Hi everyone,
Sorry I haven't written in awhile.
Andrew has been doing really well, he has been in remission for 4 1/2 years!!! He is currently in grade ten and still playing basketball. This year he made the senior team. We had a new prosthesis made for Andrew this spring which he wears just about every day. Unfortunately it is still held in with glue, but looks GREAT. Very soon he will be having surgery to implant 3 small magnets in his orbit. This will allow him to apply and remove his prosthesis with very little effort and also will remove the possibility of it falling out on its own. Andrew is very excited about this opportunity. This year we decided not to hold Andrew's charity golf tournament and instead are planning a dinner / dance gala this fall in support of Andrew's fund at SickKids hospital in Toronto. Thank you all for your continued support and prayers.
Sincerely,
Len

Hi everyone,

I’m sorry I haven’t updated Andrew’s journal for awhile. Andrew recently had to have an unscheduled MRI, of course we were all on “pins & needles”. Great news though everything was clear. Dr. Malkin has also ordered a CT scan later this week just as a precaution. Andrew was a little upset because he had to remove his braces for the MRI. He has been busy playing rep basketball and is also the captain of his school basketball team He has had a growth spurt and I now look up to him in more ways than one. He has been nominated for the 2004 Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year and of course continues to live his life to the fullest and inspire us all.

I’ve been busy also planning the 4th Andrew Mizzoni Charity Golf Classic. This year’s tournament will be held on Thursday July 14th at Kleinburg Golf Club and once again will be in support of cancer research at the Hospital for Sick Children.

As always thank you for your support and prayers.

Sincerely, Len

Dr. Malkin just called with GREAT NEWS, Andrew’s latest CT scan was clear! Cancer free 18 months and counting, God Bless You. Andrew’s hockey team won the Toronto city championship this year. Andrew has developed a passion for the game of basketball and has decided to retire from hockey as a champion. He will pursue an opportunity to play rep basketball next season. There is no doubt in my mind that Andrew will succeed at whatever goal he sets for himself. Continue living your life to the fullest and keep chasing all your dreams, you are truly an inspiration to us all.

Love Always, Dad

Hi everyone,
Sorry I haven’t updated Andrew’s journal in awhile.
The dinner / dance was a great time, thank you to all those who supported us and who contributed to making our fundraiser a success. Another $25,000.00 was raised for the Andrew Mizzoni Cancer Research Fund. Andrew’s hockey team the Vaughan Rangers had a great season, they finished 2nd over all and had the best goals against in the league. They are currently in the playoffs and should advance to the finals this week. Andrew’s first 6 month follow up ct scan is on April 19th.

Happy 12th birthday Andrew!
This past year you have met every obstacle with strength and wisdom beyond your years. Your courage and perseverance has inspired many. Every time you step on the ice I am truly amazed at how you continue to play goal at such a high level. Many heads turn when you enter an arena. I often see parents pointing you out to their kids and I hear kids telling their parents “there’s Andrew”. I know you prefer to carry your own hockey bag, but always remember I am so proud to carry it for you. God Bless you Andrew, continued good health, keep chasing all your dreams and have a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Love Dad

Thursday, September 4, 2003 12:01 AM CDT

It’s been a great summer and thank God Andrew is doing well. He has had a growth spurt and is almost as tall as dad. Andrew’s really excited about his up and coming tour of Italy with his grandparents and Uncle Johnny. They leave this Saturday for 17 days. Today I received a letter from the Vatican and would you believe Andrew is going to have an audience with the Pope on September 10th. Tonight we start another hockey season and I have no doubt Andrew you will continue to live your life to the fullest and inspire us all.

God Bless You Andrew!
Love Dad

Well, the 2nd Annual Andrew Mizzoni Charity Golf Classic is now over. It was a great success with over 200 golfers attending and we were blessed with a beautiful day! We will have raised between $29,000.00 - $30,000.00 for this most worthy of causes. Rita and I have already decided to plan another dinner / dance gala for early in the new year.

Today we received Andrew's new prosthesis, it looks really nice and most of all it gives him another option besides wearing a patch.

More importantly, Andrew had his 3 month follow up ct scan today and Dr. Malkin just called to say that the scans were clear!!!

Sincerely, Len

Andrew's ct scan was clear!!!!
We were so anxious waiting for the results. It was great to finally receive some good news at this time of the year. Andrew was originally diagnosed in the spring of 2001 and then relapsed in the spring of 2002. Dr. Malkin has decided to remove his port hopefully by the summer and his next ct scan is scheduled for July. Andrew was excited yesterday about getting his prescription glasses which will serve two purposes, protection for his eye and also serve as a distraction when wearing his prosthesis which he should have in June.

The Andrew Mizzoni Charity Golf Classic will once again be held at Kleinburg Golf Club on Thursday July 17th. Our goal is to raise $35,000.00 for this most worthy of causes.

The Andrew Mizzoni Cancer Research Fund is currently supporting three area's of research at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Thank you for your prayers and continued support.

Sincerely, Len

Hi everyone,

I'm sorry I haven't updated Andrew's journal for a while. Everything is going well Andrew's next ct scan is on April 14th. Last week we investigated a prosthetic for Andrew's orbit, he should hopefully have one in two months. Andrew's hockey team had a very successful season they finished 3rd and went to the semi-finals. Andrew's basketball team won the championship. He only recently started to look at his orbit in the mirror and his first comment was, "dad, it doesn't look that bad". Andrew has not let his disability slow him down, he continues to live his life to the fullest and inspire us all.

The 2nd Annual Andrew Mizzoni Charity Golf Classic will be held on Thursday July 17th at Kleinburg Golf Club, please contact me if anyone is interested in attending.

Sincerely, Len

Hi Everyone,

Andrew's return to the crease was on Saturday December 21st. It was a day we will always cherish. That morning Andrew was on the front page of the Toronto Sun newspaper. There was also a wonderful article written in the Amateur Sports Weekly and the Vaughan Citizen. The game was covered by Molly Finlay of Global TV, which aired the documentary on the evening news as a "feel good" Christmas Story. Elliotte Friedman of the Score TV Network also covered Andrew's first game. Both camera crews did their interviews after the game from Andrew's bedroom. Prior to the game our good friend Steve the zamboni driver displayed Andrew's jersey on the zamboni as he flooded the ice. Andrew played well and preserved a 1-1 tie by making a great glove save in the dying minutes of the game. After the game Andrew was presented at center ice with a donation from the GTHL referee's in the amount of $4,000.00 for his cancer research fund. Both teams left the ice together gathered around Andrew and cheering his name as the spectators gave him a standing ovation.

Andrew has continued to receive overwhelming support from all levels of minor hockey. Through the link on the GTHL website Andrew has had over 13,000 visitors in the past 7 weeks to this site. The following is a list of teams that have contributed to the Andrew Mizzoni Cancer Research Fund, which totals almost $18,000.00.

Currently all chemotherapy and radiation treatments have been suspended due to the excellent results from the pathology report from Andrew's exenteration surgery. Andrew's first follow up CT scan is scheduled for January 9th.

Tuesday, November 26, 2002 at 04:01 PM (CST)

Hi everyone,
I apologize for taking so long to update Andrew's journal. This past week has been an emotional roller-coaster to say the least. Andrew's surgery went well and there were no complications. The exenteration surgery required the removal of his left eye and all the tissue in his orbit. Prior to surgery the decision was made to also remove his eyelids. The doctors and nurses were amazed that our brave boy did not require anything for pain. Andrew was only in the hospital for 2 days and was at the rink this past weekend cheering on his team. Dr. Malkin called this afternoon with the results of the pathology report and its GREAT NEWS, our "little" goalie has a 100% chance of shutting out Rhabdomyosarcoma cancer forever. He may still require some chemotherapy and or the implantation of radiation seeds in his orbit. Andrew continues to accept his situation with maturity beyond his years. We have yet to hear him complain or cry. Andrew's return to the crease should be in a few weeks.

We often hear about the negatives surrounding minor hockey, these past few weeks we have experienced first hand how the minor hockey community on every level has embraced one of their own. Through the link on the GTHL (Greater Toronto Hockey League) website Andrew has had almost 9,000 visitors to his site in just 4 weeks. Thank you all for your heartfelt words of support and prayers.

Sincerely, Len & Rita

Hi Everyone,

Andrew returned to the crease this week, he had two practices with his team and is really excited about starting this Saturday's game. His exenteration surgery is scheduled for November 19th at the HSC.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire hockey community. Through the GTHL website Andrew has had over 6000 visitors to his website in just two weeks. We have spent many hours reading the heartfelt words of support in his guest book. It has been truly wonderful and overwhelming.

We have been approached by a few teams regarding donations and organizing there own fundraising events in support of the Andrew Mizzoni Cancer Research Fund. Most recently the Duffield Devils Minor Bantam "A" team has made a very generous donation of $500.00 and issued a challenge for other teams to do the same. We gratefully welcome any gift to this most worthy of causes.

The Andrew Mizzoni Cancer Research Fund was established to support cancer research at the Hospital for Sick Children. Through our dinner dance and golf tournament in just 9 months we have raised over $65,000.00. In recognition of our fundraising efforts the HSC this past summer honored the Andrew Mizzoni Cancer Resarch Fund with the dedication of a plaque on their "Donor Wall".

If you would like to make a donation please make your cheque payable to the Andrew Mizzoni Cancer Research Fund and forward to the Hospital for Sick Children Foundation or to our address at 40 Islington Woods Crt. Woodbridge, Ontario L4L 9J1.

Please continue to pray for Our "Little" Goalie.

Sincerely, Len

Dr. Malkin called last night with the results of the pathology report, unfortunately Andrew will now require an exenteration surgery which will include the removal of his left eye and all the tissue in his orbit. The pathology report indicated that Rhabdomyosarcoma cells were present on the edge of the tissue removed, therefore there must be some remaining. This type of cancer is highly malignant. Relapsing so soon after his initial protocol and then still having cancer cells present after another 6 months of chemotherapy we now have to take more drastic measures to ensure that it doesn't spread. Andrew accepted this news with a maturity beyond his years. This will only delay his return to the net, I know we will see him on the ice again this season. Thank you to everyone who has visited Andrew's web site through the GTHL, your support has been timely and overwhelming. Please continue to pray for our "little" goalie.

Sincerely, Len

Dr. Malkin called last night with the results of the pathology report and unfortunately Andrew will now require more radical surgery which will include the removal of his left eye and all the tissue in his orbit. The pathology report indicated that Rhabdomyosarcoma cells where present right up to the edge of the tissue removed and therefore there must be some remaining. This type of cancer is highly malignant. Relapsing so soon after his initial protocol of 10 months of chemotherapy and 5 weeks of radiation and to still have cancer cells present after the last 6 months of more chemotherapy we now have to take more drastic measures to ensure that is doesn't spread. When I told Andrew last night my brave boy put his head down, a few small tears rolled down his cheeks and he went to bed. This will only delay his return to the net, I know we will see him on the ice again this season. Thank you to everyone who has visited Andrew's web site through the GTHL, your support has been overwhelming and timely. The minor hockey community has really embraced one of there own.

Sincerely, Len

Hi everyone, Andrew had his surgery today and we are thrilled to report that Dr. Hurwitz was able to remove his entire tumor and not damage his eye. Even Dr. Hurwitz was moved to tears when he gave us the good news. Andrew's first words in recovery were "did they take my eye"? We should have the pathology report in a few days and then the plan will be to continue with a few more rounds of chemotherapy. Andrew would then once again go on a 3 month follow up program. Andrew should be back between the pipes in two weeks if all goes well. The GTHL (Greater Toronto Hockey League) recently included a link on there website to Andrew's website and in the past 24 hours Andrew has had over 1000 visitors to his site with many words of support and encouragement. Please continue to pray for our "little" goalie.

Sincerely, Len

Happy Birthday Andrew, 11 years old today. How appropriate that your birthday should fall on Thanksgiving Day. I know only to well that this past year has given you many obstacles and challenges to overcome. The courage you have displayed has been an inspiration to us all. There is nothing more rewarding to dad than watching my "little" goalie play. You always prefer to play the games when you know you'll be getting a lot of shots. You welcome the challenge and your winning attitude has served you well on the ice and more importantly in battling cancer. You have accepted your relapse, treatments and potential surgeries with a wisdom and maturity beyond your years. On your birthday my only wish is that this next year will see you return to good health. Whatever the future holds continue to live your life to the fullest and know that you have been blessed with the support and prayers of many. God Bless you Andrew and Happy Happy Birthday!!!

Love Dad

Andrew's latest ct scan indicated that his tumor has decreased in size by 2mm and has possibly created a window of opportunity to remove only the tumor and spare his eye. The plan is to have two more rounds of chemotherapy over the next 6 weeks and then the surgery. The doctors feel that Andrew's tumor may now be contained in a capsulated form and therefore allow it to be removed and avoid the more radical surgery. Andrew's been feeling great he has gained 5 pounds and has had a growth spurt. Our "little" goalie is back between the pipes this week attending a goalie school as a guest of Johnny Bower's and has even asked if he can play organized basketball this fall. He continues to inspire us all...sincerely, Len.

Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at 07:14 PM (CDT)

Hi everyone, Andrew's latest CT scan indicated that his last sessions of chemotherapy didn't really give us the results we were hoping for. His tumor even though it hadn't grown it really wasn't any smaller. Dr. Malkin has scheduled Andrew for 5 days of chemotherapy this week as an out patient trying a combination of chemotherapy medicines which include Cyclphosphamide which he has had before with a new drug called Topotican. Andrew has had no nausea at all with this chemo, this afternoon he even played tennis and as I'm writing this journal entry I can see Andrew playing basketball with his brother Justin. Its wonderful to see him with so much energy. Our "little goalie" is looking forward to getting back on the ice in August and trying out his new pads. The HSC called to say that they have set up a meeting with his hero Curtis Joseph at the hospital tomorrow after his chemo. His next CT scan is scheduled for August 19th, we are all hoping and praying that this chemo will disolve his tumor and thus avoid the surgery which would include the removal of his left eye. Andrew has already accepted his potential surgery with a courage that is beyond his years. Whatever the future holds I know our Andrew will continue to live his life to the fullest and continue to be an inspiration to us all.

Sincerely, Len

Saturday, July 20, 2002 at 08:41 AM (CDT)

Well, the 1st Andrew Mizzoni Charity Golf Classic is over and we are thrilled to report it was a huge success. Over $22,000.00 was raised in support of cancer research at the Hospital for Sick Children. A special thanks to everyone who supported this most worthy of causes. Andrew has a CT scan this Monday and we should find out later this week if he will require surgery. Andrews excited about getting his new goalie pads this week.

Sincerely, Len

Monday, July 08, 2002 at 08:42 AM (CDT)

Andrew came home last Friday from his second round of chemotherapy. He is receiving Cisplatin and Dauxorubicin over a three day period. This chemotherapy is much stronger than he received last year and therefore the nausea
has been really tough to control. Dr. Makin feels that we will wait for three weeks to see the full results of Andrew's latest chemotherapy and then start planning his surgery for sometime in August. The Andrew Mizzoni Charity Golf Classic is sold out. We are thrilled with the support this most worthy of causes has once again received.

Sincerely, Len

Thursday, June 06, 2002 at 07:17 PM (CDT)

Andrew had his biopsy today and unfortunately his cancer has returned. He will be starting chemotherapy on Monday. If these medicines don't work he will require radical surgery. Doctor Malkin does not feel the cancer has spread, this will hopefully be confirmed late next week. The Hospital for Sick Children is going to be dedicating a plaque in honor of the Andrew Mizzoni Cancer Research Fund on the 25th of June, this should be a very emotional and rewarding day for all of us. The 1st Andrew Mizzoni Charity Golf Classic in support of cancer research at the HSC is just around the corner. It will be held on Thursday July 18th at Kleinburg Golf Club. Please support this most worthy of causes and most importantly please continue to pray for our "little" goalie.

Sincerely, Len

Thursday, May 30, 2002 at 07:29 AM (CDT)

Hi everyone, we just got the results of Andrew's latest CT scan and unfortunately he requires another biopsy. Dr Malkin did indicate that it is possilbe the area he is concerned with is do to the radiation treatment he received last summer. If cancer has returned the concern is how quickly it has after only 6 months of remission. An immediate biospy is scheduled and we should have the results by early next week. Please continue to pray for our Andrew.

Sincerely, Len

What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time Andrew had just been diagnosed with cancer. Twelve months later Andrew is in remission and we just got back from an amazing vacation in Disney World. We had a great time, full of wonderful memories I know we will always cherish. Thank you Children's Wish Foundation.

Dr. Malkin just called with the results of Andrew's latest CT scan. Good news, no sign of cancer!!! His next CT scan will be scheduled in 3 months time. Dr. Malkin also said that they would remove Andrew's subcutaneous port by this summer. We've booked our family Disney vacation for March 23rd until the 30th. We are all so excited. Thank you Children's Wish Foundation.
