Hi there,
My 3 year old son has been diagnosed with APML(APL) leukemia, I have not found another toddler or child with the same diagnosis. Is this your same diagnosis? You can see Austin's website & videos at

CREATE A PEPPER AT CHILI'S TO FIGHT CHILDHOOD CANCER!!!!

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Chili’s Grill & Bar® announced the kick-off of their fifth annual Create-A-Pepper to Fight Childhood Cancer campaign. Now through September 30, Chili’s restaurants around the country and, for the first time, in Puerto Rico, are marking National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by inviting people to get creative and raise funds to help St. Jude find cures and save children with cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases.
Guests at participating Chili’s restaurants can contribute to St. Jude in multiple ways:

- Make a donation to St. Jude and receive a Create-A-Pepper chili pepper coloring sheet designed for display at restaurants during the month.

- Purchase Create-A-Pepper T-shirts that can be customized with permanent marker.

- Buy a customized Create-A-Pepper key that can be cut for use at home or the office.

- Eat at Chili’s on Monday, Sept. 29, when Chili’s will donate 100 percent of profits from participating restaurant sales to St. Jude.

Visit www.createapepper.com and to make an online donation.

PASS IT AROUND!!!!

GET YOUR FRIENDS/FAMILY TOGETHER!!! TRUST ME ITS SUCH AN AMAZING CAUSE :)

I am praying you can either keep things down or they find a simple problem and fix it. Your problems are huge because they are yours. We can always tell ourselves that so many people go through so much worse but the fact is, your child, your problems, HUGE. There is no way around that. We want the best for our kids. WE should. So, my prayers are with you that Amanda can start feeling a LOT better and show a lot of significant improvements. God bless.

Hi Amanda,

Sorry you havent heard from me lately, I didnt have email access since the hurricane. But now I am up and running. Everyone says hello from the Bakery. I have your picture on the counter. Today I met one of my customers and she has a daughter who has your condition and when she was 9 had her transplant done several years ago and now she is a Mom herself and doing well. So her Mom send you regards and to continue to keep up the good work. You'll have better days ahead.
I got to see Sydney on Sunday and spend the day with Susan, Mary and Melissa. We did some sewing for the holidays.

Glad to hear all is well with your apartment, boy that was a scary event. Please give my regards to your parents and I will write more another day.

Dear Amanda,

I name is Rebecca. I am 35. I am walking 12 miles to save your life this winter. I would love to do 26 but 12 is goingto be fabulous. I am doing the marathon in Arazona in January 2006. I have collected most of my checks but need to get more on the ball. Iwas chubby as a child and have spent most of my life obsessed with my weight and an eating disorder and doing this marathon has been the best thing to get me focused on something normal and important. Please contact anytime.

Hi Amanda,

Glad to hear you are doing better, and you were able to get your halloween costume too! WoW!! Thats great news.
I saw Sydney the other day Mary and Melissa brought her to the bakery with Nicole. She is soo cute with her front teeth missing, just right for halloween. Nicole gave her a tour of the bakery and deli area and they picked a bunch of cookies for their treats. When you come home you can have a special tour too!!
Take care and keep up the good work! Hey Mom and Dad you are doing a wonderful job too!

Hi Amanda - you are MY hero. I can't even begin to imagine what you are going thru at such a young age. My mom had lymphoma many years ago and it was very difficult for her but she made it thru. I'm with Team in Training in West Palm. It's Saturday AM, 10/08 and I just got back from training. We start now at 6AM and you and your courage truly inspire me to get out of bed and train, even when I don't feel like it. Much love and prayers go out to you and your family. I hope to meet you real soon. God Bless You. Marcia

Hi Amanda! I am so sorry that you are having such a rough time. I pray you get relief soon. I am with Team and Training in South Florida. Our Team Runs are on Saturday and everyone asks about you, so we give them updates. We are running 1 hr and 45 min tomorrow and we tell the team that during the long run to spend some silent time thinking (I pray) about you and our other honored patients. Running long distance is the least we can do for the Leukemia Society and you. We hope the money we raise will eliminate this terrible disease someday. You are on our minds.

I just wanted to say that I'm so looking forward to meeting your little girl when she gets better and makes it back to Florida. I guess my really good friend's husband Mike Dunaway works with your husband at the fire department. Small world but anyway, I was wondering if you would mind if I gave out your website address about Amanda to all the people on my email address list. I'm really hoping it will encourage more donatations and prayer for you all. Also would like to put in a prayer request at our church (PBG Christ Fellowship) on her behalf too. Would that be okay??

Please give her a high five from me for being so strong and couragous. She is an inspiration to me.

Dear Laurie,
Sorry to hear about Amanda vomitting with taking the pill. Maybe you can check if the pill can be made into a liquid form. I did check when Emily HATED taking her pills(after she came home from the hospital.) The pharmacist was able to make one or two of them into a liquid form... the only problem was the "instability"(which means the drug doesn't stay active for as long as a pill would). We chose not to make them into liquid because the shelf life of the drug was only a couple of weeks. It wouldn't matter for Amanda, because the pharmacist sends her meds daily to her room. Hopefully the pharmacist can do this for her medicine. If you can't get an answer, let me know the name of the drug. I'll check with some of my family members who are pharmacists if this is even possible with this particular medicine. ( Just to make sure it wasn't a lazy pharmacist at Duke that just said "no" without really checking it out!)

Like the Solomons, I had no idea Amanda had relapsed...until last night when I was in the BOPP. I saw A J Schultheis on the door and was struck by the name. I thought for a minute and figured out it must be you guys. Then, I was going to stop by and say "hello" before I went home, but I didn't finish in the BOPP until midnight and you guys looked like you were sleeping so I didn't want to disturb you. Anyways, know that I am here if I can do anything for you during transplant. I'll be in the BOPP and in clinic a fair amount, so I will try to meet you in person on my next visit. I am SO sorry about the relapse. I am SO glad you're at the best place in the world for transplant (yes, I'm biased--but the Duke folks have been guided by the hand of God to help save my life and I'm forever grateful.) You're getting the best care there is anywhere. I will continue to pray for you. Blessings and love in Christ.

Hi Amanda and family! This is very unhappy news, but everything happens for a reason, and we know God has a good one! We are saying prayers and raising money to cure all of these cancers. We are signed up for the Dublin Marathon with Team in Training and are almost up to our goal this year of over $10,000 just between myself and my husband. My mom has cancer so this is also a very personal mission for us too! The next time you have a bit of rain fall on your home, look up to find the rainbow that the sun has created. This is my mom's special symbol for hope! Wishing for you lots of God's rainbows!!!

Our family has a list of people, mostly with leukemia, whom we continually pray for...either for healing or to stay in remission. We are heartbroken for Amanda and your family that her name will be moved into the healing category. If you want any literature on Arsenic, we can send you an envelope full overnight. Just email if you want it. (Last year when Emily still was not in remission when expected, we thought she'd need arsenic therapy. My brother is a pharmacist and supplied an abundance of information.) We will be faithfully praying for Amanda and your family.

Dear Amanda,
Were you able to see snow in Indiana? Even though we were at Disney World for Thanksgiving for Emily's Make a Wish trip, we came home to snow. The kids were in shorts in the morning at Florida, and snow pants at night in our back yard. That snow only lasted a day but it snow 2-3 inches last night and they played out today. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.

Hi i came across your caring bridge page through gemma. She signed my seven year old daughters caringbridge site.Gemma told me that she has A.P.L.Then when I went to her page to learn more about her I seen that you also had A.P.L.My daughter was diagnosed on June 26 2001.She also has A.P.L.She was 4 at the time of diagnoses.I just want to say that I hate to know that any child has or had cancer because I know what they have been through. When My daughter was first diagnosed it took the doc's three days to name the type she had. Then they said it is very rare. She is treated at St.Judes Hospiptal in Memphis,Tn.She has had a bone marrow transplant and a stem cell transplant and I'm happy to say she is in remmission.Just want you to know that you are not alone in fighting this paticular disease.Somtimes I felt like we were alone because She was the youngest at the hospital to fight this disease.God bless and Our prayers are with your family.

please feel free to visit Stormy's caringbridge page and say hi.

I did read the whole page and am so sorry you had to go through all of that. I know EXACTLY how frustrating that can be. Last time I had to get a port taken out (due to infection) they put in the IV (BEFORE putting me under = silly), put me under and then tried to put a central line in when they removed the port, decided that wasn't working, put an IV in my jugular (NEVER told us they would do this), sent me to recovery only to find that my IV didn't work so they had to put me BACK under and go through it all over again. You would think that after all that we have to go through they could make something like this easy. But, true to form, they don't and we suffer. I will be praying for Amanda to feel much better soon. I'm glad you got the port out and behind you. What a wonderful Christmas present. Blessings to you guys and I will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Can't wait to hear the rest of the story.
Surely it can't get worse???
Glad Gemma had an external port, she didn't even have to go to OR, the doc. just very gently pulled it out while she was getting a routine check-up.
It all took about 5 mins.

I am with you sister on the financial part, its not important to us anymore compared to still having our kids here, but I know you stress about it too. Its a shame here in America we have to be worried about that. Those of us in the middle income section never get a break.
Glad to hear all is well there!

De-Ported for Xmas, now that's the best present anybody could ask for.
Halloween sounded fun.
Everything is okay here. Gemma had a hospital visit yeterday. She's on her LAST 2 weeks of ATRA. Can you believe it??? Okay she still has another 3 months of other pills but at least she's starting to finish. We can't wait.

Nothing like a bit of fever to keep you on your toes. I wouldn't think her line will have infection if the same bug seems to be going round the family.
At least we don't have that worry (we have another 100) as Gemma got her port taken out before starting maintenance.

At last an update, I've been checking in almost daily.
Couldn't believe my eyes!!!!!!
Everything certainly looks good, although you must be a bit tired.
How are you coping with Amanda being off treatment? Is it as scary as you imagined.
Gemma still has until Feb.I know it must be a bit of a worry, but I'll be glad to stop all those pills. Every time she takes them I wonder what they're doing to her (apart from saving her life, I mean).
Say hello to all at that end.
And remember it's better to be kept busy, your mind can't wander onto "other things", at least not too often anyway.

Hey Amanda Jo, how are you doing? Back to school already huh? hey did I ever tell you we found some bunnies in our backyard recently. Actually, our dog did - the kids were in the pool and she was barking like crazy under the pool deck. Finally when we checked there was a bunny nest with a baby bunny in it. Then after more looking through it we found 2 more. So since I have 3 kids and there was 3 bunnies, they each named one. We left lettuce and water and carrots out there but it was never touched so we dont think the mom came back. About 2 days later we took them in to feed them and we had them a week, feeding them kitten milk from a kitten bottle or dropper. They were SO cute! They called them Jean, Robin and Nibbles. My son Gooch called his Jean, named after Jean Smart in XMen. They opened their eyes while we had them and by the end of the week we had them they were running all over, more running than hopping. My husband was convinced they were going to grow up and bite our fingers off, so we turned them over to a Childrens Museum that is a wildlife rehab center near us. I hope they are being taken care of, if they werent already released. I know the kids loved them and they really were cute!! That was our thrill for the summer – the kids dont go back to school here until Aug 27th so they have a little more time off yet

Well good grief; if it's not one thing...I will be praying for healing for your ENTIRE family as the "illness monster" AKA "the devil" seems to want to wreak havoc with you once again. Although I know it is not as serious as cancer, God's desire for us is to be HEALTHY and have a FULL life. It's kinda hard to do that when the devil is constantly attacking your family with health issues. I will continue to lift you up in pray and check on you here as I have been. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers even though I don't sign in that often. Blessings to you.

Thanks again for the info on Camp Sunshine. I am starting to get nervous. I told Scott what you said about the sheets and towels and he said "are you sure?". He wants to know if we should call ahead and tell them what don't have the room to bring everything with us?

But, unfortunately I can't do that from NC :( What I can do is pray, and pray I will--that God will provide a solution that is best for everyone involved. He's good at that! I'm sorry you're having a hard time. It doesn't end does it? Thankfully, neither does God's love, His blessings and His provision. I KNOW He will provide--He loves you. So do I. Hi Amanda! How lucky for you to be going to Maine to play in the snow. I'm originally from Massachusetts and miss the snow - sledding and ice skating outside are the best. Dress in layers and eat an icicle for me! And don't forget to make snow angels!

Hi, I'm a friend of the Bunkelmann's. I have a pair of gray ski pants size 7 and a light blue and gray ski jacket - they're both for my son, but can be worn by a girl - just in case you come up short. I saw on the news this morning that Bangore Maine was minus 6 degrees - yikes!! Hope Amanda has a great time!!
P.S. I got the pants at The Gap a couple of years ago for just a couple of dollars. You may want to call or gon online to check their sales!!

I have everything Amanda could possibly need from Lyssa's closet except boots. I need to know what size boots both girls wear. Also, I will just plan on mailing a box down rather than send with Mom & Dad; they are hoping to have only carry ons, and this pile is already so-o-o big! We are going shopping tomorrow and will get Sydney taken care of....please let me know about the boots ASAP.

Why don't you just plan on Mom and Dad getting a few outfits at the Goodwill and bringing them down with them on the 26th? That would seem to be the simplest thing, and we love to go to Goodwill and "root" around. You would only need a few outfits, and some snowgear. I will see if I have any of Lyssa's old stuff, but she's in sz10 and I usually get rid of the smaller clothes right away. Call us and let us know.

Just read your story with great interest. Guess what my 15 year old daughter Gemma was diagnosed with AML M3 (Yes, same as you) on 7th February 2002 and went into remission 1 month later. She is now on maintenance with ATRA and two other chemo drugs. She takes ATRA for 2 weeks every 3 months and guess what after about 10 days she gets terrible headaches and guess what she has had problems with her eyes(she was totaly blind for about a week).
Gemma is doing well, back at school and full of energy.
Tell mum to e-mail me, it would be good to compare notes. Hope you're feeling well.

I am thinking about you guys and praying for you. Hopefully you will never need a transplant. I've managed to avoid transplant thus far too. But, I always know that it's a possibility sometime in the future. And, the great folks at Duke who have been treating me for 15 out of a 22 year diagnosis will be right there carrying everything out just as they are now with my treatments. I try to be thankful that at least BMT is an option if I ever need it. Not one you EVER want to have to use but one that is there nonetheless. When I was first diagnosed I could not say that. So praise God for getting me this far and praise God for getting YOU this far and praise God that He will be faithful through everything we both face as we trust Him. Blessings to you and Happy Thanksgiving to your family. I will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers and to check back to see how you are.

Morning Amanda!

Just checking in to see how you are doing. My poor poor kitty is sick. He has a hairball. :( He's on medicine. He hates the medicine so I have to hold him down and make him take it. It's this thick stuff that is supposed to taste good to cats. *snort* Yeah, ask him about it. He'll tell ya. He has been "telling" me about it for a while. He follows me around "meowing" at me like he's telling me off. The vet said tha the is too skinny so she put him on Nutra Cal. That's a suppliment that is supposed to be full of calories and vitamins and such. He hates that too! So now we have to hold him down for that also. Man he is gonna be mad at me for a while. I'll have to send you a picture of him soon.

Hope everything is going great with you!

Hugs

Amanda,

Howdy hon. Listen sweetie....you are gonna be fine. The pressure in your eyes will sometimes be making it seem like you are not seeing well. It's ok. The doctors will find out how to treat it. I have a problem with my eyes too. I have what is called Optical Drussen. That means that I have "floaters" that get caught in my optic nerve and i have places that are blind spots. So I know exactly how you are feeling. But you have to remember that there are all kinds of ways to help you. And the doctors will find a way. I'm sure of it. Keep your happy face on and don't worry.. mom and dad are gonna make those doctors help you. You are a very brave gal!!!! Take care sweetie.

Ed is right. The web can be a great source of hope when you read about kids doing well but when you read about the kids who arent doing well, God, it takes a LONG time to getover that. That depression lasts a WHOLE lot longer than the relief when you see kids doing well. Its hard, and no two kids are alike or react the same anyway. We just have to pray there are no more familes going thru what Matt's are right now.

Hi Amanda!

Hope everything is going well and you can get those headaches taken care of. I get migraines and I know that headaches are not fun. What did you name the guinea pig? I had one that when I was young and named her Penelope Piglet. She was a mean ole bat. She had two babies and they were the sweetest things but she was horrible. She bit me and I smacked her with a baby brush. And she tried to bite me again! Needless to say my mom gave her away! But her babies were adorable and not mean at all.

Take care and I'll check back to see how you are doing.

Gee, thats weird, where we go they NEVER do the finger sticks- they always just access the port, and they kids get "put under" for spinals. Another area hospital does not put the kids under, it uses versed for spinals, and routinely does finger stick blood tests.... different all over I guess.
I am glad she is doing well...and she will continue to - there's NO reason to believe otherwise!

Hi Guys
Amanda is one beautiful little girl no matter what!
And you're right, she may be son young she doesnt care too much about the hair loss,
but other kids unfortunately are sometimes quick to point it out.
I showed Ron my hairbrush with hair in it & explained that everyone loses hair here & there,
he was just losing a lot more at one time, but it would grow back.
I hope she realizes how many people care about her!!!
and you guys too!

Hi to all of you;
I have just got in on this site, I think it is great. I am glad Amanda is doing well. It sounds as if people are really helping your family out alot.
I thought the photos were nice, in fact I copied them so I can take them to work with me.
I hope that your family can make it to the reunion this summer. It would be good to see Amanda. Of course, it would be good to see the rest of the family also.
Hope the dinner was good.

Hello! I had some trouble getting into this site--something wasn't right with the address I was using! I finally called Diane and got it figured--I was anxious to get in!

Amanda looks great in the picture--can't wait to see you all again! How exciting she met the stars from the movie--that's way cool! Amanda I was so glad to hear you have been back to school! I bet you liked seeing all your friends! We send so much love and continue in prayer!

I JUST FOUND YOUR WEB SITE ON THE LEUKPAGES WEBSITE. I AM TOUCHED SO BY YOUR SAGA. MY GRANDSON WAS BORN IN ST. MARY'S HOSPITAL LAST APRIL 29. HE WILL CELEBRATE HIS FIRST BIRTHDAY IN A FEW WEEKS. MY SON AND HIS WIFE WERE LIVING IN JUPITER FLORIDA WHEN JAXON WAS BORN. MY SON PLAYED BASEBALL LAST SUMMER FOR THE JUPITER HAMMERHEADS. THAT AREA OF THE WORLD IS A PARADISE AND WE ENJOYED OUR VISITS THERE, WELL. ON SEPTEMBER 1.2001 THEY WERE IN DAYTONA BEACH FOR THE LAST SERIES OF BASEBALL GAMES FOR THE SEASON. JAXON WAS SICK TO HIS STOMACH AND WAS RUNNING A TEMP SO HIS MOM, KRISTEN, TOOK HIM TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM. THEY DID BLOOD WORK AND IMMEDIATELY TOLD THEM HE HAS A MALIGNANCY IN HIS BLOOD. THEY TRANSFERED HIM TO ORLANDO DURING THE NIGHT AND HE WAS DIAGNOSISED WITH AML (M5) THE NEXT DAY. THAT WAS ON SUNDAY. BY WEDNESDAY THEY HAD AIRLIFTED HIM AND HIS PARENTS TO ARKANSAS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL IN LITTLE ROCK, JUST 20 MINUTES FROM OUR HOME TOWN. HE HAS ENDURED MONTHS OF CHEMOTHERAPHY AND ON FEBRUARY 1, 2002 HAD AN UNRELATED STEM CELL TRANSPLANT IN SAN ANTONIO. HE IS THRIVING AND GROWING AND BLESSING US EACH DAY WITH HIS STRENGTH AND LOVE. YOU CAN READ ABOUT JAXON'S JOURNEY AT www.caringbridge.com/ar/jaxon. I WAS TOUCHED BY YOUR WEB PAGE, I GUESS BECAUSE OF HAVING VISITED YOUR AREA AND KNOWING A LITTLE ABOUT THE PLACES YOU TELL ABOUT. GOD IS SO GREAT AND HE IS GOOD ALL THE TIME EVEN IN THE MIDST OF HORRIBLE CIRCUMSTANCES AND THE WORST NIGHTMARES WE CAN IMAGINE. GOD'S GRACE WILL SUSTAIN YOU AND GIVE YOU THE STRENGTH TO DO ALL YOU HAVE TO DO.

Hi guys,
I am SO happy that her sister is a perfect match!
Of course, I wish you werent thrown in this path either though.
As I said in the L&L Society boards, my son has ALL, but I can direct you to some online friends of kids with AML if you 'd like..?,
or you can try the ACOR page I mentioned.
Will be praying for you guys, I know how hard this is to deal with emotionally.
