So glad to hear the good reports from your doctor visits. I am sure it's kind of strange to even think about transitioning to long care survivor care. But what a blessing!! Joey, you know even the big guys don't like those needle pokes. That's kind of how Matt felt yesterday too when they put his IV line in for chemo. You are such a brave young man! Glad to read all is busy and well. Once Matt gets done with classes for the summer Joey we have to get you two guys together! It's been way too long since we have seen you. Your always in our prayers!

Good luck today, Guys! I am sure all will be well! As for the cough, we've got it, too! I asked Dr. Richards about it yesterday and he said, "Yeah, he and everyone else in the world has the same cough." LOL....guess we are "normal!"

Wow Joey,
I am behind on checking your site. Congratulations on celebrating your 10th birthday. The meal your mom made for you sounds yummy except maybe for the green jello. Glad you got your favorite food on your special day. Pretty soon it will warm up and you can start swinging that baseball bat again. Matt is really itching to play baseball again since he missed his senior season last year because we were in Rochester. I don't think Le Center will have a team for his age this year so I told him he should start looking around a little at other towns if he really wants to try to play again. I think he will be a bit rusty if he does play. He might need some tips from you! Glad things are going well.

Seems to me that you make every day a special one with your great attitude and award winning smile. Glad to hear you are becoming quite the basketball player. Bet you are looking forward to baseball season too. Did you hear Matt is going to be working at Target Field? You don't have to worry about tickets though thanks to Grandpa.

My son Darrel designed the BAC logo on Joey's jersey (he's the artist of the family) and my husband is the commissioner for BAC Inhouse basketball! I work the concessions on weekends at the high school, so when your there on the 13th for pictures, stop by and say hi! It's all volunteer - but its such a wonderful program. Maybe say thanks if you see jeff... he gets a lot of flack and little thanks for all the months, hours years, he's put into the program! glad Joey enjoys it soooo much!

Love the basketball picture. In no time Joey will have you all converted to a basketball family. Being a basketball parent for many, many years I can say it's really a lot of fun to watch and fun to see your child progess in their skills. Even though Matt graduated we have to satisfy our basketball urge by going to the high school games anyway. Deputy Dave's son plays on Le Center's team. He's a big guy but can get up and down that court! So glad all is busy and well!

I think it's great that Joey wants to learn to knit. The principal at my kids catholic school in NE Minneapolis has had a knitting club since she has been there to teach both boys & girls to knit. There are quite a few boys in it.

Hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful. We are certainly thankful that we have met you! I love the picture on your home page. It's just classic! Everytime we get a chance to read your journal we just laugh. Joey, you are just one in a million! Some of the things you come up with. I do have to tell you that when Matt was investigating classes last week for what they call J term at Gustavus (One class taken for the entire month of January) one that he mentioned (because other guys have taken it)was knitting. Now, I am not sure why but for some reason Joey and Matt seem to have the same thought process. Any explantion for that? I suppose it would be nice to have a home made knit scarf...We continue to keep you in our prayers.

Joey and family,
Haven't visited your site in a while. Stopped by today and I see our name in the journal entry. Thanks Mike. Dennis and I went to a grief group event yesterday at Childrens. Met others in the same boat. We made a support circle mobile. I had to come up with names of those who have supported me through my grief. My CB family is definitely "someone I can talk to about my grief". What a great support system!
Joey, I hope your finger is doing OK. When you learn to bunt, you'll want to protect those fingers too. Listen to your coach (or dad).
Have a great weekend,

Joey,
O.K. so I think the snowmen on your home page are a little much but that's O.K. Have to keep our sense of humor I guess. Did you get to go out and throw a couple of snowballs at least? We are sad the Twins are done aren't you? But they sure were fun to watch. Bridget got to go to the Gopher's homecoming game last weekend at the new stadium with a friend. She said it was really fun and not too cold so that was good. We sure would love to have you come to a Wildcats game if it fits your schedule. Deputy Dave's son has been hurt. He fractured his fibula and was out a couple of games. He's ready to get back in there and play now though. The Cat's play in Le Center on Wed. and next Wed. in Medford and then the playoffs start. Not sure if any of those fit your schedule but if so let me know. I am going to send an e-mail with my phone number to dad and he can call me if one of these games would work. Hope that everyone in your house is better now. Thanks for always thinking about Matt. We continue to always keep you in our prayers.

Hi guys... I got this from Nicks site, hopefully you won't mind that I include it here! Check on you often....
Let's get the word out! There is a movement in the pediatric cancer world to get the hit TV show "The Doctors" to do a show on childhood cancer awareness. Currently, we are in the #1 spot and nearing 27,000 votes!

We need to be heard, so let's bombard their site with votes. Please go to "The Doctors" website and VOTE, VOTE, VOTE! Here's how:

1. Go to http://www.thedoctorstv.com/produce/home

2. Register... this takes a few moments to "log-in". You need to CHECK YOUR EMAIL after you fill out your information for the link to activate your log-in THAN you can vote. I learned that the hard way :

3. Click on "Vote for Ideas".

4. Click on "Most Popular".

5. VOTE for "Childhood Cancer Awareness
Month".

6. (Optional) Add a comment about any
child you know of who has cancer or has
battled cancer.

Hello, glad things are going great with you guys. Are you guys going to the light of the night leukemia and lymphoma walk with year on October 3rd? I work for Kohls up here in Rogers and our work does things called A team events where we volunteer and donate money. For every 5 people that volunteer at work we donate 500.00. we have been volunteering for the last 2 years and this year our store is going to walk. Our team, so far has over 20 people! I'm so glad that we are walking this year beacause we have so far raised over 2,000.00! Jason(my son www.caringbridge.org/mn/jasonk) will also be joining for the walk. hope you guys can make it!

Hi Brunners~
So glad to see you are as busy as ever. That means normal and normal is good. Hey Joey, I think we should connect on one of those Le Center football games Deputy Dave wrote to you about if it fits your schedule and you want to. They are lots of fun. It's kind of going to be nice after all of these years to be in the bleachers and not have to be the quarterbacks mom!! Stressful! Have you gotten all your school supplies yet? Hey Joey, You know you are gonna have to get together with Matty and come watch my little guy play football here in Le Center. We have a tough team every year! I bet Theresa could evenget you close to the players. Maybe bring a ball and we can get the team to sign it at least some of them for sure. Dusty is Matts friend. He weighs about 245 and is 6-1 inches. He plays D line and D-end and offensive guard. He is also the punter.

I hope you like all the things I sent you, I am trying to get you something really cool if someone comes thru for me. Keep sending Matt those nice comments.

Take care

It was so great to finally meet you on Sunday. Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy lives to come to Matt's benefit. It means so much to us. And Joey, you are as amazing in person as I knew you were just by reading your Caringbridge. The sparkle in your eyes and the smile on your face is so infectious. It helps so much to see a healthy young person who is a cancer survivor. It gives me so much hope for Matt's future. Thanks again!! Congratulations on your 3rd place finish on the long throw contest. You must have a strong arm. Hope the Minnesota Twins are keeping on eye on you for the future! Congratulations on your great baseball season. Isn't it great how Dairy Queen can just help to make things seem O.K! Yum. Wow! You exhaust me with all of your activites. Joey, your baseball team must be really fun to watch. I bet you are a great player. Undefeated so far is impressive. A father/son game would be so fun. What great memories. Bridget was also at the Twins/Astros games on Sunday with her Aunt and Uncle and a friend. She wasn't happy that her favorite player (Joe of course!) was only DH'ing. So happy that you are having a great summer doing fun things with family and friends. We continue to pray for you!

Hi Mike- it was great to see you again today and to hear Joey is doing so well :) What a reel of emotions it must have been to be asked by your employer to sit in on today's recruitment of Light the Night- both good and bad I'm sure. Either way, it's an honor to be on the same team and I look forward to seeing your family at the walk :)

I am so glad to read that all continues to be going well, albeit busy, at your house.

Your dad's posts, Mike, continue to be sweet as ever.

I read Megan's paper and was duly impressed. I smiled as I read about the Pac-Man game. In a tiny way, our family is part of Joey's story!

Hi Mike! CONGRATULATIONS Joey for 4 years! What an absolutely wonderful feeling. Want to know the cool thing? Our lecture (after you left) was on BURKITTS and others... I felt soooo knowledgable along with the rest of the class because of YOU today! I'm going to put a very condensed version of what the students said they learned:

DESCRIBE WHAT YOU LEARNED:
side effects vary
strength, courage, spirit
focus on patient
everyone is affected so differently
be honest
tell the truth - up to a certain point
I thought people with cancer where always down
I will be a better listener!
Explain what you are doing before you do it
I'm not there for a "job", but helping people fighting for their lives.
How different yet how similar the experiences are
I appreciate the energy these people had to talk about themselves and the sacrifice they made to be here.
I thought cancer patients were weaker and more fearful
Focus on the whole family
I would LUV to do a clinical rotation in oncology now!
I thought treatment was all the same
I thought cancer was for those that were old
I thought cancer was for those who didn’t take care of themselves by making poor lifestyle choices
How important Caringbridge is

“I thought cancer treatment of children is sad, depressing, etc. I learned that the kids are happy, energetic and enjoy themselves despite feeling sick from treatment.

"How patients are affected (their lives) the sudden change from NO WORRY to EXTREME worry. I thought they were like very very sad people. BUT now i KNOW they learn to use positive attitude to get thru it."

"I was amazed to see how positive everyone was. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to stay upbeat. It emphasized how important compassion truly is"

THANKS Mike, I mean that. You have the gift to speak!

Hello Brunner family - so looking forward to meeting you at the Century College Nursing Cancer Panel tomorrow!!! I actually met your daughter at last year's Relay for Life when the Blazettes were cheering on the survivors during the walk - I was the last one around the track, so very weak as I had just started chemo the month before. Thank you so much for adding me to your prayer list!!! The power of prayer works wonders, I am very convinced.
I wish you all the best!!

So is "rolling an ankle" a Minnesota phrase, like "rubber binders" and "do you want to come with"? I've not heard it in other places. Maybe I'm too quick to use the word "sprain," which might be used for a more serious injure? Anyway, hope all goes well with the crutches and temporary cast. It's hard to have an injury so near to the end of activities for the year! Jane

I just wanted to give both of the Brunner "boys" a BRAVO for the presentation today at the Red Cross seminar. I was one of the blood banker's in attendance. I appreciated your talk from the aspect of being a parent of a sick child myself and also as a healthcare worker. Great job! I cannot believe how much Joe has grown!! Amazing how time flies. Thanks again for taking the time out to talk to all of us. That "human" factor and family appreciation hits home more than you will ever know. My condolances on your recent loss, as well. Just stopping in to say hi! I am so sorry to hear of your Grandma's/Mom's death. Praying for your family's peace and comfort and for smiles and laughter at all of the good memories I am sure you have of her. We have had a couple of rough weeks but today the doctors cautiously mentioned maybe outpatient...we will see. Joey, your baseball picture is awesome. Matt is also a baseball player and is hoping to still get back to Le Center during the high school season and get to play in a game or two. Got to have goals. Maybe some day when you two are able to meet you can throw the ball around together. That would be great. Matt's coach doesn't like the wrist bands a lot of players wear but this year his team is wearing them with Matt's initials and baseball number on them in his honor. Pretty cool that they always have him in their mind and thoughts. Praying that things continue to well for you. Hi to your family. Thanks for all the notes and reassurance you give us on Matt's site! It's appreciated.

Hi all of the Brunners, Tom and I wish to tell you how much we appreciated the lovely service you all planned for LaVonne! She probably had a few things to say in planning also. We felt as if it was a true celebration of her very productive and loving life. The personal eulogy was one that was truly from the hearts of all of you. Be sure that all of you have a copy of it for your family history. LaVonne won her battle and God took her peacefully home. In the midst of all of the "fallout" which will be for quite a while, take each day, enjoy, and savor all of the notes and personal wishes from those who will continue to hold you in prayer. Resurrection day has come for LaVonne and will soon be here for us to celebrate along with your Easter egg hunt, which you must carry on for posterity. Hopefully the weather will straighten out by that time! Ice is out of Lake Francis now, wood ducks are nesting in the trees, and some flower tips have popped up so the green is to follow. We are open to any visits to Elysian and pontoon ride for any of you should you get down this way. And, of course, Lake Francis is great for lap swimming, diving off of the raft, and throwing in a fishing pole. Tom does some mean brats on the grill also! Rest in His Peace, our love, Sandy and Tom

Dear Joe,

My family and I had the opportunity to meet your dad last night at the Pine Tree Classic planning meeting. My son Luke is 10 years old and is also a cancer survivor like yourself and he is looking forward to meeting you. It sounds like you are both sports nuts, so you each now have a few things in common. By the way, your dad is a very special man who is very proud of you. It is great to know that there are people in the world that love you unconditionally.

I hope that you and your family have a great weekend and hope to see you and your dad soon.

I so enjoy checking in on your family and how well Joe and his siblings are doing!

If anyone is interested in helping childhood cancer get some attention, please consider taking part in the following:
The Obama transition team is taking open questions for what Americans want them to do. And WE want them to put pediatric cancer at the top of the list!!! This takes less than a minute to do.

1. Go to http://change.gov/openforquestions
2. Register.
3. Search for "childhood cancer."
4. Vote for the question from AJ's Dad.

There are several questions about childhood cancer, so unless we concentrate on THIS ONE QUESTION, votes will get spread thin and we want to be in the top ten!!!

Thank you also for the list of people you post with each journal entry. My cousin's little boy is "Luke in Seattle" and he finished his ALL program this fall and is doing well.

Wishing your family a wonderful Holiday season. Both of my kids 'perform' at school masses as well. Between my husband and folks we've not missed one in a combined 11 years of school. The kids are always grateful. Hope Joey remembers his school pants more often, although it does make for an enjoyable read.

That poor Tooth Fairy!! These winters are so tough on her. One winter she forgot to stop at our house on Dec. 23rd and left a note on Christmas Eve saying she was so thankful Santa allowed her to ride on his sleigh, as her wings kept freezing up! In fact, that was the year of the unfortunate huge Red River flood and we were living in eastern ND, where there was tons of snow.

Joey, are you done making your lists for Christmas? I don't work today and need to try to finish up my shopping. I always enjoy Dad's updates and keep you guys in my prayers!!!

Wow - I feel like I haven't been here in forever - funny how life takes you away sometimes. I like to think of that as a good thing because it usually means everyone is doing okay. I have to tell you Mike, because of you, I think of Joe on a daily basis. Alex has Mrs. Maxwell at St. John's and I found out about green apple days from you and Joe. Alex always looks shocked when I ask him what apple he had today. LOL Thank GOSH I haven't gotten the red word yet. I can't tell you thank you enough for letting me know about St. John's. Hi,

I am the Dad of AJ, a 14 year old cancer victim. I wanted to make you aware (maybe again) and enlist your help for the Cure Childhood Cancer petition! Our goal is to have a one-hour special on network TV devoted solely to CHILDHOOD CANCER to raise awareness. And publish a parent-written book about our miraculous children, with all proceeds going to CureSearch.

The GREAT news is that CureSearch (story on the Petition), LIVESTRONG(story on the Petition) and Alex’s Lemonade Stands have ALL written about the Petition on their websites! And TX Children’s and DUKE have both allowed us to setup paper versions inside the hospitals! So this is a SERIOUS EFFORT AND WE ARE MAKING HEADWAY! Right now we are at over 11,000 signatures! But we need your help! If you can please make your readers aware, email it around, and give just a little publicity, I know we can make this happen!

Thanks again,

Hey Mike - yep this is for you and ONLY you - HAPPY FATHER'S DAY! In this CB world we see SO SO SO many moms but not nearly as many DADS keeping the CB fires burning. We learn from you, we laugh with you and we have been scared with you - whether with Joe or with your mom. You're such an awesome dad - I know that yet I've never *met* you. Before I went to bed tonight I wanted to go around CB land and wish the Dad's I *knew* a Happy Father's Day! You were the first next to my own Dad and my hubby. Hi... school is almost over! Say.... would the StarTrib be insterested in pursuing the following comment from a fellow CB writer? I found this interesting and copied it from her post....

The American Cancer Society gives less than 1 percent of it's funds to pediatric cancer research. Do you know what the most common pediatric cancer is? Well, it's leukemia. And yet, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society gives less than 5 percent of their funds to pediatric cancer. (But they love to have our kids involved in their Team in Training, as "front men" for their groups. Nothing like a bald headed sad little kid to pull in the dollars, huh?)

And the kicker of it all? They are holding this nationwide telecast in OUR month…Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month!!! Yep, I am “jealous” once again. Jealous that “other” cancers get recognition and support. I guess there just isn’t “enough” children dying of cancer to get the attention of the media moguls. Maybe they would think differently if they were the parents of Delton, Elijah, and Ethan. These three cancer warriors lost their lives in the past 3 weeks to the “good” and “curable” cancer......

GOSH, I sure hope it isn't true... it would be a shame. I know your busy with grad parties (Lord, so are we!) but if you or people you know are around River Hills and Cliff Saturday, come visit "River Hills Days" garage sale - we are having a fundraiser for "Big Sky Kids" cancer camp. Davis has gone every year and he also is counseling the younger kids in July. We are on River Hills Drive! We are selling cotton candy and regular candy and popcorn.

Good Morning Sleepy Head -

The silken thread of a cobweb
catches the first drops of morning dew.
They hang like a string of jewels
to sparkle in the first rays of the sun.

The fragrance of an awaking rose
whose scent wafts through the morning air,
as its petals unfurl one by one
to greet the morning sun.

The chorus of the morning birds
whose sweet song of praise,
rejoice the waking of a brand new day,
then alight to fly the freeways of the sky.

Thinking of you today!

God Bless,

Hey Mike and Family,
Great to hear from you Mike! As you say and I agree, we need to aim at getting together to go over the last 30 years or so. I have seen Jeff twice since I started back to the office part time. What a delight to hear that he says I look great! …But did he tell you in comparison to what!!! Its been great to watch your family grow over the past months Mike, and I really admire how you all rally around your parents. Your man Joe-Joe and all those beautiful children – what treasure. And you’ve helped me find Nicky Deyo – I think about him with just about every breath and step I take. The CB sites have meant a great deal to me pulling through this recovery process.

Thinking of you this morning, Big Guy! The arm pokes are no fun, but you are way stronger than a crazy needle! You will do great...I know this because you are JOE BRUNNER (the great)!!!! The kids are heading to school, ready to ask for prayers for you from their classmates, too. So, by 7:40, you will have 37 extra prayers heading your way! I am giving blood today and will be getting poked, too. I'll be brave if you do! I'll be thinking of you, Kiddo! Can't wait to hear the great results! I bet you made Dr. Bostrom's day by being on the schedule today! I think he has a special place in his heart for you! Go get 'em, Buddy! Hope to see you soon!!!!

Joey and family,

Just wanted to let you know that we'll be thinking of you tomorrow and sending extra prayers your way. It always feels good to get those check-ups out of the way.

It takes a pretty special ballplayer to wear the #7. In our house that's the "prized" number and Matt's pretty pleased to be back in that jersey again. We think you're going to have an awesome season on the ballfield.

Take care...

Hello Brunner Family,
I just wanted to stop in and let you know I'll be thinking about you tomorrow as you head to Children's.

Wow, what questions Joe has for you. My boys are 7 and 8 and I just can't think of a time that they've been that curious. Well maybe sometimes. Their names are Joe and Tyler and they also play base ball, they are on the Oriols. I'll post some pictures of them after their fist game on May 3rd.

Well thinking of you always, and also sending some extra prayer's for your mom.

Mike, It sounds like Joe is feeling really good and I'm sure his tests will be just fine but I know how apprehensive you can feel just before those tests. My son has his on May 21 and for the first time I am really worried because he seems so very tired and is napping every chance he gets. I don't like seeing that change in him.I'll be praying for Joe and waiting for those great results. Marilyn

Hi Joey and all of the Brunners! You have not heard from me much, but I just had to jot a note. I am the one who gave your dad some ice skating lessons way back in the "olden days." I suppose that is where you get your wonderful skating ability too! So many times while reading this site and the absolutely wonderful, hilarious, and very touching updates, I am in STITCHES. Just thought I had to write and tell you that you come up with the best questions for your dad to answer. This of course means that you are learning and paying attention so well in school. My, what energy you have and such a love for so many things. You know what? I honestly get very tired and worn out just reading about all of your and your family's activities! Ha Ha! I have to heave a sigh when I read everything! Keep it up! Such fun you are having! I guess Tom and I were almost that busy with our girls once, but "whew" you guys never stop! Such a wonderful family you are and so caring about each other. Keep it up and keep your folks running. Bet your mom and sister are really enjoying their time away. You will keep them busy for days telling them what all happened this week! Keep on keeping going and having such fun. AND keep your mom and dad's mind sharp by asking tons of questions! Our love to you all, We are keeping in good contact with your grams and gramps also. Love, Sandy and Tom

I haven't written before but I felt I just had to tell you about my cousin who six years ago at age 66 had inoperable pancreatic cancer and was told to go home and get his affairs in order. He decided to go with the agressive treatment of radiation and chemo. It was not easy but it did shrink his tumor to about the size of a walnut. They stopped treatment and with just medication now he is still living a full life. He goes back about every three months and the tumor that was left has shrunk to almost nothing.

I am SO sorry to hear the news about your mom, Mike. When LuAnn came over after the taping yesterday she filled us in just a little bit and first thing this AM I went to check in on Joey site. This dreaded cancer thing just keeps swirling among us all. Some good friends of ours in the neighborhood have been battling leukemia and Mike's chemo regimen is pretty rigorous. He just finished the first phase and had a BM biopsy and the results were not the best. So, Team Berg will be springing into action and adding both Nick and your mom (what is her name?) to our prayer list. I will pray that your mom has the courage to face this challenge and that the chemo brings about miraculous results. We DO believe in miracles and we will pray for nothing less!

Lots of love,

Hey Brunners!
Mike, your Mom is in our prayers. Whenever there is something we can do please let us know. Your prayers have counted so greatly for us. Health issues with parents can be almost as hard as with children in my own experience. ...So with that you are well prepared. And so far God hasn't challenged us with anything that we couldn't deal with. Your patient listener is a phenomenal observer who produces remarkable solutions. Our wish for you is to be gentle with yourselves.

I forgot to set the DVR & have been searching KARE 11's website with no luck. Any links? I should have also mentioned that Braydon has had multiple blood transfusions, mostly during surgery. Now that I'm working @ 3M & they have the Red Cross come in, I ALWAYS donate. It's the easiest way that I know how to give back right now.
Have a great week!

Hello to our famous friends. Unfortunately, I was unable to see you on Kare, but we did get to see the Botz on the commercial. Thanks for representing all our families and praying the drive was a success. Have a good weekend!

Thinking of you guys today. Thanks so much for sending this message from all of us and for pinch hitting for the Botz family. Just wanted to let you know that we set the TIVO and will watch when we get home. I'm wearing my KIDS CAN shirt for support and good luck.
Have a great weekend.

Hello!I found your site through Gavin Rupp's, and when I was reading your prayer request I found my son's name on there, and I just wanted to thank you for that! It's truly amazing to have such wonderful people helping you pull through something like this. I will add your beautiful ( or should I say handsome) boy and your family to our daily prayers! Thanks for all you are doing for all the familys with people who are fighting cancer. I will be looking for you on the t.v!

All our love and prayers~ Ryan, Megan, and Logan
