I know he is in heaven watching down over Daddy, Mommy and Big Sister Alexis. 2 years ago there was snow on the ground but nothing like we have today. In this world today, you never know when you will lose that special someone in your life. The grass is not greener on the other side. Be glad for what you have now and what you did have. January 3rd, a Visiting nurse came in do evaluate Nick and after two visits referred him to the Hospice program. Nicholas was admitted thru the Hospice program on January 17, 2001. Kelly is his nurse and is so kind and great to Nick! We noticed that Nick is more sleepy and is having less wet diapers. He has been running fever for 3-4 days now. Finally, I had blood work done to verify if there was any infection. His white blood cell count was normal which indicated no infection. I've found that the disease has progressed and is now in the brain stem which is controlling his body temperature. By the looks of things, Nicholas will have his WINGS sooner then I thought. It's tough knowing this is the end of the road, but I feel I've done all I could for him and he will be happier and not in pain. Nick was 17 months old on Saturday. If you are reading this journal, please keep him in your prayers along with Big Sister ALEXIS.

When Nicholas was 14 months (October), he lost his swallowing ability. After 3 days in the hospital we found that we could no longer able to give him any food by mouth. He has a suction machine that I use every day to suction out his secretions. He is also on a medication called Robinul which a side effect is to dry things up and this truly works. Everything has to be put thru the feeding tube now. I have found that switching to PediSure has made him gain weight. He eats 4oz every 3 hours and is sleeping all thru the night in his waterbed. In July, Nicholas was 12 lbs. Today he is 16 months old and is weighing in at 17 lbs 11 oz! I'm hoping he is my miracle baby..

Sunday, August 27, 2000 at 07:31 PM (CDT)

Nicholas is 1 year old today!! He now sleeps in a super single water bed and has been sleeping all night for us. He has a bottom tooth, a top tooth and another top tooth coming thru. He is eating more baby food then before.

Nicholas is 11 months old and was diagnosed with Krabbes Disease on April 24, 2000.It all started in 1999 with the birth of our 2nd child Nicholas. He was to be born on September 21, 1999 but came August 27, 1999 which was four weeks early. My pregnancy was great up until 34 weeks when I went into labor. I was given bed rest and medication to stop my contractions. Finally one week later, the bundle of Joy came. A baby BOY weighing in at 6lb 12.2 oz and 19 ½ inches long! He was fine in the hospital, normal and healthy. Once we got him home we noticed he was very fussy and irritable at times and arched his body. We thought it was the formula so we contacted our pediatrician, Dr. Henken at Jones, Daly and Coldren Associates, who advised it was colic. We knew something was wrong. After many trips to the doctor’s in a few days period I finally requested an upper GI to be done in November. Sure enough, he was diagnosed with Reflux. We tried medications to help the reflux but it seem to make him more irritable. There were many restless nights where he wanted fed every 2-3 hours. Cereal did not help, warm baths did not help so finally by 5 months old we noticed he still didn’t hold his head up straight and was only drinking 4 oz of formula. He didn’t hold his pacifier or toys and he was very irritable and constantly made his body stiff at times. Finally at 7 months old we told our pediatrician that something was wrong either a pulled muscle or something because he was not doing the others things a 7 or 8 month old should be doing. The pediatrician saw us and said it was developmental delay. I asked if we could be referred to a Neurologists. The pediatric neurologists, Dr. Barron was unable to see Nicholas till October. I finally fought my way and got in touch with an adult Neurologist. They advised they did not treat infants but was willing to see my son. We met with PA Neurology Associates on April 4, 2000. The neurologists set up an MRI which was done on April 13th. PA Neurologists got us an appointment with Dr. Barron on April 14th. Dr. Barron was upfront and honest with Ron and I and more less said according to the MRI reports, “ Your son may have a disease called Krabbes and this is a terminal illness” . To confirm the results, a DNA blood test had to be done. On Monday, April 17, we went to Hershey Medical Center to have the blood drawn and it was sent to Dr. Wenger’s lab in Philadelphia to be tested. It normally takes 6 weeks to get the results but since it was sent as a priority, we got the tests results one week later. On Monday, April 24, 2000 the blood test came back positive. I got the phone call at work from Dr. Barron stating he had the disease and my son was going to die by two years old. I had no words to reply at the time just tears fell from my eyes and thoughts as to why why why…..
Nicholas has an older sister Alexis who is five years old who does not have the disease, but could be a carrier. No tests have been done at this time.
My next step was to go to Dukes Hospital in North Carolina to see if a blood cord or bone marrow transplant could be done. After eight hours of driving down/ back and seeing three different doctors, we realized that a bone marrow or cord blood transplant was not a cure. I would have to stay in North Carolina for about four months total, he could reject the transplant, he had a 10% chance of a fatal and he would be in a wheel chair the rest of his life along with losing everything he does now, smiling, laughing and trying to move his hands and legs. I couldn’t see putting my son thru the pain. We decided to make him comfortable and enjoy him as long as we could.
So far, Nick is still eating and drinking well. He is on nerve medicine to relax his muscles. He loves showers and just being outside.
On July 3, 2000 Nick was admitted to Hershey Medical Center for mild dehydration He would not take his bottles and lost about 1 lb in 3 months April he weighed 15 lbs, June 6th he weighed 14.6 lbs and on July 3rd he weighed 14.2 lbs. On July 7th he had a G-Tube put in his stomach and he now weighs 14 ½ lbs.
