kaitlin's baptism was this past Sunday. We had family and friends to help us bring Kaitlin into God's forever family. Tommy was thrilled to be Kaitlin's sponsor for the baptism along with Gerry's sister Debbie. After church we all had a relaxing afternoon with a BBQ, cake and presents.

Take Care
Love
Gerry, Laura, Tommy, Adam and Kaitlin

SCHOOL IS ALMOST OUT FOR THE SUMMER!!!!

We have alot to look forward to this summer. Tommy will continue with the summer swim lessons at school and at the sports center, he plans to buckle down and really put an effort into Tae-Kwon-Do so he can test this fall for his brown tip, and he has several camps to attend. The biggest change is that he has officially been diagnosed with asthma. One of the camps he will be going to is specifically for children with asthma. All the "counslors" are nursing students from the University in Kokomo. The do arts and crafts, play games and have workshops to educate the kids about asthma and the medications they take.

Adam will be starting gymnastics and/or soccer. It is about time he becomes involved in some activities. He is so ready to go to school and have real "homework" that he has us making work sheets and other activities for him. I picked up a work book for the summer for him so he has one while Tommy does his summer bridge work.

Kaitlin is doing great. she has so much energy that she wears her brothers out. Her favorite thing now is to give kisses; the big wet sobbery kind. She is walking very well and I think will start gymnastics in the fall. In the mean time she is content to explore out side and run after Tommy and Adam.

This summer I will be taking the kids along with mom and dad to Wisconsin for the 4th of July. We will be staying in a cabin on lake George. I love being up North for the holiday and I can't wait to go to the parade and see the fireworks. The boys will be attending VBS for a week and we hope to sneek a day trip/weekend and go down to the caves in Kentukey.

We are currently busy with preparations for Kaitlin's baptism. she will be wearing one of her silk dresses we brought back from China. All of the females in the family will also be receiving pearl necklaces that we bought in China as well. Kaitlin will be getting her pearl bracellet. I can't wait.

Love to all
Laura, Gerry, Tommy, Adam and Kaitlin

Hi everyone,

Life with 3 childern is never boring. The kids are getting along great (most of the time). Adam is very protective of Kaitlin and doesn't like anyone other than Grandparents, Gerry, Tommy or myself to pick her up or hold her. If she is crying he is one of the firsts there to make sure his little sister is OK. Tommy has really matured. He steps right in and helps with the 2 little ones with out being asked. He is so patient and gentle with both of them.

The school year is comming to a close in about 4 weeks. I can't believe Tommy is finishing 1st grade. When I picked up his summer review book, Adam decided he wanted "homework" as well. Now we have trip to Wisconsin, Tae Kwon Do, Swimming, and Gymnastics to schedule. Looks like we have plenty of things to keep us busy over the summer break.

This weekend was the big neighborhood garage sale. We found lost of "treasures" for all the kids and some greatbuys on clothes for Kaitlin. Tommy helped out some friends with their consession stand while Adam ate all the profits. We couldn't have asked for a better day; slight breeze, sunny, about 70-73 degress...wonderful!!!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!! I will be celebrating next weekend at an all day "pamper yourself" scrapbooking crop. Can't wait to get some of Kaitlin's book done. I have some wonderful pictures of the 3 kids that will be fun to do as well.

Untill next time.

Love
Gerry, Laura, Tommy, Adam, and Kaitlin

Hi everyone,

Life with 3 kids has been VERY interesting. Kaitlin seems to be doing much better. She isn't coughing any more, and her wonderful personality is shinning through. She absolutely adores her two big brothers and wiggles and smiles every time one of them walks into the room. We celebrated her 1st birthday today even though it isn't until Wednesday. With everyone's busy schedules and having all the family around this weekend...it seemed like the best time. Kaitlin had Care Bear cake and decorations. She loved "playing" in the frosting and managed to get some of the cake into her mouth. I don't think she knew what was going on, however she loved all the attention.

Kaitlin is adjusting to family life beautifully. She is always smiling and showing off her 2 cute little dimples. She has 4 teeth now and it looks like 2 more are ready to poke through. Her big accomplishment...Kaitlin is walking!!! Look out world, here she comes.

We had both Adam and Tommy in and out of the doctor's office this week. Adam had to go to the hospital last Saturday for a nasty ear infection. His poor ear then started bleeding Sunday morning and he is still having problems. We had to start him on a second round of antibiotics Yesterday. He also has pinkeye which he was generous enough to share with Tommy (2 separate trips to the doctor). Our Pharmasist knows us by name now.

Next week promises to be another fun filled adventure. Monday our Social Worker will be visiting to see how every thing is going. Adam sees his ENT Tuesday to check his ear and hearing and Tommy has his Spring Concert at school. Wednesday Kaitlin has her 1 year check up and a chest X-ray to see how her pneumonia is doing. So far nothing is planned for the end of the week...but we know how fast that can change!!!

Untill next time
Love
Gerry, Laura, Tommy, Adam and Kaitlin

It feels so good to be home!!!

The flight was better than I had expected. Kaitlin was a real trooper; quite the little traveler. Unfortunately there was more that she was coping with than we could have guessed at the time. It seems little misses had a nasty infection brewing in her system.

We arrived home at about 6:00 pm. Kaitlin cried the entire ride home from the airport. I thought she just didn't like the restriction of the car seat, which I beleive was her first experience with that contraption. However, by 8:00 she was running 103-104 temperature. It was tough getting throught the weekend. We have been going back and forth with doctors since arriving home. It appears that she has an infection in both ears, and pnemonia which has caused her oxygen levels to be low. At this point the doctor has warned us that if her levels don't improve that they will have to admit her to the hospital.

The boys have become attached to their little sister very quickly. Tommy is very worried about Kaitlin. He wants to be with her all the time and the thought of being apart if she goes to the hospital has been hard on him. He is very nuturing and protective of her. He yelled at me when I used regular tissues to wipe her nose instead of the puffs plus. Tommy loves to sit in the recliner with her and read books, feed her a bottle, rub her back... He is an excellenct big brother. Adam is ready to have a playmate. He is always bringing her new toys and showing her how they work. He acts so silly trying to get her to smile at his. Kaitlin loves his blond hair. She could entertain herself for an hour if Adam would sit still long enough. Adam is just so excited to show her new things.

Well... it has been a long journey ( 1 year to be exact) however, we have truely been blessed. I could not imagine our family without her. I now feel as if our family is complete.

Take care
Love,
Gerry, Laura, Tommy, Adam and Kaitlin

Hi again,

We made it to the White Swan hotel in Guangzhou. Talk about the perks. People to wait on you hand and foot!!! Maybe I won't be comming home (Ha, Ha). It is VERY nice here but we are ready to come home and get into a regular routine again.

Kaitlin reached a couple of milestones in the past 2 days. She said Mama for the first time and took her first steps (about 4-5). She loves her baths, eats just about everything in sight and does not like doctors.

We had her medical check Tuesday. She was declared a "heathy baby, everything normal". Her weight was 20 lbs and she is 27 1/2 inches tall. All of the girls in our group were about the same in height and weight.

Today is a free day so I think we will go shopping and spend some money, Again.

Thins will be last last post from China. Tomorrow we fly to Hong Kong, spend the night and fly out in the morning for HOME!!!! We will see everyone very soon.

Tommy, Adam and Gerry - I miss you very much and can hardly wait to give you lots of hugs and kisses. I have 2 weeks worth to make up for so be prepared.

Hugs and kisses
Laura and Kaitlin

Hi everyone,

Tommy-thank you for the wonderful note. I needed that since I miss you so much.

I thought I had better post today because we will be off to Guangdong early tomorrow. We also have a full day scheduled.

6:00am luggage outside the room
6:30am breakfast
8:00 leave hotel
10:00 flight for Guangdong
Upon arrival have visa pictures taken
3:00 medical check-up for the babies
dinner
work on consulate documents

As for today, we visited a wonderful park called Yiling Peoples Park. You walk throught the park and at several points you stop for a particular ceremony: bamboo dance, singing, sticky rice and tea, small zoo, and stilt dance. We had a great time.

After the park we went to a Zhoung (pronounce JONG) village. Most of the girls in our group, including Kaitlin are part Zhoung as their ethnicity. It is a minority group in China with the Han people dominating. Based on characteristics Joy (our facilitator) does not believe any of the girls are pure Zhoung, although Kailtin is close. Joy said she would have to she her when she is older to tell.

Any way, it was arranged for us to visit the village so that we could see what our girls' village would be like. What an eye opener. I took lots of pictures and video but I'm sure it will not do justice. We are so thankful that Kaitlin will not be growing up in a place like that. It also makes us that much more grateful for the life we have.

After our touring we headed back to the hotel so that we could pack for tomorrows flight. This will be an excellent chance to see how Kaitlin handles flying and prepare us for a small glimps of what is in store for us in a few days.

I hope to post as soon as possible so I can give you an up-date after Kaitlin's medical exam. I'm curious to see how big she is. It seems like she has gained weight just since we have had her.

What can Kaitlin do now: We taught her how to wave hello and good bye, she blows rasberries, gives her baby doll kisses, and eats everything in sight!!!

Good Bye for now
Love
Laura and Kaitlin

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE,

What a wonderful way to celebrate Kaitlin's first Easter. We had a small church service with just the Bethany families. Kaitlin wore her little Easter dress I bought before we left home. It was a bit big on her but she looked so sweet.

Yesterday we received some wonderful surprises. Both of the cameras I sent to the orphanage were returned. All of the picture have been taken except for 2, so we are hoping to have about 45 pictures of the orphanage and her caregivers. We were also given photocopies of her finding ad. The big surprise was that the estimation of her birthday is not the same as the date we were given. it seems like she was about 1 week old when she was left at the orphange gate. So her birthdate is more like April 13th than the 20th. We have the chance to change the date however, I think we will leave things as is. Maybe we will have the April 13th date as a day to remember her birthmother and thank her for all the sacrifies she made so we could have our little Katie.

Thank you to everyone who have been sending us messages and your prayers of support. Just to answer some of your questions: Kaitlin is doing wonderfully. All the girls from Yulin SWI were very well cared for and loved very much. Kaitlin is comfortably wearing 6-9 month cloths. Her little Easter dress came down about 1 inch from the floor (it was a 12mth outfit). She has a very good appitite. Her favorite meal is pig blood congee with chicken and vegetables (yuck!!!). Fortunately, she has a liking for scrambled eggs, rice and crackers.

Just to give you an update from the past 2 days: Yesterday we spent the morning at a park here in Nanning. On the bus ride we were given more information about Yulin and its people. We were told that in general the Yulin people are known for being very smart and specialize in business and math. Many of the local industries in Nanning and other parts of China "scout" Yulin for their skills in math related careers. As a whole the Guangxi province is not a big industrial province. They are known for their artistry, paintings, music, and dance. There are many traditions that are indiginous to this region only, such as the ceremony of the embrodery balls. It is a special way that girls let a boy know they are interested in them and it involves tossing the ball to the boy and singing a specially composed, original song.

We spent a good 2-3 hours at the park and Temple. While we were at the temple we used a film canister and collected a bit of the soil to bring back. In the park there were several groups of teen agers. This is their spring break . One of the popular things for the young people to do is to go to the park for picnics. Several of them wanted to have their pictures taken with us and Kaitlin, and then they would shower us with gifts such as cookies and oranges. The people are so friendly and so enthusiasic about life in general... just wonderful culture. We are truely falling in love with China. I just wish I had Gerry and the boys here to share this with.

Latter in the afternoon we went to a world renoun pearl and jade market (store). Our facilitator arrange a nice little discount on our purchases even though the price was already very low. We were able to get full strings of pearls for the equivalent of $30 US money. We also got a nice jade pendant for Kaitlin for her 16th birthday; this is a Chinese custom.

Kaitlin is an excellent sleeper. She goes to bed at about 9:00 pm and is up between 8:00-9:00. I think I have gotten more sleep in the last 2 nights than I ever did since the boys were born.

This afternoon we have free. Mom and I are going to venture out and see if we can't find an additional suitcase for all our wonderful goodies we have found.

Hope everyone is doing well. Until next time Xie Xie (good Bye) from China.

Love
Laura and Kaitlin

GOTCHA!!! We have her!!! The past 24 hours has been incredible...so many emotions it is hard to describle.

We flew out of Beijing Thurday morning and arrived in Nanning at about 4:00 pm. We loaded all of our luggage onto the bus and were taken directly to the Civil Affairs building to receive the girls. On the bus we were given a detailed list of questions that all of the foster parents had filled out...Yes, foster parents. All of the girls had been placed shortly after our refferals had been accepted. It was explained that the director of the SWI thought it was best for the children to experience real family life before they were adopted. Kaitlin lived with her foster parents, a foster sister, who is in elementary school, and foster grandparents.

We waited in the Civil Affairs building for about 20 min. when the babies were brought in. I could hear some of them cring in the hall prior to their arrival. It was at that point that I lost it (so did many of the other mothers and fathers). One by one families were called and their daughter was brought in. We were about the 5th family. I recognized Kaitlin even before her name was called. There was my beautiful daughter just like her pictures but with HAIR. Kaitlin just stared at us. Most, if not all the other babies were crying, some histarically. Kaitlin never cried. I brought a soft baby doll with me and started to tickle her cheeks. She just smiled and started wiggling with excitement. She has not stopped smiling since!

Through all the chaos we did have one major upset... the battery in the video camera died. We had brought a converter, however, once we opened the package it said it could not be used for recharging batteries. I was so upset when it went out, but I soon forgot my feeling as soon as that precious little girl was placed in my arms. We did get plenty of pictures!!!

In just 5 min. it was all over. All the families had their daughters and once again we were off. We went strait to the hotel and had some time to ourselves to bond with Kaitlin. She is such a happy baby. I can't wait for Gerry and the boys to see her.

At about 9:00 Kaitlin fell asleep. In the mean time, I spent about 2 hours preparing document for Friday; Adoption Day.

Kaitlin woke up bright and cheery, just as she had been Thurday evening. We had a quick breakfast with the crew. All the babies seemed to be VERY healthy and bonding with their parents.

After our meal we went back to the Civil Affairs building for the official Adoption Cerimony. After swearing to love and protect our daughters and not abandon or abuse them we were all given gifts for the girls from the orphanage director. Each girl received a tiny silver bracelet with an inscription. I will have to talk to our facilitator and find out what it says. We were also given a photo albulm of our daughters with their foster family. Kaitlin looks like she really loved her foster mom and sister. The photos are a real treasure. I also was told that some of the families received cameras back from the care packages they sent. I sure hope our is one of them.

Well... we now have the rest of the afternoon to play and shop. Kaitlin has been such a joy I am anxious to get her home and have her spoiled by her 2 big brothers and her father. Untill tomorrow... Xie Xie (good Bye)

Love and kisses
Laura and Kaitlin

Hi again.

We are having a wonderful time. I have learned several things about Chinese culture and lifestyles. Here are the top 5:

1. Chinese yogurt is awsome!!!
2. Chinese squatty potties stink (literally)
3. If you bring your own toilet paper you will be everyones new best friend
4. Fish lips and pig tndons don't taste as bad as it sounds
5. Chinese air conditioning intails opening the windows

Today is another exciting day of sight seeing. We will be going to the Summer palace (not yesterday) and then do some shopping in silk alley.

I will not be writing tomorrow since we will be leaving for Nanning to get Kaitlin. We have a 9:00 departure from the Hotel, 11:00 from the airport, arriving in Nanning about 2:00 and go directly to the Civil Affairs office to get Kaitlin. It has been so hard to sleep at night thinking how close I am to holding my daughter...just can't wait!!! I will post as soon as I get the lay of the land and find a computer at the new Hotel.

Take care
Laura and Kaitlin

Monday, March 21, 2005 5:12 PM CST

Hi everyone. We made it to Beijing safe and sound. The plane ride was Very, very, very...long. I can't imagine going back on that trip with a screaming, wiggly 11 month old! It will be rough, but definitly worth it.

We went to the Great Wall yesterday - amazing. Imagine walking stairs that are at a 60 - 75 degree angle and some steps as high as your knees. I should have used the stairmaster more at home before the trip. We had a very pleasant ride in a gondola that took us up to the wall. Beautiful mountains, some ice still in small crevices. We saw the portion of the wall in Badaling. Breathtaking views, lots of pictures, hopefully some good video.

We also went to the Cloissone factory. Christmas shopping is done (Ha Ha!!). What an incredible process. Cloissone is a traditional Chinese art that involves designs in copper fired with enamle to create vases, jewlery, figuries, and other decorative art. The process is completed in about 42 steps. We were shown the main 7 steps. It really gives you a new appreciation for the artisty behind Cloissone.

The people we are traveling with are wonderful. There are 9 families from our adoption agency. we have all seemed to have formed a very close and special bond as we tour this contry and wait for our daughters. We have spent several hour talking about the girls, how we came to their names, our family lifestyles... It is so nice having this "extended family".

Tommy and Adam - I miss you very much. It is had to believe that this is the first time I have been away from you for such a long period of time. Tommy, you would have loved the Wall. I picked up a very special gift for you while I was there. I really think you will love it. Guess what... there are no punch buggies in China. I guess you will be racking up the points at home.

Gerry - I really miss you. I wish you were here to help bring home our daughter. You would love it here.

Well I have to get going... off to Tiananmen Square and the Summer Palace.

Later
Laura and Kaitlin

Hi everyone,

So much to talk about. We have been busy packing, shopping, and cleaning so that in 2 weeks mom and I can leave for China. It is hard to believe that in 2 1/2 weeks I will be holding our precious daughter.

We have official been invited to China and now have our "Travel Invitation". It looks so nice! They also included an additional original so that we can have one as a keepsake for Kaitlin when she is older. We are busy trying to find "clean", unmarked, undamaged $100 bills... not an easy task. Most of the pre-liminary adoption paper work has been done, they just need to be noterized and signed. I am in the process of writing lists for Gerry for while he is home for the 2 weeks with the boys such as how and what to expect with Tommy's homework... It surely will be an adventure for everyone.

Blessings to all
Laura, Gerry, Tommy and Adam

Saturday, February 19, 2005 1:57 PM CST

Finally!!! We have our travel appoval (TA) and we know when we will have our precious daughter in our arms. Gerry will be home with the boys, alone (Hee Hee), From March 19th to April 2nd. Mom and I will be leaving for China on March 19th, arriving in Beijing March 20th. We will spent 2 days in Beijing touring the sights. On March 23rd we fly to Nanning and we will receive Kaitlin that same day (yipeeee!!!!). The adoption will be finallized (from the Chinese perspective) on the 24th. At some point we will fly to Guangzou for our consulate appointment and Kaitlin's visa approval March 31st. On April 2nd we leave from Hong Kong and return home. At some point after returning home, we will have to re-adopt Kaitlin due to Indiana state laws since Gerry will not be traveling with us.

S0... 4 weeks from today we will be on our way to bring Kaitlin home to her forever family; can't wait!!!

Love to all
Laura, Gerry, Tommy, Adam and Kailtin

Saturday, February 5, 2005 7:14 AM CST

Hi everyone,

Kaitlin is getting so big. Our Social Worker called this past week to give us an up-date. Kaitlin is now 27" and weighs about 18.5 lbs (usually weights are with the girls fully clothed). She has 2 teeth!!! We are all going crazy waiting for our Travel Approval and travel dates. With Chinese New Year starting next week I am starting to think that we won't hear anything until after February 16th when the celebration is over. The last group from our adoption agency is scheduled to return March 9th. My hopes are that we will leave about March 7th-9th. You just never know with these things.

Tommy started swimming at school and is having a blast. He has also been helping take care of some newly hatched chicks at the High School. Of course, he thinks they all need to come home with us; all 37!!! I don't think so.

Adam has been doing so well after his surgery. No more breathing problems, no more choking in his sleep... he is a new, happy, and energetic little boy. His true personallity is shinning through.

Hugs and Kisses
Laura, Gerry, Tommy, Adam, and Kaitlin

Friday, January 21, 2005 6:29 PM CST

Everyone is in love with Kaitlin. Tommy took her pictures to school to show his class. If you show Adam her picture and ask if that is his little sister Kaitlin he will look at you and say "no... that is my little Katie." I just want to get her home and kiss those sweet baby cheeks. Gerry is excited to get her home and have a "daddy's girl" to spoil.

Our agency has just announce travel arrangements for December people. Looks like the last group will get back around March 9th. So we should travel shortly after they return. Seems like forever!!!

Love to all
Gerry, Laura, Tommy, Adam and Kaitlin

Wow!!! What a week. Referrals were sent Tuesday January 4th. They were expected to arrive in the states at the end of the week ... and that's happened. On Thursday 1/5/05 the first referral postings were made. All through Thursday and Friday I watched the postings and pictures of those precious little girls appear on the screen. What a thrill. We have to wait through the weekend before we see our sweet little girl. Our adoption agency has all of our documents from China translated prior to being sent to the States. Rumor has it that we should be notified Monday or Tuesday this week!!! I can hardley wait. BRING ON THE REFERRALS.

Friday, December 24, 2004 9:41 AM CST

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all. We wish our family and friends a wonderful, blessed holiday season.

Santa came early to our house. He left a letter for Tommy and Adam saying that he would stop by Today because he knows that we will be and Grandma and Grandpa Sweetpeas house for Christmas. we plan to go to the Christmas eve service at 4:00 then come home for dinner, relax and open presents.

Looks like thing will not be calming down much after the holidays. Adam will need to back to the hospital for surgery Dec. 28th. They will be working on his ears again, put new tubes in, and remove both the adnoids and tonsils. Poor little guy. I guess someone will be eating ice cream until his heart is content.

On the adoption front: June referrals have come in which means we are officially NEXT!!! At this time we are expecting a referral 1st or 2nd week of January and possible travel in early March.

Merry Christmas to all from our house to yours and God's blessing to everyone.
Love Gerry, Laura, Tommy and Adam

Hi everyone,

What a week!!! Birthday parties, company, Christmas parties... Just what you would expect for this time of year.

Tommy was moved just before Thanksgiving into the accelerated 1st grade class and is now doing 2nd grade Math and Reading. He loves his new class and seems to be doing well with the adjustment. He continues to bring home A's ans B's. Way to go brother!

Looks like thing will not be calming down much after the holidays. We just got word that Adam will need to back to the hospital for surgery Dec. 28th. They will be working on his ears again, put new tubes in, and remove both the adnoids and tonsils. Poor little guy. I guess someone will be eating ice cream until his heart is content.

Tuesday, November 30, 2004 1:30 PM CST

Sorry for the laps in updates. Things have been very crazy lately at school and at home. Tommy has been VERY busy with homework. After doing so well with first semester grades he was tested and recently moved into the gifted and talented program at school. The poor child has nearly 4 weeks of material (escpecially math) to get caught up on. He really loves his new class and seems to be doing well. Adam has been in and out of the doctor's office tyring to determine if he will need to go back in for surgery and have the tubes replaced in his ears. We certainly don't want him to go through all the problems Tommy had with his ears. Next appointment is Dec. 7th.. so we shall know more by then.

Everyone had a wonderful, and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday. The day after, we went tree hunting at Whispering Pines. The trees were just amazing. It was hard to find a bad one and even more difficult to pick "the tree" with so many choices.

On the adoption front:
Rumor has it that June people should receive their referrrals at the end of this week or the beginning of next. That means WE ARE NEXT!!! We can hardly wait to see that sweet little face.

Love to all

Wednesday, October 27, 2004 1:14 PM CDT

What a great week!!! Tommy got his report card: A (Math), A (spelling), A (reading), A- (phonics), S (penmenship). We are very proud of him. Adam went to the pumpkin patch with his day care. He came home with a little pumpkin that the decorated with stickers. He was so excited about his "punkim" that he slept with it last night.

On the adoption front:
LOTS OF RUMORS!!! One rumor is that our dossier and those who are also LID of July are in the matching room. This is where the CCAA matches us with our precious daughter. Another rumor is that the next batch of referrals will include May and half of June, and that the December referrals will be the remainder of June and all of July (that's us). We could potentially have a picture for our Christmas cards!!!!!

It is so hard to believe how fast the time has gone. It seems like yesterday that I was turning our completed Dossier to the adoption agency. Now we could be only 2 months away from seeing that sweet little face.

Love to all

Thing are going well here. Tommy just finished the first semester at school we should get his report card next week. Adam is really starting to love art and coloring. He also enjoys "reading" books.

Our family plans on going to the annual neighborhood bon fire. It is usually a great time; friends, family, hay rides and a huge bon fire. I know the boys will enjoy themselves. I just hope we don't get rained out.

The CCAA is done with their holiday and the referrals came rolling in yesterday. Our agency is saying that they received about 27 referrals for the month of April. We are still expecting to have ours at the beginning of January.

Saturday, October 2, 2004 12:50 AM CDT

We have had a busy week (as usual). Tommy passed his Taekwondo test and was promoted to blue belt. He has been watching the video tape of the testing all week. He was so excited because he broke his first board all by himself. I hope by next week to have some new pictures to post. Adam brought a bunch of artwork home and was thrilled to have his paintings hung on the refrigerator. He loves to paint but does not like getting his fingers messy.

We had our travel meeting at the adoption agency Thursday and had the opportunity to meet several of the families that we might travel with in China. The CCAA is on vaction until Oct. 8th so we don't expect referrals for another 10-15 days. Referrals comming in will be all of April however, I'm curious to see if they include part of May.

Friday, September 17, 2004 1:50 PM CDT

Wow, what a busy week!!! We had testing for Taekwondo last night (Thursday 9/16). Tommy did very well and broke his board all by himself! It was the first time he didn't need any help. Adam has really gotten attached to books. He loves the book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" He has the whole book memorized and will "read" it to himself over and over again. Gerry is getting ready for another business trip, and I had to prepare for labs for my students and parent open house. Every one is looking forward to a nice relaxing weekend.

ADOPTION NEWS:

30 families from our adoption agency received referrals for their daughters. It included all of March LIDs. If referrals continue at this rate then our best estimate is that we would receive ours beginning of January. Another rumor is that Aprils batch will arrive before the end of the month due to a closing of the CCAA for the first week of October. We will keep you posted!

Monday, September 6, 2004 6:20 PM CDT

We received our "brown envelop" this week. This is a special envelop that contains the documents that we will need to complete the adoption in China. It has the paperwork for Sarah's visa, medical exam, passport forms, maps of the consulate region... We are so excited, yet it is a bitter sweet milestone. From now until we receive our referral there will be no more phone calls or mail regarding the adoption. Now we just need to wait and be patient.

We spent a peaceful weekend at my parents; went for walks, got caught up on some sleep, watched some TV, and did some shopping at the scrapbook store. Hope everyone enjoyed their holiday as much as us.

Sunday, August 29, 2004 7:14 AM CDT

What a wonderful week. Adam is asking to use the potty. He sits on it alot, but no hits. Tommy got 5 A+, and 1 A- for his papers at school. He went to all his special areas, and I think was most impressed with art class and library. Gerry is preparing for several business trips this month. One in the beginning of August, the other at the end. Work went well for me. The students converted a metric recipe for chocolate chip cookies to standard measure, then had to prepare the dough. I get to spent this afternoon baking 4 batches of cookies.

We are one step closer to Sarah. Our social worker called to let us know that we have a LID (log in date). Our LID is July 22nd. A LID is the official notification that China has received and accepted our application to adopt. Rumor has it that our groups' dossiers have already passed through the review room. The next steps are: the waiting room, the matching room (that's when we will be matched to our daughter), and finally a referral (when we get the information and picture of that sweet little face). At this rate we may have our referral for Sarah around to Christmas!!!Enjoy the week. Later.

Saturday, August 21, 2004 6:56 PM CDT

Big changes this week for just about everyone in the family. Tommy began school on Thursday. He loves first grade, said he will like his teacher forever and ever, he has his own desk, but the food is terrible!!! Adam is in day care full time, his friends are Isaac and Michael, and if you ask him if he wants to use the potty at school he will say "no way". I went back to work. The high school is a whole new world. If things continue as well as they were last week, I think I will prefer teaching High school over middle school. Well only 178 days of school left (Ha Ha Ha)

Hi everyone. We had a very interesting week. Grandma Simons came to visit from New York, the boys went to the Children's Museum, Tommy got to sleep at the Mariott Hotel with his Grammie, and Adam was spoiled with having all the toys to himself. Everyone had a real good time, with the exception of one "little" misfortune. On Tuesday Tommy was playing with a friend. His friend got ahold of a hammer and accidentaly hit Tommy in the head with the claw end. So... we spent part of Tuesday afternoon at the hospital. Tommy got patched up and had to promise to lay low for 2 days. We managed to get through with a little help from ice cream, cookies and SEVERAL Pokemon videos. By Friday he was back in action.

No word from the China front. However rumors circulating suggest another round of refferals may come at the end of the month.

So long untill next week.

This mailing date is a special milestone in the process called a DTC date (Date To China). Our adoption agency has told us that the current wait from DTC is about 6-7 months. We are hoping to have a picture of Sarah by January. Now is the hard part...waiting!!!
