Jonathan Lindsey

Welcome to Jonathan's Leukemia Web Page.

He was diagnosed with ALL on February 20, 2002 and is currently in the the Long Term Maintanence phase of chemo. This cycle of chemo will last until April 30, 2005.

My team in Training (TNT) Triathlon far exceeded my expections. There were about 1500 people in the race, 500 of them here with TNT. As a group we raised over 1.7 million dollars to help fund research for a cure for Leukemia and Lymphoma. I cannot even express what an aweseome experience it was to cross the finish line with so many others who cared so much about people like my son. My goal was to finish in under 4 hours and my time was 3 hours and 38 minutes. I felt GREAT at the finish line and was able to join my other team mates that evening dancing the night away at the victory party. When I went into this I intended to do one event and be done for the rest of my life. Now I am seriously considering doing a number of triathlons next season ... I'd really like to do another TNT one, too (and maybe even a half-ironman???? -- I may seriously be crazy!).

Please sign the guest book -- it is such an encouragement to all of us! Thanks for visiting.

The whole gang, enjoying my favorite activity!

This is a photo of my grandmother, my father, and his two sisters. The blonde headed girl on my grandmother's lap is Sharon ... my aunt who died of leukemia in 1946 when she was 4.

Journal

The spinal tap went very well ... Jonathan and I had a nice time on the way down (he was much more relaxed) and I was able to distract him by doing a puzzle book once we were there. It was probably the easiest port access we've had. Maybe being able to talk about and vent his fears ahead of time really helped. Maybe it also helped that he knows the countdown is on -- only 3 more spinal taps and he is done! I got to watch again -- it was a little scary to watch how Jonathan is under sedation. He started coughing, but couldn't cough and it affected his breathing. Everything was fine -- the doctor was great about getting him stablized again, but my heart was beating pretty fast for a few seconds.

After the spinal tap we went to some of my favorite Middle Eastern grocery stores in the cities. I talked with the woman who was checking me out -- Jonathan asked her how to say "Thank you" in Arabic -- she said that she would teach me some Arabic if I came to the store on a regular basis. Oh, how I wish I could!!! We had a huge feast Friday night with pillau (A Kazakh rice and lamb dish), Kazakh tea, Middle Eastern bread, olives, hummous, tabouli, cherries, and yogurt with cucumbers & dill. Caleb ate so much rice I thought he was going to explode!

Andrew just came and showed me his finger nail that is about to fall off (from the sword accident last month). Its at times like that that I know my decision not to pursue medicine was a good one. I felt weak just looking at it!

Rachel's 4th birthday was yesterday. I have some great pictures that I will need to get up here soon. She was quite the "princess" -- cute and demanding. She told grandpa that he HAD TO BRING fresh raspberries if he wanted to come to the party. She beamed when he showed up with them and then proceeded to eat the ENTIRE package herself! Of course, grandpa was very pleased! I guess she reminds him of me when I was little because apparently I used to do the same thing.

Well, the boys are playing together nicely (for once!) and Rachel is happy playing with her birthday presents. I guess I should use this time to study for my exam that is later today.

Love, Melissa
